It's worth noting that you can live there as long as you're gainfully employed and follow all the other rules of countries that actually have borders. Nick Land (who lives there) describes it thus:

I hate to use this argument, but why Is GamerGate a thing in the CURRENT YEAR. I am sure people would have move on by now, but no, every six fucking months, with clockworth precision It comes back to smack me right on my Lithuanian-Paraguayan face to bore the shit out of me. I had never, fucking ever seen people this much manufactured outrage until those dark days in 2015, at no point did It seem like there was any legitemate concern over the subject from either side. Hey, asshole, IGN lies to you, Gaming Press was never unbiased, It was always shit, one of It's first publications was called "Nintendo Power" I doubt It had much of an objective perspective. I mean, sure the reviewers got paid to lie, but that has always been a joke with movie and game reviews. There was a TV Show, The Critic, all about that, even then there were always independent reviewers like Yahtzee and Totalbiscuit (Or whoever you personally like, that's not the point I am triying to make) Not to bash too much just one side, but the other is just the typical Feminist lolcascade, to which I can't add anything more, execpt confirm that yes, It's fucking retarded. Look, there's always going to be someone, left or right, who will try to undermind freedom of expression, radicalism is just an aspect to any ideology, one which you must try to distance yourself as much as possible, and push forward as those extremes start to fade, even If there are short resurgences. Also, Bob sucks. Sorry for the rant I love you all.

I thought classic vidya was what this dense gweilo knew best. Everybody knows:

Just saying, the fundamental basis of the Star Trek society is that scarcity is a thing of the long past. I guess the idea is that humans would progress past materialism once everybody could in theory own anything, and move into an era of generosity if they knew they would never need anything.

But that is never going to happen, and it doesn't help anyone to pretend that it has happened already.
The problem with post-scarcity stuff is people will always want more, all you did was just raise the baseline. It's like how some people think we'd be living in some kind of communist utopia if we figured out a way to meet everyone's needs. If anything, trading will still happen but on a grander scale and with less people starving. There are no magic quotas to hit that'll result in a society with zero conflict and be eternally content. Life is all about growth and expansion.

You might as well put the world in a bottle and figure out how to freeze time. It'll always be an uphill battle where the little victories are what counts as it's all we can ever have.

Because that was probably the first time in their entitled, spoiled lives someone stood up to them and told them no, and they couldn't find a way to get their way anyway.

And instead of coming to the realization that sometimes you don't always get your way and maturing, they fixate on the one time they "lost."

Remember, these people cried so loud the U.N. set up a special meeting just to hear them bitch and moan. If the U.N. Is going to listen to them, who do those pleb gamers think they are for not doing the same.

I'd like to note that The Orville actually worked around this in a slightly more realistic way: they're a post-scarcity society as well, but it's explicitly noted in-universe that being post-scarcity doesn't mean being post-competition. People just compete over different things (specifically reputation) when all their material desires have been made moot.

But I agree, a real post-scarcity society would look something like Calhoun's rat experiment, right before everything went to hell and scarcity reasserted itself with a vengeance. One of the problems that Bob has is not only an inability to distinguish fact from fiction, but a fanatical belief in Whig history that he feels justifies, well, anything. Not that he would describe it in those terms, of course- I would bet money he couldn't tell you what Whig history was without googling it.

I was speaking from the optimistic point of view that someone invents some magic box that gives you anything you want with absolutely no draw back. Eventually someone is going to go "Dude, what if I had TWO magic boxes?" followed by "What if I had a planet of my junk?" and "What if I had a solar system?". It'll just keep getting bigger. Of course, that scenario is still going to hit the issue of space and people will fight over that but there's no "peaceful communist utopia" ending.

If post-scarcity meant no more "what if I had more stuff?" then Bob wouldn't be a fatass since he lives a life where he eat six times the rations a human would need whenever he felt like it. For a man who thinks farmers are unnecessary, he sure isn't facing any food scarcity.

Cause Nate Silver was so right last time.

The best part is when you go to N3koboyy's profile and it's some trans person with a chaturbate and manyvids account linked in their bio but because they think Jessica's firing was justified Blob, Matt Myers (https://kiwifarms.net/threads/matt-myers-m_m_myers-matt-nerdy-skull.23287/) and the like are trying to claim they're a Nazi gamergopher.

We're on the same page on it never actually happening, but if you need it to happen as part of the setup for your space story, you should write a better space story. But failing that, relegating it all to the backstory and moving on with the actual interesting parts is the next-best thing. (If I was forced to use this backstory at gunpoint, I'd invent some local equivalent of Dunbar's number with regards to material possessions, that we're currently just not advanced enough to reach.)

But the only way for Bob not to be a fatass is if the Superior Future had hard drugs programmed into the replicator. He "eats his feelings" (his exact words on disclosing the beetus, IIRC) so it's for stimulation and pleasure, basically. Yes, I feel gross using those words in connection with Bob. But if there was some equivalent of Soma floating around the market, he would be knocking it back so fast that unrepentant heroin addicts would be telling him to control himself.

Sorry Blobbo, but this is the only version of "Skyscraper" that I recognize as legitimate:

Bob's adventures in a post-scarcity society would end with him ending up like Bender, in that one Futurama episode where he turned human and ate himself to death. And Bob STILL wouldn't be happy because he would know that the Mayonnaise Ghouls were also enjoying free money and that there was no chance to lock them up in a gulag and punish them for wrongthink since all crime would be abolished.

It's the day the bubble burst for a lot of SJW's in gaming, it's when they found out that large chunks of gaming despised them and knew they where full of shit and that gaming wasnt their little hugbox. pretty much everything has to be gamergate because that's how they can articulate reality.

Bobs rambling about space and scarcity are built on presumption after presumption. The Universe so far has proved to be a deeply hostile enviroment and that's assuming any life forms that might be out there don't consider us as rivals or prey. I think in the end the problem is he see's technology as a way to escape ourselves.

I've always thought this ted talks video summerizes why the Superior future science will solve our problems is bullshit.

When visiting the Chipman household

"Who's yelling downstairs?"
"(under breath) I was hoping you wouldn't ask. (in an audible voice) That's a... very talkative... plague rat."
(Guest goes to see who it is while Bob is doing a movie review) "Who are you arguing with?"
"I'm BU-SY doing a movie review. Who invited you? Go away!"
"Can't you write those? I don't see why reviewing movies requires irritable arguing"
"It's for my YouTube channel. Chris, get him out of my house!"
"Is there something I can help you with Bob?"
"Just an unwelcome visitor barging into my apartment!"
"Hey, could you please come upstairs? My brother's in the middle of something."

When Chris's daughter is telling kids about her parents

"My dad Chris was wonderful. So exciting, dependable, kind, patient... There's too many positives to list"
"Didn't you also have an uncle, Mom?"
"Bob? Well, he's uh... let me think here... oh! Do any of you want a Bowser statue?"
"Nah" "No thanks, auntie." "I'll have it!"
(Later, when trying to lift it upstairs) "Can you balance it? It keeps falling to one side and is about to break the banister. Ooh, got it upstairs. Oh great, we're going to need to put it at an angle to fit it through the door. (makes a noise) That didn't break anything did it?"
"What do you think, Jimmy?"
"Changed my mind. It's too big."

Fight? With what?

Oh wait. Maybe you'll want some... guns?

[This is where I would insert Bob making fun of gun owner's fantasies of fighting the government but I don't feel like searching through the thread.]
It's ironic how the left always thinks the right will enact some fascist dictatorship while it's them who want to take guns away and limit free speech.

Something that Bob has probably never put thought into the Post-Scarcity Moon Wheat Utopia he has Austically dreamed up is, what is he going to do with all the trash and waste. It can be noted that once something becomes so plentiful it becomes taken for grant and we tend to waste it. So imagine the landfill and logistical nightmare it would be to have 7+ billion average Joes just going to throw away their tablets yearly because they will get a new one. That is simply just one item.

I assumed he was just going to eat it.

This is what Bob actually believes.
