That's a perfect way of not alienating people who should be taking a message.

Sure! If your intention of representing these diverse characters rely on stereotypes! Part of the reason most writing advice includes "write what you know" because there's a good chance that writing what you don't understand might actually insult a hell of a lot of people. See: all of Dobson's strawmen, the disconnect between games journalists, their audience and the games they play or why the politics and strategy in the WarCraft series is actually really fucking dumb (a millennia old strategist who sees humans and orcs attack demons with higher priority than her Night Elves who attacked them too? Clearly a greater enemy! Malfurion being told by a psycho that his beloved died to give them a chance to get at the psycho's target? Clearly, the psycho is the most honest person in the room! Giving a dishonest jackass of a warchief a chance to do an honor duel? Whoops, turns out their weapon is poisoned whoda thunk). Hell, one of Lily's "idols" and sources of plagarism, Yahtzee did a decent enough job showcasing anxiety because he himself has it, letting that experience sink into the anxious character Trillby's behaviors in the Chzo Mythos. Obviously, you can't just write about one subject or topic, but that's what further research is for.
Thing is, writers have to do a hell of a lot of research and fact checking to ensure they're not pulling shit out of their ass or being insulting with their work (not that some vultures give a shit about what their research may find). Without research into the subcultures and cultures that make up who you're representing, you can come off as creating characters who are all racially, sexually and LGBT diverse... but all sound like straight, cis white men in spite of it all. Or you create stereotypes.
So Lily talks out of her ass about writing, and it's clear that she has NEVER written anything further than Stockholm where most of the characters were already established.
