I could never wrap my head around Bob's obsession with colonizing space unless he somehow bought into cheesy sci-fi plots about interstellar explorers in the 2020s and now feels "cheated" because that wasn't reality. Like humanity might eventually reach that stage but I wouldn't bank on seeing it in our lifetime especially if you're middle-aged, diabetic, and obese.

That would also explain his thing of insisting we establish a global government beyond him having fascist beliefs. It's a (pretty bad) cliche in sci-fi for writers to write entire planets as if they're singular cities instead of....planets. Sometimes they literally are one giant city which might've inspired the manhattanized New York of Bob's dreams. It's really doubtful that any planet where life can thrive would be homogeneous on a planetary scale instead of having a complex web of different cultures and societies.

This is about the most disingenuous cartoon the New Yorker has ever posted. A truer depiction of events would be to show the pilots swerving the plane this way and that, in an attempt to keep the passengers sick and disoriented. Then a passenger raises his hand and asks if there are any pilots on board, and one of the other passengers (representing Trump) says "I have a Pilot License. I've never flown a full size plane before but I've flown similar things and have some related training." Then the passengers elect him pilot and put him in the cockpit because, hey, he HAS to be better than the guys who are mishandling the plane at that moment. In other words, the cartoon presupposes that the guys in charge of the country/plane were doing a good job at serving their constituents/flying, when actual events show a large chunk of the population/passengers weren't happy with their performance.

The whole thing has a "How DARE you peasants disagree with your betters! Sit down and let US continue to handle things! " vibe to it.
