Ooh, a place to discuss the series.

The special was great and it somewhat invigorated my interest in the series, I just hope we don't have to wait long for new episodes (I still hate CN for using vague timeframes, Summer just doesn't cut it anymore).

Also, who here collects merch from the show?

I got a friend of mine a small pendant with Rose’s shield on it like a year ago for her birthday. It wasn’t official, but it was still a really nice made piece of jewelry.

CN would make such a killing if they sold replicas of gems for cosplay and Halloween but a lot of stores on etsy already beat them to the punch.
I mean, look how long it took them to start selling official copies of Steven’s shirt. That should have been out after the first season. They would have sold like crazy.

There are miscellaneous blind box figures/keychains, UFO plush toys, and Cartoon Network-produced merch, but I can't say any of it is very appealing. It looks like bootlegs.
Yeah, and even the POPs are iffy. I know that people were REALLY creeped out by the Pearl POP. Fans have been asking for higher-quality figures and even producing their own, but it looks like CN's more comfortable with cheap stuff.

The few pieces of merch that people think are good are the art book (even after the Concrete fiasco), the children's books ("The Answer" and "Fusion for Beginners and Experts"), and the two vinyl records that were released (one is a now-out-of-print SDCC-exclusive that has "Stronger than You" and an exclusive acoustic cover of "Love Like You" performed by Sugar and the other is basically a physical version of iTunes soundtrack).

Concrete fiasco?

There was a joke character included in the art book called Concrete. She erred a bit on the racist stereotype in appearance and "couldnt read".

Why they thought that was ok given their fan base, who knows.
The funny thing is that newer editions of the book have the entire page that Concrete was on reworked and now features an in-depth explanation on what they meant by "Design-a-Gem" in the original (it was just a little game/practice where one storyboard artist would draw a character and then others would add descriptive text to flesh out the character).

Another thing they altered was, surprisingly enough, the page featuring prototype designs for pilot Amethyst. One of the designs was labeled "Chola bodysuit" while another was labeled "'Naw you stupid' Girl" and the fandom felt uncomfortable with that.

Maybe it's 'cause most of my collection is anime characters, but POPs just don't look right with prominent noses, IMO.
From what I've heard it's the mouth that's the issue, if the POP didn't have it or the line was thinner it'd be decent.
