To answer some questions with knowledge of what happens in a "normal" instance:
The therapy Chris went to was NOT to determine if he's ok or if he needs a therapist or anything. It was actually an evaluation. They were just determining if he was mentally fit enough for trial and if he was 'safe' for the population's safety. That's it.
Getting out of community service isn't hard. Especially when you're someone like Barb; in Chris's case, all he or Barb would have had to say is that Barb needs Chris because of her 'conditions' and that she can't drive or function or whatever with out him. They'd have viewed his service to Barb as a way to stay out of trouble (yeah right) and as a way to pay back society... kinda. Like I said, it's not hard to get out of community service, Chris and Barb probably avoided it together.
