The Elder Scrolls

That's a fucking nightmare.

Ahh.. The Elder Scrolls. The fine wine of Western RPGs. Quite possibly my favourite game series. I have played most of them (haven't played the Ngace games nor Redguard) and enjoyed them quite a lot. I'm only going to talk about the big three, because they're the ones I actually bought and played when they came out.

Morrowind I played the everloving shit out. They traded the large open world of Daggerfall to a smaller but more immersive island of Vvardenfell. I really enjoyed the aesthetic too; character models, armor sets, weapons, clothing, buildings.
The game also had my second favourite expansion pack ever; Bloodmoon. I did like Tribunal to an extent, even though it's clearly inferior to Bloodmoon. Everything in Bloodmoon just feels right. The questlines are very interesting and Solstheim at night is beautiful, even if the graphics are a bit dated. It also had uncle Sweetshare so suck it Almalexia.
Also Morrowind had artifacts that no other TES game has really gotten right. In Morrowind artifact weapons/armor were superior to anything else, unlike in Oblivion where they are maybe marginally better than normal stuff or in Skyrim where artifacts are generally worse than anything else, because you can't reinforce them through smithing. Morrowind had Chrysamere so there's really no competition for it's place as my favourite TES.

I have a lot of fond memories of Oblivion. I didn't mind the generic fantasy setting. No matter where I went in the game, I just couldn't stop admiring how the game looked. I liked that they had gone into a more action filled combat style and to me the stats were streamlined just enough.
Oblivion also had some of the best guild quests in the TES games, you really felt you were climbing up the ladder. My personal favourite would be the Fighter's Guild storyline, with Dark Brotherhood coming a close second. The Daedra quests were nothing to sneer at either.
Probably the best times I had with the game was when I played it "co-op" with a couple of friends. We would go to my friends place with our PCs and have eachothers characters modded into our games as companions and just have a good time roleplaying.
Oblivion also has my favourite expansion ever; The Shivering Isles. That expansion is just amazing. I have a USB-stick that has a 7-year old save with everything done except that expansion, just so I can play it. I mean can you top going to the realm of the madgod, helping him and becoming the madgod yourself in the end. That's not even taking into account the fun sidequests and the fact that you can just lose yourself exploring the island.
All in all Oblivion is my second favourite TES.

Skyrim.. Well Skyrim came out at an unfortunate time. I got it on the day it came out, but only played it for less than a week because.. Well.. Witcher 2, need I say more?
My Skyrim has clocked less than 60 hours played, because after I played W2, I just couldn't get into it (bear in mind, I'm a pretty massive fan of the Witcher books).
I did play Skyrim enough to do the main, civil war, guild and some miscellaneous quests. It just left me with this "that's it feeling". I can understand why people like it, but for me Skyrim was a massive letdown. No stats, no hand to hand, dumbed down progression and the worst offender; NO EQUIPABLE PANTS! There went my trend of playing a traveling pugilist with only black pants and leather boots.
I'm also confused on how Skyrim is balanced. Is it balanced around the idea that you smith weapons with 700+ damage and play on the highest difficulty or that you don't smith anything and play on normal difficulty?

So there's my wall of text. I've been meaning to get the Skyrim DLCs, after hearing some good things about Dragonborn and I'm sure there are mods for my hand to hand/pants problem.

I did make a monkish character in Skyrim. Unarmed attacks are governed by heavy armor (the gloves' armor value becomes damage I think) with a perk and there is a pair of gloves that gives an enchantment to unarmed attacked in the sewers of Riften so you can de-enchant that and re-enchant other stuff with that property. I remember I had to put a level cap on my character because I knew if I continued to level my damage output wouldn't be enough though. But watching my Elderly Nord smash bandits faces and throw them around was totally worth the hassle. I imagine if you play it on the pc there are mods that would make it easier.

Vanilla there's some clothes that are just a pair of trousers

Holy cow, I just realized how horrible the characters feet look.

Yeah, I played around with a character like that too. But the fact that I had to invest into the heavy armor tree and the fact that I had to wear armor was annoying as all hell. So I just gave up and started using my second favourite weapons (Sword & Shield).
I still wish Skyrim would let me go barechested with a wide variety of pants like in Oblivion. Nothing beats a combo of black wide pants, leather boots and wrist irons.

It is interesting to see the evolution of these races. Especially how Orcs for the longest time were exclusively an enemy race like Goblins (and were supposed to be in Morrowind as well until fairly late into development). As well as the addition of Imperials to Morrowind.

Regarding the Imperials, they did appear in the spin-off game Redguard. Like the Orcs in Daggerfall and Arena, they were your enemies.

Redguard didn't happen. It just didn't.

I've learned with Bethesda RPGs I can usually handle only one of them per year. I originally tried to play Oblivion back in 2009, right after a loooong long binge in Fallout 3, and immediately felt burnt out. Tried again after playing Skyrim, but immediately realized some aspects I've grown accustomed to in Skyrim weren't in Oblivion and I couldn't immediately start running around, dual wielding axes.

This last couple of months however, I FINALLY have gotten into the right mindset of playing Oblivion and I'm really loving it. No mods, just the original vanilla game. Already cleared the Dark Brotherhood missions and the Arena missions, presently working on the Thieves Guild and wondering how in the fuck am I going to do the Mages quests (My character is a Redguard that excels in stealth and athletics, but has next of no personality and even less intelligence.). I think I'm gonna have to go steal some Mortar and Pestle and whatver and start grinding up whatever plants I can find together to help expand my mind.

And then go kill a whole family because a statue of Mephala told me to fucking do so.

Don't do the Skooma, kids.

I can't wait to try Daggerfall in earnest. I touched it a bit when I was just trying out games (I bought the anthology) and it looks like it plays like a lesser Morrowind (in the best possible way.)

Daggerfall is my favorite. With that being said, good luck getting through it without some game breaking bug showing up after you've played it for hours. When I was a kid I thought I was just doing it wrong. Turns out that important quest items will disappear from the game world, sometimes directly out of your inventory. It has been a few years since I've looked into it, does anyone know if any of the modders have gotten around this?

I know there is a save editor for Daggerfall but I don't think it'll work on modern computers unless you use DosBox.

The top one is the one I'd recommend. That is if you know how to use dosbox.
