Star Wars Griefing Thread (SPOILERS) - Safety off

Finn was a wasted opportunity for an audience surrogate since he AFAIK has lived his whole life as a stormtrooper and doesn't understand how normal society would work.

I just wanted to highlight and expand on this thought because it's incredible how badly the premise of the Finn character was wasted in implementation. The general concept of a character raised and indoctrinated by the bad guys to be one of their elite soldiers, who comes to realize that he is serving evil and makes the choice to reject them? That's potentially really compelling and it's something we'd never seen (onscreen) in Star Wars before. Does he struggle to overcome his lifetime of conditioning while seeing the galaxy through new eyes? Does he feel torn about fighting his former comrades, knowing that any one of them could have been him a short time ago?

But beyond his introduction scene, Finn does not act at all like you would naturally expect from his background. From the second he decides to leave, he's blowing away First Order troopers with no remorse. He cracks wise. He's a bumbling retard, bizarrely placed as the comic relief sidekick for Poe and then Rey in TFA. He's utterly unserious and totally incompetent. It almost feels like he was originally two completely different characters that were merged in a script revision.

Incidentally, the background given to Rey (hayseed orphan from a shithole planet with no formal education or training) would have worked a lot better as the clumsy buffoon of the duo.

Girls can't be buffoons you sexist pig!

All they had to do was make him a Teal'c ripoff, how hard could that have been?

And yet all of them in TLJ still are though there's no way it was intentional.

With all the talk of female characters, it makes me wonder why Disney hasn't jumped into the EU pool for more material.

I don't necessarily mind that they rendered the EU non-canon since keeping up with that continuity in the new movies would be a herculean task for any director, but there is room for compromise for sure by letting some of that material seep into the new canon.

Unfortunately, the only one they've really plucked out is Thrawn. Who I love to death, but there is so much more.

And going back to female characters, what about Mara Jade or Jaina Solo? Granted some of them were awful (Callista....ugh) but if you cherry pick the good ones and apply them to the new canon, you can get some good stuff there.

Heck they could have done that with villains too. Instead of just rehashing the Empire again (which to be fair, the EU took a long time to move past the Empire too) why not bring in Black Sun or some other criminal organization? Granted, Xizor seemed to work best when interacting with Vader, but I would have been open to using him in Episode VII. And then there is the Yuzzhan Vong who would have been perfect as new enemies for the new trilogy.

You're right on villains. There are plenty that make great possibilities. Even if Kyle Katarn no longer stole the Death Star plans, they could easily work him back into the story with the main part of Dark Forces, battling General Mohc and his Dark Trooper project. Mohc makes an interesting villain because he's not in it for evil, he's in it for honor: he's a Clone Wars vet that became obsessed with personal glory in combat and opposed projects like the Death Star because of it.

I feel like they could have had an interesting perspective flip if they had kept the EU's Imperial remnant but depicted them as the scrappy, ill-equipped fighting force the the Rebels were. Maybe having an element of being "true believers" in the Empire, believing they're fighting to restore order, and maybe even having to take down a New Republic superweapon. Working the Mandalorians into it with an aged Boba Fett in half-digested armor would be cool, too. The idea from the EU that Fett was working for the Hutts in revenge for Jabba's downfall was a good concept.

Xizor I don't think would really work, since his main arc was about attempts to humiliate Vader in front of the Emperor, and unless you significantly developed his character, Steve Perry didn't make him a terribly deep villain. He's fine for Shadows of the Empire but take out Vader's search for Luke and he doesn't have much to do except seduce Leia. And Rey already has a creepy older dude lusting after her.

Kyle Katarn is the only man droids are afraid to call meatbag.

Does Disney realize that it would make profits for them for Star Wars?

Just don’t have Kathleen Kennedy fuck with the script and you’ll get the first legit great Disney Star Wars film.

Despite my best efforts I am curious as hell what Kennedy is going to be discussing at Star Wars Celebration in April. I think it is going to be her first public appearance since the Solo opening. I'm going to assume that if the Rian Johnson trilogy is NOT mentioned we can stick a fork in it. Alan Horn didn't mention it in an interview last month, though he specifically said only that the cinematic side is under discussion post Ep IX. Bob Iger didn't mention it in an interview last September.

Keeping quiet about it seems to be the best call to try and build 'hype' or simply prevent Disney from having to take a concrete stance on the trilogy.

I think it's currently on the backburner, and they're waiting to see how Episode IX's received to decide what to do.

If the movie succeeds, they'll probably greenlight it in some form, be it as big budget films or as a miniseries for their Netflix ripoff. Should the movie underperform due to TLJ's divisiveness, then the trilogy will likely be quietly cancelled and never be mentioned again.

Until IX, Disney is keeping quiet to prevent any preemptive losses to their stock.

I think Disney's saving Kenobi for a reboot of the franchise after IX inevitably underperforms and receives mediocre reviews. Think of it, it's the perfect way to get fans back in the theaters after the disaster that's been everything made after TFA (and quality wise the entire Disney era). They could gain back a lot of goodwill just by announcing it, assuming Star Wars has been laid to rest for a few years after IX.

That would be a nice way to kick things off if a reboot (to either pre-Disney canon or a new canon with all of the awful and woke Disney shit retconned) is announced, but the question is, would Disney's Lucasfilm even have the competency to do it right considering how horrible their storyteam is (which is mostly made up of Kennedy clones) and how mediocre their choices for storytellers are (which is mostly made up of Wendig-tier fagtrons)? If Disney's execs even stop being retardedly indifferent for two seconds and decide to step in to initiate a reboot, would they clean house at Lucasfilm to make sure the reboot goes right or leave it as is? The fact that they don't really care about how EA completely fucked over the SW videogame IP makes me suspect they really wouldn't go the extra mile to fix shit up. And then there's the fact that a reboot to me seems out of the picture since the only thing giving Disney any serious cash and appeal right now is Kylo Ren shit, which is pretty much their only worthwhile (yet still mediocre) creation. If they retcon him, I can see a lot of normalfags (even Disney critics like that Geeks&Gamers) lose their shit over it. And then there's there 2 billion dollar park. So the only way a reboot may happen is if IX bombs, Emo Ren loses popularity and the park ends up under-performing.

Also some like to bring up the Resistance cartoon as a success, but its ratings and reviews have been less than stellar and its not even as well known as the fucking Rebels cartoon, with most normalfags not even knowing it exists due to its awful and random scheduling.

What if IX is cancelled?

It’s finished filming, unless Disney pulls the retarded move of delaying it to like May 2020.

Disney is also having a new boss in 2021 when Bob Iger retires. So there’s that if IX and the park underperforms and the new boss has a way different agenda.
