The OP really needs to be updated with a clearer summary of this thread's purpose.

@Yaoi Huntress Earth Are you a bad enough dude to take on editing the OP so that we avoid people posting artwork that doesn't fit in here?

The first one would’ve been a pretty cute OC, ngl. But then you see it’s supposed to be a girl from One Piece (Robin, if my memory serves me right) and it’s all kinds of NOPE.gif

The other one... uuuugh. No, just no from the very start.

Well, she's black and white now.
That was both the best and worst pun I've ever heard, thank you. Anyway, time for a discussion:

What do you think are good and bad ways to show sexuality and gender "representation" in media?

Subtly. Not basing the entire character around their sexuality/gender as tumblr would think it.

There's a big gap between having a gay character, and having someone make gay as their 'character' so to speak. Those who are of the LGBT community irl normally don't go parading around their orientation or gender. They're regular people who just happen to be gay/trans/etc.

Tumblr thinks for someone to be gay, they have to wear flags, talk about how much they love (wo)men, or pick up on that 'Down with Cis' shit. Just make a character with a decent enough backstory, and then add a note saying their gay.

Bad - Making characters personality revolve almost entirely around sexuality/gender
Good- Writing like them just about any other character, giving them backstory and whatnot

I mean I can go into detail if you feel this is too obvious or vague of an answer.

Don't have it be literally all there is to them, and don't constantly bring it up. Have them be a LGBT character, not a LGBT character. Put their personality first, and what's in their pants/what they like in their partner's pants second.

There's a difference between a character mentioning they're gay like two seconds after they're introduced and never shutting up about it, and a guy mentioning once how much of an asshole his high school boyfriend was.

Also, don't brag about it. Nobody cares that your main character is gay. What they care about it plot and the motivations and personalities of your characters. I swear, so many creators treat LGBT characters like they're the newest attraction in a traveling freakshow.

Adding on to that, the few exceptions to where bragging on about sexuality would make sense is in a dating sim that takes the piss out of humping all the things.

For race, I prefer an understated design that sticks out without being ugly. Real-world references of normal citizens help a lot, even with making uglified characters.

It's possible to have fuck-off huge noses without making the rest of the face look misshapen like a propaganda poster when you balance it out with appealing features. Then again, constantly using only one ethnic feature will not give diversity either.

Changing existing characters to suit your politics is bad. Quite disrespectful to the original creator and devoid of any originality.
Giving them a full fleshed personality, dialogue and interests that isn't only about them being a minority is good.
Design wise, characters don't necessarily have to be conventionally attractive, but they do need to be interesting. A good character is someone the audience finds intriguing. Making them incredibly butt ugly to represent someone not conventionally attractive doesn't create any connection between the viewer and the character, it's just akin to looking at a freakshow.
Speaking of, incorporating very stereotypical features (downright racist sometimes) of their race is bad. Not every black person looks like Little Black Sambo, and no doubt many are offended by this attempt at 'representation'.
