It's on the level of "why doesn't the heroin addict shoot up and get on with it." Chemically, mentally, emotionally, whatever the reason, troonery is that level to them. I'd agree that's why we're seeing more of it. But my personal opinion, based on just my own observations, makes me think it's a subset of the midlife crisis. Just instead of reclaiming their youth, they want to reclaim a youth they never had - which happens to be tied to a fetish they are unlikely to have been able to explore as they were living normally.

So there's this very small number of men who look at their life, wonder 'is that all there is?', but instead of the stereotypical midlife crisis actions, like the fast car or the younger girlfriend, decide that they should completely upend their life by being their own fetish object - as well as this urge to control normal women which seems to frequently go hand in hand with trooning out. And again, privacy of their own home, etc. But part of it is this need to be recognised as beautiful, normal women by everyone. So like an early life crisis upon entering adult life.

Trans people just want to go in peace and not be hassled, and so gender neutral is fine. Ultimately I agree with you here, but I do think there's more to it than just a midlife crisis. AGP troonery is comorbid with other mental illnesses as well, further complicating where exactly these drives come from.

The infantilization aspect is a good idea; "becoming" a girl or woman allows the older man to relive a part of life with less stress and the younger can use "teehee I'm a girl take care of me" to shirk their responsibilities.

Another aspect I didn't mention earlier is the ubiquity and easy access of the internet and internet porn. I have little doubt that the young men who think they are women are immersed in frequent porn use and sublimate the drive they should be putting towards finding a boyfriend-free girl into becoming the girl they want. Whether the frequent porn use melts their mind or the dopamine reenforces the ideas they had already is hard to say. Isn't the hysterectomy hormone problem only an issue if it's just a hysterectomy and not also an oophorectomy? Besides, trans men usually get it once they've been on T for a while because otherwise they're at a super high cancer risk, so I don't think they would have the same hormonal problems as a regular woman getting one.
