TGWTG "Nostalgia Critic" / Doug Walker, Rob Walker, Mike Michaud, Mike Ellis, Holly Christine Brown, et al - The Incompetent Predator-Protecting Upper Management of Channel Awesome, Doug Still Not That Funny

This Mike Michaud guy just seems like the biggest asshole. Like... how has this group survived this long under his management?

And don't answer because :autism: that's being lazy.

Well it's classic narcissism, imagine a manlet film director, complete with a fake tan and scribbled on mustache who chimps out horrendously after the third cut. Mike Michaud is that kind of jerk.

Because NC and CA somewhat as a whole still manages to reel in something of a profit. For years they lived off the work of others, and managed to reel in a fan-base that refused to listen to others pleas that horrible shit was going on behind the scenes.

If this latest drama is a sign of anything, it's that the years of bad decision making are coming back to haunt them finally.

For completion's sake, Malcolm Ray (one of the sketch actors working for Doug) also made a statement.

tl;dr: He wasn't involved in anything since it all was before he joined the site and thinks things got a lot better since then. Pretty safe but that's expected from someone who hopes to continue working for CA. The most notable thing about this is that one of the few people who wasn't part of any of this drama is the furry.

I'd be interesting to see Tamara give her own input as well, even if she's mostly on the same boat as Malcolm. Even though Doug is also pulling the puppet strings on her, she has been able to make herself a bigger name and face for CA (relatively speaking, compared to Doug's other minion) due to having her own series, and she's arguably a content producer for the site herself as well.

So in the end Mike Michaud, someone I never really knew much about despite loving the show so much, was the ultimate sperg in all of this.

What a master manipulator, and I promise you my Lord has a special place in hell for him.

Wonder what the fucker thought when the awesome Jew Wario killed himself.

I think it's a mix of dumb luck and sheer novelty; there wasn't anything like Channel Awesome out there, and to a certain extent, still isn't. CA meant a lot more back in 2009 when it was easier to find success outside of YouTube if you still wanted to make videos. You got people like the Nostalgia Critic, Cinema Snob, and Spoony, all of whom were relatively popular on YouTube prior to joining CA. I can sort of understand the mindset the producers who stayed despite the mistreatment had, because CA was more of an entity back then and I don't blame them for wanting to be part of it.

It really doesn't mean as much now given the site has to use YouTube to post videos anyway. Plus now that all those producers have left, they don't hold any more loyalty to the site, and that's not getting into the diminishing success of the site.

'How often have you heard of the death of a former colleague and thought, "How can this benefit me?"'

This is embarrassing, but back when they first started I was in middle school, and I had wanted to be a part of the site. I never seriously pursued it or anything, it never went beyond "wouldn't it be cool if I made videos on there?" I was a big fan of Doug, before I got older and realized what a sperg he is.

In hindsight, it's probably a good thing I never joined, for a number of reasons.

Funny that that was me too in middle school. It's embarrassing to say, but the Nostalgia Critic was what got me really into movies in the first place. I stopped watching as I got older and as the content became cringier and cringier but it's weird to think about how at one point I straight up idolized that guy. Well, I'm at least glad that I can look back at it now and have a good chuckle.

In regards to Michaud, he went straight from menial retail work to founding Channel Awesome. The comparative boost in clout probably poisoned the ego of someone who must have already had sociopathic tendencies, and success allowed them to run wild.

Here we go mate.

I love the fucking dislikes and comments that were recently given out (and will most likely continue given Channel Autism's current situation).

Here are a few other videos Michaud appears in:

(11:38 mark)

(6:30 mark)

Unfortunately, there was nothing I could find of him getting punched in the face. Sorry, guys.

This. I also think another reason why ChannelAwesome became so popular, has to do with the "nerd mentality" around 2008.
Lets face it: 10-12 years ago, with youtube emerging, suddenly there was a plattform for nerds to exchange information not just by post, but also video. And I am not just talking like comic, or videogame nerds, but just in general fans of anything. I think one reason why many of these reviewers managed to get some sort of popularity out of it was, because for the audience they were some sort of surrogate. You know: Someone you can listen and who assumingly shares similar interests than you and can tell you something about a certain movie you heard of and make fun of it.
I think this "surrogate friend" mentality is what made some of these reviewers popular with the audience. And then when channelaweosme came along and made their crossover shit, they also conveyed like this image of comradery between reviewers, which people may have hoped they can also find when doing the same shit as them, leading to some degree to the reviewer boom (incombination with others thinking, internet reviewing makes a lot of money) but now the sad truth is out: This "community" is sterile, everyone was pretty much forced to do what Doug and Michaud wanted, the "heroes" of some of these fans are pretty shit when you dig deep enough and there are too many reviewers as that something interesting really comes out.

The reviewer bubble is finally bursting and ChannelAwesome is just the beginning.

You have to remember CA was originally set up as a refuge of sorts when copyright lawyers were practically chasing those producers off of YouTube.

You mean the public is growing weary of “cultural critics” that actually produce nothing of value and spend their lives sperging on others works?

/looks around here... hmmm?

The public is growing weary of professional cultural critics...

My assumption:

1) Outright naivety. Most of the creators weren't in their late 20s or 30s, or at least been around the block, whether it be careers or life in general. Hell, how many of these creators started making movies in their parent's house/ college dorm? They had no idea what they were getting into.

2) The majority of content creators come off as very non-confrontational, and at the very most might write some passive aggressive tweets, but that's about it. None of them wanted to rock the boat, especially since back in the day...

3) The Channel Awesome Clique/ Cult of Personality ruled in the day. Nearly no one, sans LordKat, wanted to talk shit about Channel Awesome because it'd be them vs. all of the other content creators AND their fantards. It hasn't been until now where there were enough cracks in the Channel Awesome veneer before people decided to speak up en masse.

In one of the threads discussing Doug, somebody suggested that the reason some of his reviews have a 'premiere' in a local movie theater was so he could feel he 'made it' as a filmmaker ('The Next Spielberg'). I get the same vibe from his thumbnails on the actor/performer side.

It's bad enough when Doug inserts himself into a movie poster as if he's suppose to be there: (snip)

In his defense, that's something RiffTrax does as well. Except, y'know, Mike Nelson and Co. actually add something original to the movies they riff (i.e., humor).

And yes, he has done a RiffTrax.
