It wouldn't surprise me if he's so behind on all his bills that "double-paying" just means he paid off a chunk of old debt that he had no intention of paying yet, and he'll continue to be billed as normal (on top of his remaning debt) next month.
I'm thinking something like: $500 in debt to the power company (who won't just pull the plug on him if he's making payments), meant to pay $100 but accidentally paid $200.
Yeah, that's actually what would happen. If you overpay, it just goes towards bringing down the overall balance as opposed to counting as the following months payment, which is really what he should be doing: paying extra to bring down principal / not just a minimum payment which barely covers the interest. Only time that would be the case would be if you owed $200 and made that $200 payment twice. You'd have a -$200 balance / credit towards your next payment but, this is Dark, he's maxed to the gills on everything (which is why it's hysterical when he acts like if 'mah bills!!!' are a week late that it will 'wreck his credit, it's his debt to credit ratio that I'm sure has destroyed his credit long ago), so he certainly is not dealing with the latter situation.
