EU Le Gilets Jaune protests thread - Do you hear the people sing? Singing the songs of angry men?

One protester has died and dozens were injured as almost a quarter of a million people took to the streets of France, angry at rising fuel prices.

The female protester who died was struck after a driver surrounded by demonstrators panicked and accelerated.

The "yellow vests", so-called after the high-visibility jackets they are required to carry in their cars, blocked motorways and roundabouts.

They accuse President Emmanuel Macron of abandoning "the little people".

Mr Macron has not so far commented on the protests, some of which have seen demonstrators call for him to resign.

But he admitted earlier in the week that he had not "really managed to reconcile the French people with their leaders".

Nonetheless, he accused his political opponents of hijacking the movement in order to block his reform programme.

What has happened so far?
Some 244,000 people took part in protests across France, the interior ministry said in its latest update.

It said 106 people were injured during the day, five seriously, with 52 people arrested.

Most of the protests have been taking place without incident although several of the injuries came when drivers tried to force their way through protesters.

Chantal Mazet, 63, was killed in the south-eastern Savoy region when a driver who was taking her daughter to hospital panicked at being blocked by about 50 demonstrators, who were striking the roof of her vehicle, and drove into them.

The driver has been taken into police custody in a state of shock.

In Paris protesters approaching the Élysée Palace, the president's official residence, were repelled with tear gas.

Why are drivers on the warpath?
The price of diesel, the most commonly used fuel in French cars, has risen by around 23% over the past 12 months to an average of €1.51 (£1.32; $1.71) per litre, its highest point since the early 2000s, AFP news agency reports.

World oil prices did rise before falling back again but the Macron government raised its hydrocarbon tax this year by 7.6 cents per litre on diesel and 3.9 cents on petrol, as part of a campaign for cleaner cars and fuel.

The decision to impose a further increase of 6.5 cents on diesel and 2.9 cents on petrol on 1 January 2019 was seen as the final straw.

Speaking on Wednesday, the president blamed world oil prices for three-quarters of the price rise. He also said more tax on fossil fuels was needed to fund renewable energy investments.

How big is the movement?
It has broad support. Nearly three-quarters of respondents to a poll by the Elabe institute backed the Yellow Vests and 70% wanted the government to reverse the fuel tax hikes.

More than half of French people who voted for Mr Macron support the protests, Elabe's Vincent Thibault told AFP.

"The expectations and discontent over spending power are fairly broad, it's not just something that concerns rural France or the lower classes," he said.

The BBC's Lucy Williamson in Paris says the movement has grown via social media into a broad and public criticism of Mr Macron's economic policies.

Are opposition politicians involved?
They have certainly tried to tap into it. Far-right leader Marine Le Pen, who was defeated by Mr Macron in the second round of the presidential election, has been encouraging it on Twitter.

She said: "The government shouldn't be afraid of French people who come to express their revolt and do it in a peaceful fashion."

Laurent Wauquiez, leader of the centre-right Republicans, called on the Macron government to scrap the next planned increase in carbon tax on fossil fuels in January to offset rising vehicle fuel prices.

Mr Castaner has described Saturday's action as a "political protest with the Republicans behind it".

Olivier Faure, leader of the left-wing Socialist Party said the movement - which has no single leader and is not linked to any trade union - had been "born outside political parties".

"People want politicians to listen to them and respond. Their demand is to have purchasing power and financial justice," he said.

Is there any room for compromise?
On Wednesday, the government announced action to help poor families pay their energy and transport bills.

Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced that 5.6 million households would receive energy subsidies. Currently 3.6 million receive them.

A state scrappage bonus on polluting vehicles would also be doubled for France's poorest families, he said, and fuel tax credits would be brought in for people who depend on their cars for work.

Protesters have mocked the president relentlessly as "Micron" or "Macaron" (Macaroon) or simply Manu, the short form of Emmanuel, which he famously scolded a student for using.

To be honest, I don't blame the driver at all.

Pretty telling how the mainstream media is choosing to cover the timely death of the most boring nothing president we've ever had as if it happened today instead of this gigantic happening.
They're not the only ones ignoring it

There's one post related to the protests, and it's about looters seizing the opportunity to loot

I been seeing this on /pol/ and Tim Pool did a video of this problem

it seems gas was raised to help the environment
upsetting the working class
the protestors and rioters seem to be right and left wing, working with each other. I guess, Nationalists and Antifa in as described on Tim Pool's video
they are known as the Yellow Jackets cause of the neon yellow vests
It seems Macron is losing lots of support but in turn, seems Trump is slightly growing support from to the French people.

I think that's about it, and fill in whatever else I missed

A fun side note.
In America, most people wearing yellow jackets at protest are worn by people working for Leftist human rights organizations, such ACUL, SPLC, etc.... but only helping Leftisit people.
I seen Yellow Jackets follow people around, like InfoWars Jornos, interrupting interviews and telling people not to talk to certain Jornos, and helping leftist whom are getting arrested with legal advice.

And I hope pro Trump people start wearing the yellow jackets at protest just to piss off the far left.
Meme the yellow jacket against the far left

The responses from neoliberals and certain members of the commentariat have been some modern version of "let them eat cake" .

From the comments on a NYT article
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/02/...n-yellow-vest-protests.html#commentsContainer

President Macron is doing something very proactive and not only promoting green energy a boost but finding a way to pay for it.
Now is the time for Macron's government to let them strike, revolt and burn their neighborhoods and not work for so long that they loose their jobs, empty the unions coffers.

Let there be no bread and let there be no cake left.

Macron is trying to drag France into the future - a future that is not a nationalist disaster.. for that he needs to be supported.
Do the French want Marine Le Pen leading their country?.. you'll notice she's right there cheering on the mayhem.
If she comes on board to lead the country then get ready for WWIII breaking out in Europe, with Putin scooping up half the continent again for Russia.
Those who don't learn from the past are doomed to repeat it...Be careful what you wish for, French people.

They're burning cars and smashing windows because of an increase in fuel taxes!?!

France is one of the richest countries in the world. In 2015 their GDP per hour of work was 7th in the world, at about $66. By comparison, our was 5th, at about $68. The UK was 15th, at $52 per hour.

If these folks can't deal with an increase in fuel taxes, something is very wrong. There must be more to this story. Is it inequality of income? Is it a deterioration in living standards?

Of course income inequality is the main cause of American political instability. Racial animosity is a close second.

Are there any French folks here who can explain this?

Macron good, French people bad #ClimateChangeReal!

Can none of these people understand that a $1200 a year tax out of nowhere is going to piss off at least a 1/3 of a population? They probably can't figure out why anyone (but a RACIST) would protest against a leader of the perfect globalist technocrat mold like Macron.

1. Group of police stand down and refuse to suppress protestors - remove helmets whilst cheered by crowd. Vid in tweet link below

That's complete bullshit.
It's not a show of solidarity, it's a de-escalation tactic. When there's a somewhat peaceful standoff like this, they remove their helmets because it makes people fell less threatened and they're less likely to be violent.
They do that ALL the time and every time there's a bunch of idiots on twitter or facebook who go all "LOOK LOOK THEY'RE REFUSING TO FIGHT THEY'RE WITH US§§§§" and people who've never been to a protest believe that shit. For all you know 20 minutes after that it might have turned into a complete shitshow.

To be fair they are also frogs, waving the white flag is in their genes

What do they mean by this?
First's one a fake

I'd say it's the same for the other two, it seems like a lot of work for nothing and they look like bad photoshops but I'm not positive

Edit : I've found better quality versions and they actually look real. So yeah they're guillotines, the devices France used for capital punishment until it was abolished in the 70s (80s ? not sure), you'll see them sometimes as anti-goverment symbols, essentially because that's how the king Louis XVI died, not sure if that was your question ?

It's going to be interesting to see what side of the political aisle will capitalize on the unrest, but either way, and sorry for the overused joke, the Trump curse claims another

For some perspective this works out to around $6.53 a gallon in freedom bucks. In the US the current average for a gallon of diesel is $2.69.
Does anyone know what the total fuel tax in France is? I know Germany is close to $6/gal for diesel in tax alone.

But we never did something as asinine as blame Washington for it and block roads... it's the highly ingrained socialist expectations of the average Frenchman that's to blame here, and it's only going to get worse as these people age into the brackets that were supposed to be taxed to pay for all the gibs without actual jobs or a desire to pay in who think inconveniencing people actually tryig to work will solve it.
If the federal fuel tax went up 30¢ tomorrow, I would have no problem blaming Washington. First people to loose their collective shit would be truckers and farmers. Farmers being the largest single income lobby in the US is probably why no one wants to touch it. I guess I can see what you are saying, but fuel taxes disproportionately effect lower income brackets and don't really discourage driving among the same group.

afaik there's never been an airforce coup, chairforce confirmed for lazy cunts
The main continent of the Turkish military coup in 2016 was the airforce, they just didn't have the balls to shoot Erdogan's plane out the sky. The moment Erdogan landed and rallied the people, it was lost.

Wasn't that coup literally a false flag, in the original Reichstag Fire sense? Erdogan sure didn't hesitate to purge opponents and fiddle with the constitution after it.
