Weeb Wars / AnimeGate / #KickVic / #IStandWithVic / #vickicksback - General Discussion Thread

This thread already has a problem where things that start out as clearly-labeled conjecture gets repeated enough that people start thinking it's fact. If Hanleia wasn't someone whose signature request got rejected, then we need to know that and stop echoing it.
That's a really good point, I wasn't saying it happened, I'm just explaining its not surprising why people are assuming it. But alot of people do like echoing guesses and theories as fact and it does get a little annoying to try and combat that, you are 100% right there

So, while there's a lull, I have a question: Despite being an anime fan for about four decades, I've never actually watched much of DB before.

Can you just start at episode 1 of the original 1986 series? I don't have an issue with 80s anime. I actually kinda like it a bit better in some ways than the modern stuff.

You technically don't need to watch Dragon Ball to follow Dragon Ball Z. The most recent dubbings of DBZ (the full series and Kai) open with a recap of DB and the non-Kai version does a lot of extended flashback sequences whenever they do callbacks to DB. And Dragon Ball Z starts off with a new viewer/reader jump on point, with Gohan (at least until the Cell/Android Saga) as the main character and he gets introduced at the start of DBZ.

That said, Dragon Ball is radically different from Dragon Ball Z (DB is more comedy driven, whereas DBZ is 100% action driven) and has it's own charm especially with regards to having tighter continuity and more grounded scope and scale, especially with bad guys. And you can see clearly where Akira Toriyama had an explicit vision of the show and franchise in it's early years and how he pulled massive retcons, when Goku became an adult/Gohan got introduced, to radically retool the franchise into what it became*. It's worth watching for a deeper appreciation of the lore and all, along with for it's own sake. But it's not 100% required for following Dragon Ball Z.

*Goku was originally human and Piccolo the devil and Kami being God. When the Saiyan arc started however, Goku was retconned alien as was Piccolo and Kami; the later of which was done super-haphazardly given the build-up given to them in Dragon Ball.

Searched for docs again today, but nothing. But I don't think restraining orders would show, but maybe those are in?

I hope he is ready for the danger-haired horde.
I'd honestly give a movie with Vic in a lead role a shot. He did good in Star Trek Continues, though I have to admit it didn't completely hook me since I'm not a Trekky. But a noir film sounds like it could be legit.

I have to admit, I kind of want to hear from ALOD again. If they have half of Ty's simmering rage it would be a good show.

Also thinking about it, BHBH likes their nicknames, both internally and for targets of research. They're almost like Filipinos.

Partially my fault, since the first paragraph of the OP used to say HanLeia was the Fujoshi who asked for the yaoi art to be signed. After she disavowed that it was changed to more broadly reflect that it was a rando Fujoshi who got mad about it and started the whisper campaign that HanLeia participated in. Its not really that important as its just background filler, but it is important for us to be as accurate as possible considering how high profile this is. In that respect this autistic basket weaving forum is probably ahead of CNN. Might need to add a formal change/retracting to the OP on that front like a big boy newspaper.

Look at this hyping. In another universe. Nick is making 60-second commercials for chamois towels and adhesive tape.

Gonna miss tonight's show due to IRL stuff. But I'll catch up on it and the possible 35 new pages to this thread tomorrow, I guess. :D

Filipinos love giving nicknames.

See this is where the divisiveness comes into play... I disagree, but I'm more concerned with video fidelity than musical score.

I'm not a huge fan of the "pan and scan" process of Kai, but I think that cutting out all that filler and cleaning up the animation into HD 16:9 is worth losing the original score. But some will disagree. And both the original and the Kai version have questionable dubbed voice acting depending on version, so that just comes down to preference.
Ultimately it's the same show. There are just minor differences. Kai is supposed to be more "manga-faithful", but lots of people are nostalgic for the original and I can't blame them for that.

For a newcomer though? I can't recommend the original. I'd recommend that if they like the series, they should go back and watch the original later on. But if that lower animation quality isn't a deterrent (which is doesn't sound like it is in @Captain Manning 's case) then maybe it won't matter.

The problem with Kai (for me at least) is two-fold:

1. You lose a ton of Gohan/Piccolo character development if you cut out all of his filler in the Saiyan arc.

2. OG dub voice for Freeza (IE the one who had an evil grandmother who chain smoked), was way more interesting/fun than Kai, which went out of it's way to ape the original Japanese version of Freeza; who was a super polite, smug psychopath who fit with Toriyama's vision of Freeza as a Patrick Bateman-type real estate big wig, which Toriyama despised. OG Dub Freeza is a wonderfully snarky, mean spirited little shit but Kai/Super comes across as a try-hard Bateman type

Most hardcore Dragon Ball fans would argue Chris Ayres' performance (occasionally filled in Daman Mills because of Ayres' health issues) is the closest in any English to Freeza's personality in the manga. Personally, I have nothing bad to say about Linda Young (who still voices Fortuneteller Baba in Kai) and her performance as Freeza. So many fans remember her as such. That being said, I like Ayres' Freeza as well.

If you're watching Dragon Ball just start from the beginning. And watch it subbed and ignore tha horrible 90s Dub funimation put out. it's a shame (but funny at the same time) that Funimation had to be hit by this so badly.

Funimation actually redubbed the original first 13 episodes of Dragon Ball, in the early 00s. They cut a deal with Cartoon Network to acquire and air Dragon Ball inbetween seasons of Dragon Ball Z on Toonami and a more accurate (but still censored for TV) dub that took advantage of the show running on cable and not regular network TV. However, the first 13 episodes of Dragon Ball (plus the first 67 episodes, which was the first two US seasons, of Dragon Ball Z) never had an official US release for ages. Funimation had sold the video rights to another company and they got bought up by (IIRC) Lion's Gate and Lion's Gate kept renewing the DVD rights for nearly a decade. As such, the original uncut run of Dragon Ball on DVD skipped the first 13 episodes (which were still technically available as a bargin bin set using the 90s dub/butchered cut) until late 00s, when the rights finally expired and Funimation was finally able to release them uncut.

Also for a side note, Cartoon Network only aired Dragon Ball once. Some fans have wanted the current version of Toonami to try and secure the TV rights again for the show, since it's continued to gather some mystique given how it's been rarely viewed in the US. But supposedly, Toonami won't do it because A. it doesn't have a HD version of it and B. Funimation has generally refused to offer it up for syndication (even though they put Dragon Ball GT back on the air on Nickelodeon when Nick was airing Kai ages ago).

Look on the bright side, you can be one of the only users on here that has an autograph from a soon-to-be convict!

It's funny when the Weeb Wars started, I looked at some of the merch that Vic signed for me and thought "So, now I know what a Michael Jackson or Bill Corby fan feels like." I had not felt that level of grief since Chester Bennington committed suicide. as I watched more and more of this wretched tale unfold, I no longer wallow in that sadness. Instead, righteous indignation towards these snakes who had the intestinal fortitude, the gall, to call Vic their "friend" while the plotted to stab him in the back. Looking at how they and their supporters have conducted themselves only strengthens my positions.

For the last 2 months, all they have have been doing is lashing out at fans just like this:

So Josh Martin and Chris Rager are now on the DB voice actors making themselves look like damn fools club

They have been for a while. Especially, Martin. The dude is troll bait and certainly breaching the barrier of lolcowdom ( if he has not already).

At this point, Funimation probably deserves its own Lolcow thread. Voice actors involved with them can already make up a large majority of the content and other shit like the Escaflowne redub can be additional stuff.

No one expected a new Broly movie to be made decades after the character was introduced, but I'm willing to bet Toei has a memory of an elephant when it comes to contracts or has someone who looks into the cast. Whether Sabat wanted the role of Broly for himself or to give it away to someone else because his hate-boner was too much for him to handle, Toei was there to breathe down their necks and they had to get Vic back since he still had a contract with them.

even if there was no new Broly movie, the character became too popular he started to become a constant presence in the video games in an almost yearly basis since the Budokai days, and Vic was always coming back for those. And I'm almost sure it was Sabat who first got Vic to play Broly in the old movies since he's usually the one who call the shots in most of the Dragon Ball dubs.Pretty funny how he seemed to know about these stories for a long time but still kept calling Vic back for the DBZ games that have been coming out for the last 15 years, huh?
I'm sure the outrage against Sabat will be funny to watch the moment they show Broly Super in FighterZ with a new voice...

Was looking at the twitter thread for Nick's announcement. "You know what would ruin a weekend...getting served Papers at 4:59pm. " Oh, we can only hope.

We, sadly, don't even know if this is even Vic related, though it's more probable than not. Dunno, has anything happened with the Mark Waid case?
