Bob enabled Chris just as much as Barb has. Barb just lived longer.

Edit: What is with this weird romanticizing about Bob's parenting abilities? His son got banned from a dumb game shop and Bob blamed it on an internet conspiracy.

Blarms was all Chris. (Though he didn't conceive of it. Apparently it was a point of contention among Sonic spergs in general.)

They were having random people call the house and shout Julay.

Never in a million years would Bob have conceived of the idea that random nerds across the world are responsible for the harassment. What could possibly be so interesting about Chris that would prompt that? Nah, it was much, much more likely to be local teenagers. Bob can at least remember back when he was in high school and the stupid shit he probably got into back then.

Ignorance can still enable, which Bob did. Having "Julay!" shouted at you by randos doesn't excuse it because the enabling began long before that.

Was B0b as manipulative as Barb? No. Was he really any better of a parent? No.

Not saying he didn't enable, just that it was nothing compared to Barb. Chris needed some degree of "enabling", the rules are kinda fluid when you have a special needs kid. Bob at least tried to keep Chris in line.

Now as far as how Bob handled trolls? That shit was literally unprecedented at the time. To like, the history of the Internet. Nobody had fucked with people like that other than celebrities up until that point. Chris is kind of a patient zero for the lolcow game and we kinda take that fact for granted now. I don't how a 70 something year old man is expected to handle an organized group of dozens(hundreds?) of strangers suddenly fucking with his kid.

Not in any meaningful way, no. Enabling usually requires intent, or at least extreme neglect. Neither of which we had in this situation.

I don't know man, Bob seemed like a good dude to me and I feel like there's enough documentation to back that up. I can't fault the guy for not making every right move. I'm a nature over nurture believer and I think Chris was just made to be a stubborn asshole.

I'm a firm believer of nurture over nature. Chris naturally has tendencies, yes, but I feel with better parenting (even with the same shit genes), he wouldn't be nearly the cow he is today. He could've even been normal.
