True, but after doing a bit of digging I can't seem to pin down what royalties Waid would have. This article seems to indicate that Waid doesn't get a whole lot from DC, and I can't seem to find anything about what potential royalties he gets from Marvel. The general consensus seems to be while the shrewder big name creators might still seem to be able to draft up a contract that allows them to keep their rights, but most still go with work-for-hire contracts that just have a higher payout than the newbies and hipsters. The real money seems to be when they get positions as editors or as producers and executive producers over at Marvel Entertainment.Unless you're a big name, you sign what they put in front of you or fuck off. Of course, Waid actually has been a big name.
It's why I also side-eye the CGers in insist that the influx of diversity characters like Riri and such are writers trying to get a Donut Steel out in the wild for potential movie royalties. All the evidence I'm finding so far seems to say that writers likely wouldn't even get leftover breadcrumbs even if Disney decides to use their characters.
