Steven Universe - Now a Griefing Thread

I'm kind of hoping the endgame is Steven dying, resulting in "Rose Quartz" reforming and all of the Crystal Gems being disappointed because they preferred Steven.

I was more surprised that they even went with that route.

I mean it explores a deconstruction of Garnet and her relationship with the Crystal Gems, since her entire existance hung on to the ideals of Rose Quartz. Seeing that its all a lie, and the subsequent defusion says a lot about how deeply it impacted her

While its alright opportunity for character exploration and it raises questions for a Jasper redemption arc, I did find the reveal...dissapointing? It all circles nicely with Pearl's backstory and all, and it makes sense, but its so predictable.

I watched every episode. Twice. I like Steven Universe, but I don't love it.

The color palette of the show is really well designed, and the backgrounds from Steven Sugar blend really nicely with the aesthetic of the show. The way the creators pay attention to lighting is also something I love.

The concept of fusion is a veiled commentary and reflection on modern relationships, which is either a progressive concept to push for in childrens animation or SJW drivel that makes the show unwatchable--depending on who you're asking. Personally, its the coolest thing on the show, and a lot of thought goes into the conception of every fusion.

On top of that, the music is top notch and Rebecca Sugar raised the standard of music in cartoons. The voice actors (even Garnet) are all well cast. (I guess people can argue Sadie's singing isnt suited for the whole ghost motif theyre giving her band, but her voice actor is still an actual singer). I still listen to a lot of the songs on a playlist.

It falls flat in the action scenes though. These huge momentous battles that were hyped for months just dont pan out in the scale they should, and it homages to anime in a way the budget cant handle. I only mention it at all because Ian Jones Quarty, Sugar's boyfriend, made well done action sequences in his show OK KO, and he still works on the series. Alexandrite vs Malachite was a massive dissapointment.

The show does a great job fleshing out characters, but it also drops the ball holding certain storylines together. The cluster storyline was a mess that got lumped in together with the Malachite saga, we never really seen attempts to decorrupt the broken gems despite hints of it being possible, and Captain Lars is such a cool idea, but its relegated to outside development. Theres also nitpicks I can talk about for hours.

For how the episodes are scheduled to come out, Steven Universe cant fully match the expectations built up by fans, and thats its greatest weakness. You can say the inconsistency in character models, moral values and awful first season are all weaknesses, but I argue its the hiatuses. Like the show or not, the writing and animation isnt good enough to justify waiting years to come out.

Overall, the show has potential, and it falls flat in ways exacerbated by the crew and the network. The show still has some terrifyingly competant villains and itll be exciting to see how everything resolves itself. Its something I love talking about and seeing, but its not something I idolize and gush over

Will they finally portray the codependent relationship, where the parts completely lose their identities, as an unhealthy one?
Who am I kidding? Of course not.

To he honest, thats the only way to really justify the build up to Pink Diamond's identity; a deconstruction of Garnet, the leader of the Crystal Gems and the embodiment of Rose Quartz' ideals.

I think they actually kind of did with Malachite?
Lapis was the most abusive parts of herself and Jasper was the neediest parts of herself.

I'm saying that garnet herself isn't the healthiest relationship around
There are some toys coming out with Ruby and Sapphire in wedding outfits, so maybe they’re going to learn how to have a healthier relationship where they aren’t literally unable to exist separated. :optimistic::optimistic:

The salt thus far:

Its ridiculous to think anyone would be okay being lied to for 5000 years, especially someone that can see into the future.
I can see of an example who shrugged off 12000 years of pure bullshit like that, but that one is from old-ass tokusatsu, so japanese values and all.

With our favorite power couple broken up it looks like someone else will have to lead the Crystal Gems.

I think it’s up to our favorite self-proclaimed leader to step up. I’m talking about Peridot! Because I would love to see that. It would be hilarious.
