I'm trying to get myself into the mindset of someone who can look at the MCU and think that RDJ, Chris Evans, and Chris Hemsworth are simply replacable cogs in the machine. It's not working.

I'll try eating more paint chips and get back to you in an hour.
That cat lady is referring to comics and Comics have had 3 consecutive years of lowering sales in an up economy with plenty of jobs at the peak of interest in superhero movies. I wonder how that could have happened.... oh right:

I had an interesting conversation with a Carol Danvers fan when I went to the comic shop a couple hours ago. Interesting in that it was completely civil and that we found some common ground on the character, because here is the thing: Carol is not a bad character. She has a 50+ year history and went through some harrowing ordeals: the infamous "Rape of Ms. Marvel," having her memories and powers stolen by Rogue, and her own battles with alcoholism. Yet she prevailed over her struggles and she was popular enough for the late-2000s Ms. Marvel title to outsell Wonder Woman at the time. Hell, I remarked that Marvel should have handled her the mantle of Captain Marvel earlier because of her history with Mar-Vell and record as a superhero.

Captain Marvel could very well be an entertaining capeshit/space opera film and the problem does not seem to be so much with the product itself, but rather the polarizing politics surrounding it. I know of the adage, "any publicity is good publicity." However, when Marvel Studios begins to dabble in identity politics, it is something that can easily backfire. For all the talk about inclusivity and diversity, identity politics is inherently divisive because its modus operandi is to separate groups and pit them against each other.

Does anyone believe that Captain Marvel would be as controversial if Brie Larson did not open say that she, "wasn't interested in hearing from some forty-year-old white guy about what didn't work for them in A Wrinkle in Time?" Then the usual suspects in the entertainment join the choir in telling white males that the movie is, "not for them." Excuse me? Do they not know that the key to success in film is to get asses into seats? One could say that the target audience is geared more to females, but there is something in it for everyone. You liked Thor: Ragnarok and Guardians of the Galaxy? Then you will like this. Are you a 90s kid looking for a nostalgia trip? Brother/sister--boy/girl, have we got a film for you!

There is a precedent for how damaging identity politics can be to a film: Ghostbusters 2016. Paul Feig and Sony tried to force a reboot the fandom did not want down their throats and used the all-female cast as a shield like cowards. Yes, there were trolls. This is the goddamn Internet. However, deflecting criticism with accusations of misogyny and demonizing the entire fanbase because of a few bad actors only alienates the audience and GB2016 will go down as one of the biggest failures in recent cinematic history because the fandoms are not obligated to spend their hard-earned money on a film they do not want to see.

Fuck, The Secret Life of Pets beat GB2016 in its second weekend. Let that sink in.

As for Captain Marvel--will identity politics damage its earnings? Hard to tell. 2019 has not been kind to cinema so far with Glass and The LEGO Movie 2 performing below expectations. That same malaise could affect CM the same way, but the recent publicity fuck-ups aren't helping. It is truly depressing when the polarizing politics is starting to infect popular culture with the current "Culture Wars." It becomes impossible to look at the work for what it is supposed to be: entertainment, and not a political statement.
The issue with Carol basically boils down to her being some big inspirational figure like Superman or Wonder Woman just goes against most of her characterization. She's a failed superhero with a headstrong personality who is a big time adrenaline addict and has emotional hang-ups about going nowhere in life, she keeps getting dragged out of the game for one reason or the other since becoming Ms. Marvel.

Not that all the changes the Captain Marvel era gave her are completely out of the blue, there's just no real transition period from 2000s Carol to her modern self. Her main motivation in the 2000s was seeing the reality of House of M, a world where she was a big name hero instead of a wash-up, and Captain Marvel could be seen as the logical progression if they bothered with a transition. The feminism angle was kinda in her 70s series but honestly she's at her best when she's not a symbol for anything. It's enough that she's a Major in the Air Force despite having a father who really disliked the idea of his only daughter being in the military instead of becoming a housewife.

I like Carol as a character and she's a woman who cracks skulls, it just doesn't jive to paint the character as some nurturing motherly saint of Feminism who dwarfs Captain America in charisma and leadership talent. Pretty sure they used to call her "The Woman Warrior".

That's the funny thing. RDJ gets paid the big bucks because he puts buts in seats. Same with Evan's and to a lesser extent, Thor.

The smart play would be to hand off the MCU to ScarJo. Even though ScarJo is a completely unlikable cunt off set, she can hide it very very well. She is also incredibly savvy, unlike Brie Larson who just seems like a cunt with no brain. No way would she have done the feminist thing either.

ScarJo has cross appeal, both men and women like her, shes been in the MCU a long time and if ScarJo killed Thanos I don't think you would get pushback because shes been there basically forever.

"BUT SHE HAS NO POWEURZ"

So? Make her like the MCUs Oracle and your cheaper Nick Fury. She has that romance aspect with Banner and shit to prove that shes not a monster in probably the best scene Age of Ultron had.

But nope, hand your franchise off to this unlikable cunt of a c-list hero. What the fuck are you doing Disney. JFC.

EDIT:

I always found Marvel unlikable because she was a no personality superman. She seemed to me to be like a cold blooded killer with all these powers and I was like idgaf.

My main memories of Carol are twofold: first, some of the old Ms. Marvel comics, which are the most generic 70s capeshit you could ever hope to read (although there, Ms. Marvel started out as a split personality, so that part was interesting at least) and as a supporting character in the X-books after Professor X stitched her mind back together after Rogue fried it. In none of those characterizations is she any kind of inspiring figure: she's strong, willful, and uncompromising, which can make for a great superhero but a terrible leader. Hell, at the end of the classic Brood storyline where she gets her Binary powers, she flies off in a rage at Professor X for agreeing to help Rogue, who was still suffering the deleterious effects of said brain frying. Even though Rogue was doing everything in her power to make things right, even betraying her mothers in the process, Carol still wanted to punish her for hurting her.

Brought into the current MCU, that character would make sense in more of a Wolverine role, the independent, kinda assholish one that they keep around because he's incredibly useful in a fight and has some, but not many, mentoring instincts. It's exactly the wrong person to put in charge.

Not sure if this is late but Tim Pool posted a video about Captain Marvel and her role in Endgame that showed some leaks behind the scenes. The leaks he got were from a Reddit user,

Apparently the script for Endgame had massive rewrites because the Russo brothers and the writers for Infinity War didn't want her in the movie because they wanted to ended with the original characters. However, Disney and Marvel forced them to include Captain Marvel in Infinity War, which the Russos refused. So Disney and Marvel agreed to the Russos that Captain Marvel didn't appear in Infinity War but had to be in Endgame.

Also, Endgame's budget apparently went up so they had to cut some of Brie Larson's action scenes out and replaced them with Captain America and Black Window in order to save costs. However, Larson threw a temper tantrum about it and Marvel filmed those scenes anyway.

Knowing Bob Iger, I highly doubt Disney would do this since Disney only cares about money more than politics. I'd believe this if Disney was run like LucasFilms.

So instead of watching a good movie, this likely pedo just stared at children. Yeah makes sense

I actually liked how fucking brutal she was before her "improvement", I doubt Disney will let something like this happen on screen tho:

Well if you are an ideologue, it isn't about what it is, it is about what is represents. I would call it the Barrack Obama idea. Just give something a smiling face that looks young and seems to make all the promises of a new and bright future, though when you strip the exterior back, you are left with something that is less than pleasing.

I honestly don't know how we became so low as a society where people seek validation from not their peers, family, loved ones, and others in their community, and instead of corporate products meant to boost the profits of a Mega-Corporation.

So here's how hard they want this to not fail; they are going to force it down your throat even harder than they tried with Ghostbusters 2016. They're going to, in their minds, leave you no other choice but to watch this tripe. What do I mean? Check your local movie theater listings. Notice anything towards the end of the week and continuing until next Monday?

Disney is making movie theaters across the country run only Captain Marvel for days. I stopped going to the movies a long ass time ago, but even so I can't recall something like this happening on such a large scale before.

Imagine being this desperate. Imagine running damage control so hard that you make a certain well known film website completely change so people can't talk about this one movie -- to the point where it made an app like Dissenter get a boost in publicity. Even Black Panther and Wonder Woman didn't get this sort of thing done for it.

LOL strawman everywhere. Literally almost nobody criticizes Wonder Woman and the criticism of Rey came to be AFTER the Force Awakens hit theaters, not before.

And, like, yeah, there are women out there who don't give a shit about these female characters, but funny how they're never taken into account by these people.

If anything, that dogshit movie was treated kindly precisely because people wanted to be "pro-woman".

The marketing is baffling. At this point they should putting Nick Fury and Phil Coulson front and center and branding it as a retro-90's romp reminiscent of Men in Black while downplaying Brie Larson. They would have been better off making it a SHIELD movie and having Captain Marvel as an afterthought.

So my local cinemas have updated their schedules, and Captain Marvel is still the only movie on there for a few days. Wtf, lol.

Supposedly Tuesdays are when they flesh out their schedules. Still unnerving to see nothing but Captain Marvel scheduled for an entire week. What a punishment for moviegoers!

Disney, I have American shekels that you will NEVER get. Short of pulling out all the stops and using the full power of DOG (Disney occupation government) to institute mandatory full price captain marvel screenings under punishment of summary execution, you will never receive a cent from me. Eid yensid, Eid. :unholy:

Checked five local theaters. Here's how many screens they are using for Captain Marvel.

1/9 screens
1/10 screens
2/10 screens
4.5/14 screens
1/16 screens (!!!!!!!!)

From what I can tell, theaters are not optimistic about Captain Marvel's performance. You can do the same count I did even without full schedules because each showing of Captain Marvel should be around three hours.

That's a fair assessment. People are ambivalent to Captain Marvel, but they absolutely hate that loathsome cunt Brie Larsen.

Its kind of like a reverse Guardians of the Galaxy. GotG was widely predicted to be Marvel's first flop because it was the first film in the MCU to feature d-list characters. GotG defied expectations on the backs of an amazing cast, a director with a unique vision, and a strong marketing campaign.

Captain Marvel, on the other hand, was expected to shatter box office records. They wanted to repeat Black Panther's success, so they're opening it on International Women's Day (lol) and really leaning into the fact that she is an a-list character and one of Marvel's most popular female heroes (double lol). The critical flaw in their plan is that they hired a racist, sexist nutjob to carry the film on her shoulders. Roseanne Barr would have an easier time selling her show to blacks than Brie Larsen would selling Captain Marvel to comic book fans.

Eric July is a great guy and he's constantly releasing commentary on Marvel comics. I should watch those.

I honestly don't know how we became so low as a society where people seek validation from not their peers, family, loved ones, and others in their community, and instead of corporate products meant to boost the profits of a Mega-Corporation.

I think it's from the time of fast internet where people isolate themselves more for the sake of instant gratification and idealized personalities at the expense of nuanced, real people. In short: fast internet caused more people to not go outside and socialize.
