I gather that people on this thread and DSP's audience in general are about 50/50 split between two options:
  • DSP is lying about his financial situation so he can get maximum tardbucks for nothing
  • DSP is actually telling the truth and is really close to being bankrupt
I subscribe to the option that DSP is actually telling the truth. The reason I do this, and the reason why DSP is so interesting, is purely because if he is actually telling the truth we'll be witness to one of the first ecelebs experiencing actual bankruptcy. I'm sure there have been other bankrupt ecelebs, but everything we know of DSP suggests that his bankruptcy will be the most interesting because he's consistently pushed every income, credit and relationship stream to their absolute limits.

From what we can discern of DSP and his relationships, he literally has no one to fall back on. If his random autism generators rolls a bad set of die and a certain bill doesn't get paid on time (power, water or internet) its more than likely he's going to enter a final death spiral.

The part of DSP's story that is so interesting is that if he isn't lying, it means he's literally on the brink of being forced into selling his house and/or having his services disconnected. If his internet gets disconnected for, say a week, his income is actually going to diminish rapidly and will probably have noticeable consequences on his persona and also his current stream of money.

I've no doubt he's probably lied about finances in the past, but stuff like selling DVDs and tip goals making a frequent appearance would indicate things aren't going swimmingly for him right now.

Being that we know he has no one to fall back on (besides his parents, which is a topic on its own) if he actually hits rock bottom I'm guessing we're going to see some interesting kahntent, the likes of which have never been witnessed previously when it comes to ecelebs.

Worth not having to file one page of paperwork and pay $50. Effort and parting with money are two things he's going to avoid.

With his propensity to literally slander people it's only a matter of time before he costs somebody their job or something, gets sued for tens of thousands of dollars, and is ordered to sell his WA condo because the proceeds from the CT one won't pay the judgement.
Correct me if I'm wrong but even if he incorporated an LLC with Washington state it's Phil Burnell's actions that people would be suing for, not the actions of Burnell Productions LLC.

Phil said he sold a hundred DVDs. Did he take them to a pawn shop or what? A pawn shop probably would pay a dollar at most per DVD, and I would imagine the person working would have to physically open up every case to make sure the disc was actually there and not scratched up.

What other stores buy used DVD's?

Wouldn't Phil get more money if he pawned his "statues" or "pixel art"? Maybe one of his game consoles he never uses or his VR headset that he will never use again.

Why pawn a bunch of stuff when he's getting that emerald 7 money in a week?

Doesn't he have a sealed copy of Lion King he could sell?

Phil was asked how he's going to be able to afford to take Kat out on Valentine's Day (Italian restaurant, of course) and he literally said "Have you ever heard of a credit card???". This was moments after his begging spiel and him crying about how he's so broke. ACK ACK ACK
i think phil has a hard time understanding "the future"
he does shit now, future phil worries about it
no wonder why he feels gyped, past phil is a detractor that keeps fucking him over, nothing he could do.
that's why i agree with however said it a while ago, when mama and papa burnell croak and phil gets that money, he's going to spend it all in a week and end up with a ton of shit he can't pay for and no clue how it got that way.

He looks at his phone more than a teenager, maybe looking for a new drug dealer to help induldge his gout.

he might not say it,but im sure he still care about his stupid statues and would only be willing to sell them at high price, broken or not

Cliffs: Humans in general tend to perceive their "future self" as a complete different person to their current self.
that is true, but people can anticipate the future and learn to do things like "save money and resources" so they aren't fucked in the future
people by the time they are adults understand they need to ration things, or make sacrifices now so they have things later
even if one can't comprehend "me later" it still understand "i give up something so someone else gets it" and can apply it across time

phil is like that episode of spongebob where patrick eats his chocolate bar immediately then freaks out when it's gone

he might not say it,but im sure he still care about his stupid statues and would only be willing to sell them at high price, broken or not
i feel that phil only buys art for the sake of owning it, so increase his "big boy adult legacy" bragging rights
the statues would be the last thing he sells, and he will try to sell them at stupidly high prices because to him, they are a part of him being a mature and successful adult.

I guess one good thing about all this terrible weather is the snow monster dark ran across the country to get away from is back to finish off his back injury.
why the fuck did he need to drag kat along to just get the mail?
assuming she didn't just get the mail by herself and phil sat at home watching the windows

Nope because it's part of a legitimate business activity. Same reason talking heads on TV don't get sued daily for the stuff they say on network time.

I'm also on the "he's actually financially fucked" side, but with the added nuance that he exaggerates stuff. He obviously has a legacy of making things bigger/different than they are by applying his warped self-awareness and world views on things.

- DSP saying he's at risk of water/electricty getting cut off? Reality: he probably got an automated letter/email as one of many warnings to let him know that they couldn't draw money from his bank account because it is/was overdrawn => normal person-o-vision: you don't get cut off that easily.
- DSP saying his parents are sick and dying? => reality: they probably have some minor complaints people tend to get => normal person-o-vision: they're getting older, it happens.
- DSP saying every streamer who's playing some kind of hyped game on release day are getting paid by the devs/publisher to do so? => reality: 95% of the streamers are playing it because of the hype, not because they're getting paid for it directly => normal person-o-vision: most streamers don't do this full-time/for a living, so a hype is the best thing that can happen to them.

Etc. etc.

What cracks me up the most about this guy is how the one solution to all of his problems is the one he refuses to acknowledge, and that is to simply get better at his job. That's it, Phil. Get better at your job. He is hemorrhaging viewership because he sucks at what he does. Of course, he would never accept that but at the end of the day that is all there is to it. He has to beg like a pauper because he sucks at his job.

Now, I don't mean playing video games poorly - that itself has entertainment value in the hands of someone self aware enough to use it to their advantage. I am talking about staying flexible and adapting to new trends, and experimenting with approaches to how best to entertain his audience. We all know he is a lazy sack of crap who would sooner let his ham hocks rot off then move an inch for his "fans" and if given the opportunity, I am sure many other people could turn Phil's shitshow into something at least watchable.

But that's the issue isn't it? Phil is not entertaining. His callow insulation and muddled pawing at yesteryear's successes have incased him a sweaty gout filled sausage of boring doldrum. That is his worst offense, the tell that he is terrible at this whole live streaming video game entertainment thing - he's fucking boring. All of the good entertainment comes from his kneejerk reactions to things influenced by external forces (too many to be listed here). He himself is not fun to watch. A pissy grump with a sour puss on his face constantly bitching to idiots about his self inflicted money troubles is not fun.

And all he'd have to do is try. Just try anything at this point. Try making videos, try engaging the chat more like a human and less like human resources, do whacky challenges, stand on your head, dance for nickels - ANYTHING. Try and adapt and listen and the audience would grow, and the money would come in, and he'd actually be fun to watch without all of the drama attached to it.

I mean, I wouldn't watch it, he's gross.

Well, he was years late on capture cards in of itself... the massive ineptitude makes it a miracle he ever had any modicum of success

If we were to vote on Phil's biggest flaw lack of foresight would be my pick. It is responsible for so many of his problems. In his mind the way things are today are the way things always will be. He thought Machinima was going to pay him an absurd amount of money for a long time, possibly the rest of his life. Today he banks on let's plays always being popular in general and as a way to make his living. He was already slow to evolve from camcorder to capturing to live streaming, who knows what the next step will be he stubbornly refuses to accept. Twitch is also like 95% based on donations from the public, so when the people go so does your paycheck.

Even if these things have crossed Phil's mind it didn't seem to go further then that. There is no plan B, there never was, and there never will be.

I guess one good thing about all this terrible weather is the snow monster dark ran across the country to get away from is back to finish off his back injury.

If it's a 5 minute walk to his mailbox, I wonder if his gated community puts all the mailboxes together in one big structure at the gate. I've seen apartment complexes do that, and his "house" is actually a middle condo unit, so I'm adding this to list of things that suck about this dream home that he won't part with: bad internet, bad air conditioning, too expensive to heat the office in winter, the rooms are the wrong size for their function / the fap seat blocks the closet, everything's a half hour drive away, and can only throw out a McDonald's bag worth of trash a week.

1. There are stores that specialize in used goods, usually movies, video games and electronics. I haven't been to the local ones in about 5 years, but they exist. The thing is they usually have way more copies coming in, than going out. They eventually stop buying certain things.

2. They were probably his blu rays. He claimed to have left all his DVDs back east. He pawned them because Khat told him to. Just like he stopped eating fast food because Khat told him to. He's completely pussy whipped.

3. Yes he does, but he would never do it. To him, its an investment that can only go up in value every single year. He also probably doesn't know where it is. Buried in the nook or a box long forgotten.
