For a hot second he mattered and had "friends" with some fame so in the complete void that is his life that brief moment probably burns as bright as the sun. He can't turn to something else because there is nothing else and even if he did he would gravitate towards it again because there's just nothing else in that void.

I also don't think he understands how or why he got those friends, the circumstances, social interactions/circles, that kind of stuff, just like he doesn't understand how or why he lost them. That he ended up in CON can arguably be considered dumb luck on his part and it's unlikely that he will ever figure out how to repeat the process and get new super-friends. He doesn't have the tools to build meaningful social bonds with anyone and being friends with adults is a purely hypothetical concept that he, a man going on 40, doesn't really understand or have any experience in.

I think you've actually locked onto Jake's biggest flaw as a human being. He's like a hoarder in every aspect of his life. He can't move on from embarrassing game failures or having "his title" taken by another game, he will talk about that shit even if somehow he's 90 and in a nursing home someday.
