Horrorcow Susan Schofield Cabana, Cory Cabana, & Michael Schofield / Schofield Productions / @bipolarnation - A Tragicomic Tale of Psychiatric Munchausen's by Proxy

I hope the kids are being taken care of well. The system can be pretty fucking awful to regular kids... just imagine how it is to speds. But, I am thrilled the kids are removed from that toxic environment. Susan and Cory needs to be charged and I hope that one of them tries to ressist arrest and gets tased by the police.

Though I wonder how Susan behaved the day they took the kids? I doubt she was calm.

Pretty clear that the Dr. Phil publicity was the tipping point. Millions of people saw Sophy call Susan out for abusing her kids; they couldn't let her just walk away and do nothing after that (and continue to taunt them online, which didn't help her any because she just can't fucking shut up). And they clearly saw the possibility Bodhi would die if they didn't do something. With Michael otherwise occupied, at least the kids can finally detox and someone who isn't Susan can figure out what treatment they actually need.

For the first time since this thread started, there's actually hope that things might get better for these kids. That's the best news of the week.

I don't have any personal involvement with the Schofields, but I do know that the Feds and State have a pattern of waiting for the perfect moment before they step in to help set things right. I can give my own example from a friend of mine from a fuck of a long time ago:

So ages, when I was in middle school and grasshoppers ran small businesses, I had a friend who was a bit awkward and silly, but he was a good kid and a lot of fun to hang out with. Loved fishing, loved video games, and I got along pretty well with him overall, and he'd been over to visit me quite a few times. Something about his behavior at school was always off, and a younger Jaimas really had no idea why. Then one day, I was over at his house, and his mom was the nicest woman you've ever met.

But then I met his dad, and holy shit, this dad.

Kiwis, I swear to god, I don't scare easy, but something about this dude made my blood run cold, like this pervasive sense of wrongness clung to him. He was polite and everything, but just being in the same room with the guy made me feel like I was in danger, and I went out of my way to make sure I spent as little time as humanly possible in his presence. The guy was well-known in his area as a pillar of the community, on the neighborhood watch, active in his synagogue, all that kind of thing. I had a good time hanging out with my friend, but I tell you, I was never so glad as I was to get the fuck out of that house as I was when mom picked me up.

As we were driving away, mom asked me: "Jaimas, did you notice anything strange about your friend's father?" And I said yes, that something about him scared the absolutely shit out of me. Turns out I wasn't alone. My mom was friends with this kid's mom, and my mom had met his father when she picked me up. She likewise felt there was something deeply, impossibly wrong with that household, and she beseeched me to have my friend visit us from now on. I readily agreed.

A few months pass, and my friend just inexplicably disappears from school. No explanation, no elaboration, just gone. A few days later, I got a phone call from him, and he said it was probably going to be the last time he was ever able to contact me, and that he wanted to thank me for being a good friend. I barely had time to ask him what was going on before he had to go, but my mom, who was in contact with his mom, knew, and told me the details:

His dad was a fucking abusive psychopath who ruled that household through fear and intimidation. His wife and kids were fucking terrified of the guy and he had enough influence to make sure he could keep a pretty good eye on them at all times. On multiple occasions he made clear that if the wife ever attempted to leave or the kids ever attempted to take off, he would kill every single one of them, and according to what my mom had been told, that's a threat he may have carried out previously.

According to mom, for almost four years, my friend's mom was in touch with the FBI, working on an exit strategy, but he almost never would leave the house for long. A few hours here or there at the most, and he'd keep constant tabs on them. At some point or another, he had to leave town on a business trip, and that's when the plan went into action. The FBI got the family out of there and into hiding elsewhere, and the dad was met with an investigation when he got back.

The short version is that an exit strategy like this may have been months or even years in the making waiting for the perfect opportunity to be sprung, and props on the state for finally doing what had to be done.

Personally, I'm awaiting @MirnaMinkoff and @multiverse's takes on this.

I’m actually very impressed at how carefully engineered this all was. From getting them on Dr Phil to get all the medical records released to then waiting until the day of a scheduled C-section to remove this kids. DCFS performed a surgical strike to save these kids and finally got it right.

Michael needs to stay put in Minn and help his wife and care for new baby. The kids need to be under supervised med withdrawal and professionals who understand the behavioral problems their upbringing has caused. Mike can’t provide the care they need right now.

The kids are probably happy. It’s always been stated they loved “going inpatient” so now they get to enjoy that sense of security and normality 24/7, no more chaos, no more manic mother, no more chemical lobotomy. They finally have chance to see what life is like without constant chaos, abuse and a chemical straight jacket imprisoning them.

Long term Mike would need to prove he actually understands Susan and he were sick and abusing the kids. Bodhi’s possible autism aside, Jani was never schizophrenic, any issues she had were due to her home environment. Mike was complicit in the abuse for many years. DCFS was smart to ensure neither parent can interfere in the child’s lives for the time being because they’ve both demonstrated their capacity for abuse and inability to understand what is abuse and what normal childhood behaviors are.

I have some hope that Mike being away from Susan, in therapy and living in a more normal relationship with a healthy step-daughter might provide him insight into how abusive he and Susan were to the kids but Mike will need to prove that change to DCFS. He was complicit in child abuse for twelve years, it doesn’t matter if it was simply misguided ignorance or calculated - the result is the same.

I’m fucking thrilled the kids are out of Susan and Cory’s clutches and I hope DCFS got all her welfare abuse bucks immediately stopped. The kids are in the best place they could possibly be right now and I hope it stays that way.

They will now get to determine how badly the lifetime of toxic over medicating has damaged their brains. I hope it’s not as bad as we have all feared. In a better world Jani would have been preparing for her SATs right now.

This says that the parent retains the right to make health care decisions for the children and to attend doctors’ appointments. I really hope that given the circumstances, they’ve made it so that this somehow doesn’t apply to Screechy.
As someone not involved, not a professional or even very internet educated about the subject I'm gonna guess fuck no, that absolutely does not apply to screech right now.

This is awesome news and its quite sad to have to celebrate children being removed. It makes sense that Michael would be unable to get there, getting a flight that fast is probably not an easy thing. Having worked with foster kids and their parents these kids would need a specialist foster carer and that is not easy thing to do without notice. And it really is possible that the foster carer saw the children needed more help then they could give. It is good they are in a 24/7 place that is detoxing them instead of immediatey whisked away and the time period of testing makes sense. Those tests will not only give a baseline but also show medically the situation they are in right now.

It is odd though that they are silent, surprised shes not demanding attention over this.

As someone not involved, not a professional or even very internet educated about the subject I'm gonna guess fuck no, absolutely not.
I do not know CA's laws, but there are different care orders. A voluntary still gives that option, but this sounds like an emergency one that would change their rights temporarily and explains the fast court date because emergency ones are temporary until they go before a judge.

L'chaim, bitches! I never thought this day would come. Been lurking this thread for over a year, posting for months. Consistently horrified for this kids. What a way to wake up, damn. Jani and Bodhi are free... the only thing that could possibly make this better would be hearing of Susan's indefinite commitment :optimistic:

Long time lurker, first post. Hallelujah!! I woke up to this news and couldn't be more thrilled. Small Powerlevel: I have mental health experience both in my personal and professional life. I pray that J&B get the care they truly deserve and that they can live a better life from here on out. Keep up the fantastic work and keep this chica updated.

Is there really confirmation that Jani isn't schizophrenic? I mean christ Dr. Phil is of course a giant hack but I would think him and Oprah who both interviewed her have specialist researchers beforehand who made sure Jani was what she appeared to be.

As for Bodhi, being chemically sedated through the most pivotal years of development has surely left him permanently mentally retarded. His future is definitely in a nursing home, at least he'll have a chance to be treated with dignity.

Talk show hosts aren't really going to say that a doctor is wrong. She had already gotten her given the diagnosis and it is an ordeal to remove a diagnosis. The current situation though could warrant an entire reassessment, but even then they may just change the diagnosis to have the specifier that symptoms are not currently present.

Wait, the kids are being removed from Susan's "care"?

I think my concern is that Michael will be unable to care for them. It depends of course, optimistically, Bodhi off meds will be somewhat normal, but I'm not holding my breath. Jani would be a wonderful big sister, I think at her core she's a beautiful young lady, despite all of the problems she's had thrust upon her. Regardless of that, the reality is it'd cramp Michael and Amy's life having Jani and Bodhi there.

I hope Susan doesn't get them back. If Misty Henry can have her kids yanked away for less, then so should Susan. In a just world..... well, she'll be competing with Misty for best ceiling trash.

Slightly off-topic, but relevant to the abuse aspect of the thread:

It's interesting hearing someone else describe how they felt around a friend's abusive parent. It's difficult to describe, but you can really feel the presence of something horribly wrong. Like the weight of their abuse hangs in the air around the family even when things are normal and peaceful. It follows them around, and makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. I also remember it well and wanted to stay the fuck away from that friend's parent.

Unfortunately, there was no happy ending to this situation. The father got to keep abusing his son (AFAIK, it was some physical and intense mental abuse) and his son's life was pretty well fucked up by it.

I must admit that my opinion has changed from the off the cuff one earlier. DCFS does seem to know what they're doing somewhat and 24/7 care, tests and getting off these meds will be good for the kids, no doubt.

However, I don't agree with others who think that this process will go somewhat painlessly for the kids, especially for Bodhi. Getting separated from their mother, no matter how abusive she was, must be a traumatic experience. Think about it, all the kids have ever known has been this life with Susan and of course a huge amount of drugs. All of this has been taken away(or will be if the meds are decreased slowly) Coming off all of these meds must suck really bad. So yeah, changes this drastic must suck really bad in the short term, but it will hopefully get better.

I guess we'll see what happens in the future, but at least Bodhi will get to live now and hopefully Jani can live at least a somewhat normal life.
