Child marriage laws in the US vary from state to state, and many states allow children to marry with parental and judicial approval. Both Mississippi and Massachusetts allow this, having no statutory minimum age, along with 19 other states, though this number is decreasing.

It's worth noting, though, that all US states have a minimum age of at least 16 for sexual activity.

That ignorant comment about COBOL is the best part of the tweet. In 2018 COBOL is still being taught at more than 300 universities around the world, most of them -- like, say, Texas A&M and the University of Maryland -- better engineering schools than Ole Miss.

Best I could find was that he attended high school in Hattiesburg in the far southeastern portion of the state. Median income (~31k) and poverty (~37%) are worse than national averages but not out of the ordinary for Mississippi, and look even better when you consider rock bottom cost of living and 31% rate of holding a Bachelor's or higher.

Also, John's father is an ob/gyn and his mother is a realtor-I'm willing to bet they lived in the wealthy part of town either way.
