Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

I honestly do feel kind of bad for (some of) the people who fell for this. I saw on my Twitter feed two separate friends of mine who fell for this during the initial fallout and were tweeting about it in support of someone they genuinely thought was a victim of a hate crime. They're good people. Maybe a little annoying, but naive and very trusting. It's too late for the older left but I can't help but wonder if some of those younger on the left might grow to be more skeptical after getting burned enough times. Not now, after only one high profile bust, but after a few of them.

A great man once said: If you have an open mind, be careful, you don't know who will chuck their trash into it.

Waiting on that mugshot: not showing up yet.

I don’t know why we’ve strayed from critical thinking and being a bit skeptical to outright full support even when the story is clearly insane.

The problem with the “listen and believe” crowd is not just that they believe victims 100% it’s that they condemn people before any evidence comes out.

“I believe the rape victim, clearly the accused is guilty.” No that’s not how it fucking works, support the victim if you want but don’t jump to conclusions and keep your damn mouth shut.

Someone on Reddit just posted a pretty interesting theory:

There’s the rumor (that Fox denounced) that he was about to get written off the show so he must have tried to garner sympathy.

I have another theory that’s not really being talked about.

Months ago Jussie and all his siblings took on the project of helping save Bennet College, a historic all black girls college. They needed $5M to stay open, with the deadline February 1st: https://newsone.com/3841746/jussie-smollett-bennett-college/

Smollett brothers join fight to save HBCU Bennett College; (ONLY $1 million raised by Dec 30) https://thegrio.com/2018/12/30/jussie-smollett-jake-smollett-hbcu-bennett-college/

They were making headlines for $70K at the time: https://qcitymetro.com/2019/01/21/b...000-donation-as-february-deadline-approaches/

When the attack happened, Jan 29, they had millions to go and it was pretty much an accepted failure. Then the #standwithjussie hashtags happened, bringing in single donations of hundreds of thousands. https://www.newsobserver.com/news/local/article225312165.html

They ended up with over $8M in 2-3 days.

Anyone whose been in project brainstorm meetings know how they go. I can totally see one immature knuckleheaded PR scheme get out of hand. And guess what, it was WILDLY successful.

Of course, there's also the theory that this was all a setup to endorse that anti-lynching bill.

What others have said. They have the same federal resources and are extremely efficient at their jobs; back in the 80-90s it would probably take about a month to back trace something to a mailbox area, these days they can probably do it to a mailbox in a day. Another reason to fear postal inspectors is if you look at some penalties related to mail vs non mail crime. If you commit petit larceny (e.g steal <~$500) you are looking at a fine up to $1000 and/or up to 6 months in county jail (Missouri - first google result, it likely varies per state and personal record). Get caught stealing any mail and now you are looking at up to 5 years in federal pound me in the arse prison and/or up to $250,000 fine. This is why only complete fucking dumbarses ever fuck around with anything mail related.
They had no problem tracing all the mailboxes the unabomer used with the weak technology back then. He just didn't make any mistakes that they could get through without the world as it is now. The don't ever not catch Florida Man when he sends anthrax letters now. It's amazing.

The Secret Service, who are almost as good, have a library of jars of pretty much every ink created anywhere since the Treasury started creating documents to help track down counterfeiters. The resources the US has put into fucking with people crossing certain lines is incredible.

The problem is that the rallying cry is "Listen and Believe", instead of "Trust but Verify". One of those phrases actually leaves room for the possibility that whatever sob story you're listening to is bullshit, the other doesn't.

Well, it's at least paints him in a better light than the current theory of "he did it because he's a self aggrandizing POS who wanted asspats and victim points", which is why it's almost certainly not true.

That one's also almost certainly bunk. That bill got through the senate unanimously (the 2019, deadlocked, partisan in and outfight shithole senate), it doesn't need extra help to pass.

Jesus, there really are people crazy enough to believe that faking a hate crime is a good thing. I'm sure future victims are gonna appreciate being looked at with a raised eyebrow because of this stunt

I really don't understand the mental gymnastics you'd need to perform to come up with a response like that, and I really don't want to.

If not enough real ones happen there aren't enough victims to feed the narrative. Fake ones are just as good when the media is in on it.

Already I've seen some excitable motherfuckers ready to pull out his name to call Majid Nawaaz's attack into question. (Even though this attack had actual witnesses and was caught on CCTV sooo...)
