Popeye's 90th Anniversary Web Series

Atleast the pink pather hasnt been fucked over right?
His last incarnation made him younger, but that was about it.

...This is the LAST thing I expected to be remade, given the outrage mentality behind his 21st-century reception.

"Oh! This show is aimed for the new generation!"

Oh, go fuck yourselves you sanctimonious Tumblr refugees, there are people who know EXACTLY why this was rebooted and that you knew how we'd react to it.
It doesn't help they can't even let these guys talk normally anymore as they want to impress people who don't understand English halfway across the word (or having to redub these into other languages for that matter).

Aside from the late-1970s/early-1980s Saturday morning cartoon, the Robin Williams movie, and the Nintendo arcade game,
Not to mention local stations sometimes having a "Popeye" show as well.

I also knew about Popeye as a kid because of the candy cigarettes which I believe are still being sold today but as "candy sticks" and they changed the format of the box to look less like a cigarette carton.

I remember those days, good times!

Okay, that new web series is cancer. It seriously looks like one of those disturbing "YouTube Kids" videos made by creepers. What the fuck.

Anywho, I loved Popeye as a kid. I remember when Cartoon Network used to show a lot of classic cartoons, and that's how I found out about Popeye.

Also, just putting this out there ... Years ago, Sony Animation Studios was going to make a Popeye movie. They canceled it ... For the Emoji Movie.

Here was the test footage they released. It looked so promising:

It's such a waste this never happened. You should see the pre-production drawings they had for this, all perfect!

So, in this new reboot, Bruto wants to steal the Spinach... but wasn't Popeye kind of made to make kids eat spinach, so if anything, he should be happy to share?

Either way, it's kind of dull and as people have been pointing out, there is no fun to be had watching this.
When you want to make a kids friendly cartoon, why do you pick a cartoon about a smoking, grumpy sailor that beats up people, if you want to change everything about his character? Isn't there like a bajillion other characters that are just as iconic that would fit way better?

How's about we make this thread about another shitty, badly animated reboot of an old cartoon as well?
When I saw that title card without reading the post, I thought this was something drawn by Doug Walker, it looks that bad. The video itself is even worse.
I mean, the scene where Woody uses the gun on the alien is outright sadistic. Cartoon violence is one thing, but that woodpecker is enjoying himself a little too much while he inflicts pain on others.
And all jokes are bad and uncreative.

That looks really cool, I am surprised. I would just love to have been a fly on the wall of the meeting where they decided to go with the Emoji movie over this.

The older Popeye cartoons from the 30s had adult humor in them that was appealing:

By the way one of the comments:

Is that true?
Interesting if they did alter the end like that. Still, that was a great cartoon all it's own, and one of those instances Popeye didn't do his thing!

I can understand not being able to be as fluid as it could be since its expensive and Popeye doesn't bring home the spinach like it used to, but with such hugely successful IPs under KFS like Cuphead and very capable animators at their disposal, you'd think they could at least apply a little effort to try and revitalize the Popeye IP after the assholes at Sony screwed Popeye and Genndy over. And if not decent animation, still images with a film filter like that Bendy short would at least get the job done on a budget while being a decent homage, and to make up for the shortcoming in animation, they could try and take the series in a new (technically old that not many are familiar with) direction like Genndy or the 1980 film tried to by going full purist and make it an adventure series that explores new ground that no Popeye cartoon ever did before, like the old comic strips where the old sailor got his start. I honestly wouldn't even mind these weak shorts if they were at least accompanied by a higher quality series.
