I could never wrap my head around Bob's obsession with colonizing space unless he somehow bought into cheesy sci-fi plots about interstellar explorers in the 2020s and now feels "cheated" because that wasn't reality. Like humanity might eventually reach that stage but I wouldn't bank on seeing it in our lifetime especially if you're middle-aged, diabetic, and obese. It's not actually just wheat for Bob. We all say moon wheat because it was brought up the first time we found out about Bob's lunar aspirations.
That would also explain his thing of insisting we establish a global government beyond him having fascist beliefs. It's a (pretty bad) cliche in sci-fi for writers to write entire planets as if they're singular cities instead of....planets. Sometimes they literally are one giant city which might've inspired the manhattanized New York of Bob's dreams. It's really doubtful that any planet where life can thrive would be homogeneous on a planetary scale instead of having a complex web of different cultures and societies.
