Not her husband. As I read it, OP and his GF got involved with another couple who were married and thought it was just a bit of fun. OP's GF fucked the other couples husband.
Then the married couple started to argue (presumably because the wife has some mental anguish due to grief and having her husband fuck someone else is probably not the answer.) OP and his GF attempt to repair the married couple relationship which in turn causes them to start having issues. OP's GF then admits that she loves OP but she's not in love with him and that she loves the other couples husband more, which I assume happens in the course of year trying to help out the other couple and becoming emotionally involved with them.
They were together 9 years. And they're breaking up because OP and his GF thought just fucking around with another married couple was gonna just fun. Instead they're just another casualty of poly and people who think they can have all the cake and eat it too.
But you're right. They played a dumb game of 'let's open our long-term monogamous relationship' and it collapsed after a year of it.

Naw. It was confusingly written. Poly stories need to come with some sort of map key because it's confusing as fuck when they refer to them as A or B instead of a name.
