It's a long story and it's been some time since I've gone over the details but basically the British gave away Buddhist ancestral land in Arakan to the Bengali imports that the British brought to the area. The loss of ancestral land pissed off the Buddhists and started a shitshow where there was relative harmony before, causing some Buddhists to ape out on the Bengalis and so creating a never-ending conflict. The Bengalis eventually reformed into a new group and called themselves Rohingya, bullshitted some history and made it seem like that they've been in Arakan for thousands of years rather than less than four-hundred or even three-hundred or so years (like I said, details are spotty).

Other relevant details include 969 movement which is kind of an anti-Islam Buddhist supremacist group; the British giving the Muslims guns do much for peace either when they turned it on the Buddhists rather than the Japanese (it was in WW2 and the British thought that they might make for good warriors against the Imperial army); and the history of post-WW2 state persecution of Muslims.

tl;dr: It wasn't really the fault of the Muslims in Myanmar that they were in heavy conflict with the Buddhists.

The thing is, even if that seems disconnected from what happened, what traveling abroad does it show you how interesting foreign cultures are and how blending everyone together into some mixed society doesn't actually create diversity. Diversity is going to Vietnam and riding on a scooter to a woman's restaurant that's been open since the communists took over and having Pho made in a traditional way with real organ meat in it. Diversity is not going to the corner store and having Pho delivered in a plastic bucket by a guy from Myanmar that you can't even distinguish from Vietnamese and who made the Pho by mixing together powders like an alchemist.

When you really see what oversea food and culture is like in the places it came from, you realize what a pathetic knockoff Americanized versions are. No one in General Tso's family even knows where General Tso's Chicken came from.
