Diseased #Comicsgate - The Culture Wars Hit The Funny Books!

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
I still feel like everyone talking about CG being "dead" is a bit odd. They're still going to lose their shit and call someone CG as soon as fans complain about Riri Williams stories being dogshit...so how is that "dead"? It would be like journalists saying GG is dead despite them considering literally everything GG four years after everyone stopped giving a fuck.
It's also not really dead just because EVS got annoyed he can't take it over as a company name and is "leaving it" (he won't; like I don't think he can leave drama, he'll continue to self-publish most likely). He can still do comics independently, as can most of the outsiders even with the split. It's just it was really fucking retarded to centralize a consumer riot over a medium that insults them even as it relies on them.

That they're crowing about disagreements really shows how authoritarian and nat-bol they are.

Whenever I see posts like that I start wondering if people involved in this drama have ever even been part of the comics community before CG. Larsen is talking about there being too many crossovers, events and continuity getting exceptional. These complaints are not new, I remember these topics being talked about 10 or so years ago. And whenever we'd get new event or crossover or reboot people would bring back these topics again.

Its doubly ironic because its Erik Larsen, writer of The Savage Dragon, a comic so drenched in continuity that the first two questions old readers ask when they see images from current issues is "Who is that?" and "Why is he fucking a 14 year-old girl?"

Well you know, it is always someone else who is the problem.

What makes this extra funny is that this is partially how SWJs got into the power. Idea was that crossovers/events/reboots were bad for attracting new people so books that don't really adhere to continuity and focus on (((current year))) political/social/cultural issues would bring in new people. Fraction's Hawkeye was a hit in monthly charts and sold very well in collected editions, it basically opened the flood gates for Marvel. Similar to how Harley/Grayson were doing good for DC during New 52 and they went all in with DC You that collapsed immediately.

To sum it up, be careful about agreeing with people like Larsen because, even if he agrees that there are problems, you won't like his solutions.

Vertigo was always DC's more experimental/political/random imprint. It has tanked a lot in recent years due to Image taking its niche and DC even tried moving Vertigo's stuff to DC with New 52 to boost sales, didn't really work. DC You was also "doing Vertigo in DC proper" and it flopped as well. So now they are trying again to revitalize Vertigo (and Black Label could probably also be considered as another version of Vertigo) with new pitches.

So I'd have hard time believing that this has anything to do with CG and it is just DC trying again to figure out wtf they should be doing with Vertigo.
Yeah, a lot of the early Vertigo stuff would be considered SJW if it came out today. I recently re-read Milligan’s Shade the Changing Man, and you can barely go 3 issues without some sort of bigoted white villain, a mention about how gender and sexuality are fluid, or some comment about the inherent corruption of American society. Differences are that Shade actually has some good writing (trails off a bit by the end of the series, but whatever) and that it started in 1990 when those concepts were fresh and shocking. Modern SJWs parrot the same exact ideas almost 30 years later and act like they’re fucking avant-garde Alan Moores.

I don't think the constant crossovers and events and shit was ever really brought up as a problem on the Comicsgate side. I heard a lot about the SJWs taking over comics. Not so much about that.

You can't have continuity reboot issues if you just say fuck continuity and do whatever.

Well that and a lot of recent crossover events were used as the hamfisted the origins for a lot of nuMarvel characters to cut down the need to actually write origins for them: Kamala Khan came about because of the Inhumans fart cloud event, Lady Thor was able to come about by Thor losing his hammer in Original Sin, comics like the last run of She Hulk & Riri Williams were brought in due to the events of Civil War 2, and whole lot of autism - including the beginning of the All New, All Different line and bombs like the all female A-Force - sprang off the conclusions of the event Secret Wars.

Crossover events have been another thing that's been steadily flushing sales even before recent debacles what with Marvel's other antics, but using events that are designed as spring boards for Donut Steels on top of that certainly doesn't endear anyone to those characters.

Now I'm bummed because I was going to pull up that Kwanza tweet I've brought up in the past but it appears to be gone. He was calming people don't like these current stories because they're too intellectually challenging for them which I just adored because the guy is saying surface level "I'm black and people hate me" is some high intellect concept that breaks new ground.

When I was younger, I've gotten into fights with people who'd call my mother a whore because I didn't inherit my (black) father's color and looked like a random white boy, you're not blowing my mind here. Imagine just how astronomically brain dead you have to be to write some basic bitch "People hate me for being black", expect people to go "Woah, I never thought about it like that", and have people celebrating in the streets that the great Kwanza just destroyed the concept of bigotry.

Basically "To be fair you gotta have a high IQ to understand nuMarvel...."

A consumer movement can only be snuffed out by changing the minds of the people involved. Nobody's mind was changed by autistic screeching. EVS wandering off also hasn't changed a single mind. These people patting their own asses isn't going to result in one more book bought, or un-close one comic store.

You might have to search through the archives for that tweet:

Good luck.

If they can’t see them on twitter, they don’t exist.

And Stan Lee just passed, apparently. Interesting to see what comes of that.
"BUY OUR $20 BOOK FULL OF NU-MARVEL YOU NEVER ASKED FOR!" on a book filled with them taking about how much Stan meant to him....so much so that they didn't do anything about his situation and once used him as a weapon to win internet fights.

Sjw will probably celebrate the death of another "racist old straight white man" like they always do. They find some dirt and will insult him.
Nah, it'll more likely be we'll see a bunch of "RIP in peace, Stan Lee!" even from people who either never talked about him or his work (or even from a few of the people who were tripping over themselves to comment "UGH I knew he was a creep!" back when those harassment accusations to cover for all the people robbing him were going down) and maybe some "collector's edition" reprints of some of his old work at triple the price or an anthology book marketed as a "tribute" to Stan Lee that will have fuck all to do with any of his characters or contributions and will be released 3 years after his death in tried n' true Marvel tardiness fashion.

Spicy takes, will be looking for more:

Zaid, at least, seems genuine with his reaction:
