Um, no, rhetoric is about the use of words to persuade. Unless you're trying to persuade someone that you're an asshole at whom they ought to be angry, "causing emotional pain and distress" is completely irrelevant.

In the case of Vox, his main skill actually is convincing people he's an asshole. I prefer laughing at him to getting angry at him, though, because he gets extremely angry about people viewing him as the hilarious joke he is, and that makes him even funnier.

For an idiot who views himself as some kind of classical thinker, though, he completely misses the point when he says that about rhetoric.

He's so fucking dumb he doesn't know the difference between rhetoric and oratory.

I think he doesn't realize that at least half of the value of his blog are comments. The more diverse and intelligent discussions under posts are, the more readers they will attract.

I found his blog by some link to the post from some time ago that had a very interesting discussion in the comments.
I stopped reading his blog, when he purged his commentariat to the point that only semi-r.etarded sycophants and yes-men were left. This makes the comments completely uninteresting, especially as I think that he bans everyone he suspects of being smarter than him. He is not a great writer, and his blog posts are so-so in themselves.

You would think that guy his age that spends so much time in the interwebs would understand how blogosphere works. The value of his blog is very dependent on the value of the comments. I think many people lost patience with Vox after they noticed lower quality of discussions.

He's a fucking tard. He's the alt-right incarnation of the boomer meme.

Voxday is intelligent, but he's also human, and he falls into the trappings of his ego, his following has affirmed his self-perceived righteousness and he bleeds snark and pride to stain a pretty good intellectual record. all things being considered, he is closer than 99% of people, and lays out many phenomena in clear ways which contributes to the enlightenment of millions and so is of God. forgive vox for his snark and hypocrisy, for he works harder to save Truth and Love than you and is succeeding. None of the most popular intellectuals are immune from this. the egoic drive which helps them reach the top is difficult to reign+rein in as the ring of power deludes and entraps their worst aspects. JPB is pretty good in this regard but he and vox differ in their assessment of the present. is it too late to prevent mass violence while preserving Love and Liberty? probably but JPB says to try on the individual level anyway and improve yourself. Vox says its far too late and has damned most people to hell. in this way JPB is much closer to christ, unless vox is right and he and his followers just get genocided for trying to be good. I think the best play is to hedge your bets and build the ark which survives the flood but also saves as many of those lost in darkness. this is the best move. aim between radical self preservation and radical redemption/conversion of all variants of your enemies, because perhaps they are one and the same.

With age comes decreasing tolerance for opposing viewpoints.

I can understand some of that as you start to feel like you're repeating yourself...

...but then you have to repeat yourself because you're attracting new readers - which is what you want.

Usually.

There are sometimes I wonder if Vox self-sabotages or if he just never grew out of his troll phase or learn to vent it on places like this like a normal degenerate.

I don't think it's a general truth. I think that fanaticism is much more common in youth, and with age people tend to understand different perspectives.

I guess it depends on intelligence. Morons with age get more entrenched in their positions, while intelligent people with open minds might become more confident in their way of thinking to the point they feel it's worthy to put on paper, but at the same time they keep in mind they are only human, and they are open for debate.

This is the most drastic difference between Vox and JBP. I admit I was thinking about them when I wrote the sentences above.

Back the the initial post which reactivated this thread:

It's a complete nonsense that specific words elicit specific reactions in your audience. What kind of reaction you will get depends more on who you are. If you are some alt-right clown, no matter how precisely you will target SJW insecurities, they will just gloss over, because you are some minor alt-right troll.

Anyway it's always better to attack ideas not people. That's what we do in civilized discourse, and Vox might not know it because he is not really white :)

I though this guy used to be in favor of Israel.

Also Ben cried less than Vox did when comixgate rhethoric'd his ass.

Seriously what makes Vox a cow is his inability to take it while he's always dishing it out.

This. So much this.

I wonder if VD ever encountered a guy by the name of Billy Beck? Beck was a blogger, active about a decade ago. Very anti-authoritarian (practically sovcit type, in fact). But Beck had a LOT of the same behavioral patterns -- I was reading some conversations in a blog archive, and it's uncanny how similar their behavior was, particularly when someone disagreed with them. Same 'I'm smarter than you, and you're an idiot' snarky attitude.

No, I don't think they're the same person. But I do wonder if there was some cross pollination.

Unfortunately, neither are unique. Vox Day is just one of the colorful examples of moronis vulgaris.

I think I figured it out.

It's the same thing I've seen watching some lefties talk about Trump. They need his fans to be a cult. Doesn't matter what the reality is - nobody can just be "a fan" or sometimes disagree with the guy, it has to be a full on cult with worship.

Pretty much this:

Guess we shouldn't be surprised, he's been adopting all the other tactics of the left.

Yes, I think it's a pure projection. I don't even think that JBP wants his fan to be blind followers (his Patreon be damned). If he is truly inspired by Nietzsche, Nietzsche himself said something along the lines that you should outgrow your teacher (I don't have time to find the quote right now).

Being a blind follower who never questions his senpai is something VoxDay expects from his followers. In his mind he is so much smarter than thou that you should just shut up and do what he tells you.

Who really cares what JBP said about Kavanaugh? He is a human being with his flaws. Sometimes he is right sometimes he is wrong.

Sometime ago I asked Vox Day on his blog why it's so important what JBP says. Who cares? He answered that JBP has many followers, and he is considered the most influential contemporary intellectual. I asked him again: "By whom? By some pimply young men?"

Personally, I think it's a tragedy of our times if JBP is really considered TMICI by some. It's just a testament to the rampant intellectual poverty we all endure.

What's funny is on... Dave Rubin i think it was, JBP and them made that exact same joke: "how bad are the times if we're the intellectual pillars."

Though i suppose one could argue that things have always been that bad. But here we are and let the youth find wisdom where they may.

I think it goes a little beyond projection though. I have seen two very different bloggers both point out that Vox self-sabotages any attempts to be a true leader himself. Say what you will about JBP, he at least seems to grasp basics of leadership like "don't be an ass."

Truly a romance for the ages...

What makes me laugh this time is Vox has talked before about how guys need to marry and have kids to save civilisation.

So...

How do you get a woman following Vox's example & rules above?

(Isn't a sign of cults them giving contradicting orders to drive people into unquestioning obedience??)

I had an impression that he was talking about workplace situations. Well, this kind of rules were the norm just 100 years ago, and then only pure losers didn't get married. There were rules of courtship. Nowadays, these rules are still in use in traditional communities. If you think about it, the arranged marriage so foreign to us, modern people, makes sense of some level, as marriage joins two families, not only the couple.

Yes some friends and i have been making jokes that with all their screeching feminists are about to bring back the rules of arranged marriages and formalized courtship.

Except of course those are oppressive patriarchy so we'll probably need to rebrand them. How about... "formalized negotiated consent recognized by friends and family"
?

I am not sure anyone has ever been as jealous of anyone as Vox is jealous of Jordan Peterson.
What's funny is how a friend of mine put it once: JBP isn't like those other self-help gurus. He's not promising you fabulous wealth or that big promotion. He's just promising to make you an adult.

In other words if he's running a cult, it's the most normie-oriented cult I've ever seen.

Though I'm still not sure what Vox's cult is supposed to be offering. I think just lulz.
