Mass Effect Andromeda: Shitstorm Edition - RIP Biowear

They don't sell off the IPs because deep down the top flight of EA know someone will come along with love, talent and who cherished the original games and will piss all over any kind of output EA had put out previously along that line. That's why we saw the spate of "knockoff" games that came about a little while ago and they fucking stormed gaming. You had Ken Levine's Bioshock Series which had very similar themes to System Shock and even stole half its name, then you had Cities Skylines which didn't so much beat SimCity as murder it to the point EA pulled the plug on Maxis.

I'm just sat here waiting for the Dead Space knockoff, tbh.
I can only hope EA one day dies off

The thing is, EA is sort of becoming a publisher of a handful of games. They are like Guitar-Hero Era Activision. They're slowly but surely driving all of their franchises to the ground, except for their sports games and Battlefield. Anthem is going to bomb, their other franchises don't make enough money, a lot of effort is going into mobile exploitation.

Pretty much this. And now System Shock is coming out with a sequel. Also Dungeon Keeper too, with War for the Overworld.

Eventually EA will become a Western Konami, with only Sports Games and Battlefield left as all its other studios are dead, and other studios have long since realized EA's game and don't bother selling to them if they have a profitable IP because they'll drain that shit dry and leave the studio with nothing. Also because EAs constant buying and crashing of studios has actually lost them more money than gained. Bioware will probably be the last casualty for now. CD Projekt shored itself up with a massive stock buyback and its stock is getting bigger and more expensive.

Ubisoft itself realized that they would face an EA fate if Activision bought them and fought them off with Chinese and Canadian Investment. I think the days of them rampantly consuming the industry is over, as they've milked all they can out of the well.

To pick on some of that, it was fascinating seeing the administrators of THQ basically block all and any offers made by EA. This is not something you see administrators do very often at all as their main interest is trying to get as much money back as humanly possible from the assets of the debtor.

EA is hopefully going to quietly die down to the efforts of their core, but they have supposedly founded a "moral compass" after Disney threatened them for their handling over Battlefront 2.

Ubisoft has face a few challenges over the years recently, with first Activision and now Vivendi breathing down the necks of the Guillemont's. The result has been to go back to basics with their games and make them pretty good fun to play again, you had Origins which was great and FC5 was pretty good fun as well.

If you believe their moral compass points to anything other than, "gouge fucktons of money from players' pockets," I've a bridge to sell you. May I remind everyone that the C&C Rivals mobile app shitfest with pay to win was after Battlefront 2. They've not changed. The only thing that made them back off was Disney being the 800lb gorilla that they are.

As for Ubishaft, until they drop their obsession with DRM and multiple layers of it I'm still boycotting them.

Bioware are going to die and unfortunately I fear they may be infecting the rest of the industry when they do, as ex Bioware types get jobs elsewhere and insert their autism. Jennifer Hepler was involved in writing the excellent pointy clicky adventure Unavowed from Blackwell devs Wadjet Eye (thankfully Dave Gilbert and Ben Chandler made her wind her neck in) but what if some of the spergs responsible for Andromeda and its daftest parts go elsewhere and can't be kept in line? What if that Mandeep bloke ends up writing large chunks of Pillars of Eternity 3?

Pillars of Eternity 2 already has playersexual companions and great dialogue like "Um...your bigotry is showing." The warning signs are starting to appear.

I don't remember that latter line at all but it is worrisome that every party member other than Edér and Pallegina want to bang the Watcher. At least nobody has mentioned they are trans today and the romance, such as it is, is confined to such an effort it doesn't become a plot tumour and I've not noticed any waifu wars online. Yet.

Also in Pillars 2 you can pick the "Cruel" dialogue options to be a total arsehole if you see fit. Bioware would never allow that because it would be promoting problematic behaviour. So it's relatively uninfected. For now.

I think that's just because the lead designer doesn't give much of a shit about companions, just game mechanics sperging.

The thing is, they've already seen their status diminish as a result of their stupidity elsewhere. Hamburger Helper has gone from "I was involved with Beamdog and a popular gaming franchise" to the comparative table-scraps of Wadjet Eye, who remain a miniscule studio entirely on purpose and who's official, full time staff is "3 and a half" that hilariously low overhead is why they work so well. Everything is minimal and because they're so small they don't need boat rockers, it'd have been far easier to throw her overboard if she started the same shit she did back at Beamdog who lest we forget climbed down pretty much entirely over Helper's shitty self insert writing and troon fapfic.

Manveer Heir fucked off to found his own studio with blackjack and hookers after ME:A tanked and he "left" Bioware Montreal (got shitcanned like the whole studio) but despite the fact its the easiest thing in the world to set up a company and announce projects with a little bit of artwork from a dude you commissioned he's been oddly silent and I suspect its because he's a piece of shit nobody's really willing to work with and is the epitome of a diversity hire. We'll hear from him, eventually, but its going to be some god-awful indie project he's mostly had to do himself.

Various studios who play the "DIVERDITEEEEEEE" game are finding there's no fucking market whatsoever for their stupid political shitshows and by god it hurts the bottom line hard.

Look in comparison where studios actually aim for realism in their diversity. Namely Rockstar and Rockstar North who got all sorts of flack from the usual screaming Diversity Crowd for not portraying L.A blacks as the totally noble savages innocents they are by... hiring and interviewing former gang members to get the speech, slang and behaviour correct.

Yep. Isn't that, you know, whitesplaining on the part of the Tumblrinas?

Also Ninja Theory, devs of Hellblade, got reeeee'd at for failing to portray paranoid schizophrenia in a correct manner even though they got a professor of psychiatry on board and interviewed people with same.

Where could they possibly go for a new Mass Effect Game though? The post ME3 universe is utterly fucked and everyone hates Ryder and crew so much continuing Andromeda's story line is out of the question.

The only plausible way forward is either a prequel or a huge (100+ years) time skip.

Even then they couldn't go anywhere without recycling, downgrading, or ripping from warhammer.

The glaring issue I found with continuing Mass Effect after the third one, even before we knew anything about Andromeda, was; "How do you top mecha space c'thulu zerg?" I don't think you can, and bioware's Ivan Ooze stand-in really solidifies that sentiment.

Biowarefags haven't gone extinct, they're just fleeing to other RPG devs. It's only a matter of time until the only thing CDPR or Obsidian makes are soap opera power fantasy waifu simulators.

If bioware produces power fantasy waifu simulators, they're pretty shit power fantasy waifu simulators. Hell you can't even romance the best companions in most of their recent releases (Thankfully).

True, but I don't think you have to. Dragon Age 2 had a lot of problems, but being set in and around one single city wasn't one of them. If you narrow the focus (say, one planet or solar system), dial back the powers and resources, and just tell the story, I think it could work. If they want to re-use the setting, I don't think they want to get caught in the Star Wars trap of ever-larger Death Stars.

>BioWare spends an inordinate amount of time hyping same-sex romance options for male Shepard
>Get an eyeful of James
>Find out that he isn't one of them
... JFC, BioWare, you used to have the best writing in the industry. Now you can't even pander right.

I don't think the SJW types infect the industry so much as its the companies themselves. They are big publicly traded companies. When they buy a developer, they are interested in using that name and reputation to get profits out of them. All they have to do is slash their budget and increase productivity with their marketing team budget helping boost sales. So over time they overwork the people who are there, and if they leave they bring in cheap hires that will do anything to work in games and get the recognition they know they deserve. These are usually the autist fanfiction writers or transgender furrykin programmers. And if they are SJW friendly, thats good PR for them to use on most "progressive" news websites, get them some good articles, keep their studio name and game in the news. Good word of mouth on Tumblr.

Eventually like a vampire they suck the developer dry until their name and reputation mean nothing, and then throw them into the gutter, before looking for the next victim. Gotta keep those profit projections up!

I wouldn't argue they're good at what they do, but it is 100% their aim to produce power fantasy waifu sims, yes.

I stopped at Gamestop today to kill some time before my shift and saw multiple copies of Andromeda in the bargain bin for $10.

Yeesh.

I saw the super special ultimate edition or whatever for like $12 at my local game store the other day.

Still couldn't do it.

...I must confess, I actually bought it.

Well, I wanted to see just if it was as faeculent as people were saying and in all fairness it wasn't bad. It was tolerable enough that I could play it through to the end, which is more than can be said for Inquisition, but it was so inconsistent. For every competently written or designed quest there were three or four that were groan-worthy and riddled with plot holes.

Someone had to take one for the team, you know.

I then uninstalled it and haven't looked back. The 47 GB it occupied (!!!!) was refilled a few months thereafter with the superior ELEX.
