Not true.
The DNC secretly CHEERED Edwards having his political career nuked, by way of the Enquirer outing his affair. Edwards made a lot of enemies in 2007, pulling a Bernie Sanders and derailing Hillarys' coronation by challenging her in the primary AND explicitly bringing up Hillary's greatest non-adultery humiliation (her failed health care reform) as the central platform for his presidential platform.
Edwards running was the thing that made Obama also run (as it showed that the masses would take an alternative to Hillary if it was offered, as opposed to Hillary being the only option). And more importantly, once Edward's campaign got sunk by the scandal, Obama swooped in and stole Edward's entire "health care reform" platform and Edward's entire base of support.
The hate by the DNC for the NE is more basic:
1. Editorial and ownership are conservative/Republican
2. Stuff like the John Edwards affair scandal that they broke, make the actual "mainstream media" look super bad, and incompetent/in bed with the political elite.
Ironically, the integrity of the NE journalism-wise is directly due to their own Gawker moment in the early 80s. They got sued by actress Carol Burnett for a fake story about her being drunk and creating a major scene in public; they lost the lawsuit and it caused the owners/editors to pass down strict rules that the reporters were no longer allowed to make up/exaggerate stuff and started making their writes follow the rules of journalism down to the letter in order to prevent any future lawsuits.
