TGWTG "Nostalgia Critic" / Doug Walker, Rob Walker, Mike Michaud, Mike Ellis, Holly Christine Brown, et al - The Incompetent Predator-Protecting Upper Management of Channel Awesome, Doug Still Not That Funny

If I was an idle rich person I would offer Doug a bounty of $10,000 to make a 30 minute video of pure original content. No references to pop culture, no watered down ripoff of an existing movie, it has to be a story that he came up with that isn't "influenced" by something else. And I would sincerely want him to produce it so we can see how he stacks up to the likes of Tommy Wiseau or Harold Warren.

He wouldn't be able to do it. He's incapable of understanding the production of content when it's not in relation to something else. You could bump it up to $100,000 for only ten minutes and he still would likely have trouble pulling it off.

I hate to call people "parasites" in any form, but it really fits with him. He relies solely on the work of other people to make his content.

I bet their tenth anniversary would have been cringy as fuck with clips of Hyper Fangirl in them.

In all honesty, hearing there was a tenth anniversary thing planned, I would love to know what sort of trainwrack that would have been.
I mean, even if channelawesome would not fall apart like someone with leprosy, can you imagine a special that features Tony Goldmark, the Lovecraft guy, the Dom, Angry jose, the Blockbuster Buster, Doug and all his creations in leading roles?
Sure, the old specials were shit and all the former contributors have their own dirt here and there. But they had still more charisma as a group than any of what was a member of channelawesome since 2015. And I say that as someone who likes Tenold, the Dom and a few others of these few remaining people.

Probably the saddest part about all of this is, instead of these anniversary flicks being basically just shitposts, just a bunch of buds hanging out and having some fun like I thought years ago, Doug & co thought they are making comedy cold and legit art. :story:

What is it with these internet reviewers and their fucking movies being serious business? YOU REVIEW SHIT ON THE INTERNET, YOU'RE NOT THE NEXT KUBRICK. God-damn.

On one hand, if they didn't have any higher ambitions it'd be foolish. You can't do this shit for the rest of your career.

On the other hand, there were few signs most of them were meant for anything more than their little corner of their internet.

TGWTG's heyday came and went so fast that I wonder if it just wasn't mean to be. Ad revenue was the only thing that gave it a purpose and the cracks in that business plan showed within two years.

Linkara was one of their "Big 5" talents on the site (NC, Cinema Snob, Linkara, Angry Joe, and Spoony).

Spoony crashing and burning was a fluke for them and they adapted to survive with just the "Core 4"

But now Linkara bails. And over the last year or so, Joe has moved most of his stuff to Youtube and looks ready to jump ship soon.

I wonder how long they can last with potentially just Brad and Doug... No one gives a shit about anyone else on the site right now.

Also, a bit of background for the "Why the fuck did Doug give Mike so much control!?" questions:

It's because Doug didn't plan ahead, panicked, and made a shitty snap-decision.

While working his normal job, Doug made his first Nolstalgia Critic reviews on Youtube. He got a lot of views, a ton of positive feedback, and more money via Youtube Bucks than he made at his actual job.

So, without doing any planning or research, he quit his job in that infamously autistic video that made him pretty much unemployable. And decided to do Nolstalgia Critic on Youtube as a full time job.

Then the copyright claims hit, taking down most of Doug's videos. He was in trouble. He just burned bridges at his job and now, with bills piling up, he couldn't make money on his videos.

Enter his "Friend" Mike, who saw an opportunity. Mike used money he had (Savings or loans from family, possibly) to rent a server, set up a website/host, and hire a lawyer to draw up a huge, complicated contract to employ Doug, with all the benefits to him (IP ownership, noncompete clauses, majority shareholder status) buried deep within.

He approached Doug with the angle of "You've got talent and I have some resources. Sign up and I'll manage you and host your videos, safe from Youtube Copyright. And you just keep doing what you do!" Doug was desperate and signed without reading.

The rest is history.

AmazingAtheist content was problematic.

It's really hilarious of how Doug had a beef with Tommy Wiseau back in the day, cause he's the closest thing to Wiseau in terms of managing and movie directing.

CoolCat and Wiseau are better moviemakers by virtue of the fact that they haven't really screwed too many people by comparison.

I think the problem is they had ambition but got so lost in the haze of their own farts and steamy sweat of fan adoration they completely lost perspective over time.

I mean, look at AVGN, right? There's a reason he doesn't have a dedicated cow thread (as far as I'm aware, at least) but these dudes do. He knew what he could do and what he couldn't, he had ambition but knew his bounds. He made his movie - was it shit? In my opinion, yes. But no drama came out of it, he didn't pretend it was some fucking masterpiece and the guy just kept doing his thing, no problem.

Maybe the point of failure is just congregating a bunch of fragile, egotistical and often mentally unstable individuals in the same place over a long period of time. What else could it do but crash and burn?

I'm watching it right now, and my god is this creepy. I never realized how much TJ cared about Doug Walker and wanted to form a working relationship with him.

Also, I find it hilarious the line that TJ says toward the end of the video, where he says these people didn't get where they are by imitating others.
