He’s their hill to die on because his behavior is emblematic of the behavior of the whole industry. This is their standard practice. This is what they do. They are fighting against being forced to operate as an actual professional industry & not just a club of like-minded weirdos. They want to be able to continue their illegal business practices & Waid was the one dumb enough to make it clear in open-comms how the industry operates. Things that in the past, everyone knew but nobody could prove because they were done in secret & in hotel rooms at conventions or on private phone calls unannounced to the world are now being done in the open, announced to everyone, in half-private online message groups. And for the first time, someone has proof of it & is upsetting the apple cart because they don’t care about being welcomed into the industry. They just want it to operate legally & ethically in the future instead of illegally & unethically like it has for decades.
If the tech of 2018 existed in 1992, the Image 7 would have been in the same boat as YaBoi & Malin & Brett & Ethan & others. There wasn’t social media to create a hate campaign against them back then. But it existed in the industry. If had Image failed, none of those guys ever would have gotten work in comics again. If the industry could have mobilized the Woke Crowd & operatives like Lauren back then, they would have & crushed Image before it was born. They would have cut off every avenue. They never would have gotten the original partnership with Malibu which got them off the ground. They would have died in infancy & we’d all be talking about those great artists that stopped getting work & wondering what happened to Jim Lee & Todd McFarlane. There’s no McFarlane toys. Jim isn’t running DC. They’re both storyboarding in Hollywood at best or doing indie self-pub stuff at worst.
