The electoral college as we know was the product of a series of compromises to get the slave states to actually stay with the Union. Just for clarity: States get a base allocation of seats and then its down to population.
The south supported the electoral college because of the 3/5ths compromise that would guarantee them a "fair" share of the electoral seats. Slaves were counted towards the amount of representation a state would get as 3/5th a person and the USA only got that because northerners had haggled hard with the southerners. The great fear was that the south would be dominated by a government without representation like had happened under Britain so it was critical that the south felt it was equally represented.
The French still cockblocked the USA from spreading west when the compromise was made in 1787 so the south found the system acceptable instead of viewing it as an anvil tied to a string.
Western expansion and the electoral college caused the Civil War and end of slavery. The western states were not going to be slave states and it was obvious just looking at the map. Lincoln won his election because of a set of "exceptional" circumstances but what was happening was obvious. Southern gentlemen weren't going to dominate the country anymore no matter what happened and they reacted by throwing a fit.

The electoral college wasn't made to preserve slavery, it was made to preserve the Union. Prior to 1861 the USA barely had an army. In 1861 the northern armies matched the south man for man despite more than half a century of taking in an insane number of immigrants. In 1787, a civil war would have been unwise as the numbers were much closer, Britain was breathing down their back and the federal government was weak as shit. The south had to have equal representation and this was the way.
People who make this argument are also people who argue that states rights is racist, ignoring stuff like the northern states using their militias to oppose the fugitive slave act.
