Facebook megathread

Apple has shut down Facebook’s ability to distribute internal iOS apps, from early releases of the Facebook app to basic tools like a lunch menu. A person familiar with the situation tells The Verge that early versions of Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and other pre-release “dogfood” (beta) apps have stopped working, as have other employee apps, like one for transportation. Facebook is treating this as a critical problem internally, we’re told, as the affected apps simply don’t launch on employees’ phones anymore.

The shutdown comes in response to news that Facebook has been using Apple’s program for internal app distribution to track teenage customers with a “research” app.

That app, revealed yesterday by TechCrunch, was distributed outside of the App Store using Apple’s enterprise program, which allows developers to use special certificates to install more powerful apps onto iPhones. Those apps are only supposed to be used by a company’s employees, however, and Facebook had been distributing its tracking app to customers. Facebook later said it would shut down the app.

This poses a huge issue for Facebook. While Apple provides other tools a company can use to install apps internally, Apple’s enterprise program is the main solution for widely distributing internal apps and services. In an email, a Facebook spokesperson said “I can confirm that this affects our internal apps.”

In a statement given to Recode, Apple said that Facebook was in “clear breach of their agreement with Apple.” Any developer that breaches that agreement, Apple said, has their distribution certificates revoked, “which is what we did in this case to protect our users and their data.” Apple declined to comment on shutting down all of Facebook’s internal apps in an email to The Verge.

Revoking a certificate not only stops apps from being distributed on iOS, but it also stops apps from working. And because internal apps by the same organization or developer may be connected to a single certificate, it can lead to immense headaches like the one Facebook now finds itself in where a multitude of internal apps have been shut down.

Apple and Facebook have already been bickering over privacy, but this is the first instance of Apple taking an action that directly shuts down some of Facebook’s activities. Last March, Apple CEO Tim Cook criticized Facebook’s handling of the Cambridge Analytica data sharing scandal, saying, “I wouldn’t be in this situation” if he were running the company. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg later said the comments were “extremely glib” and spoke of Apple as a company that “work hard to charge you more.”

To answer this somewhat less flippantly, you're only sort of correct here. The current US system could be called Schrödinger's Free Association. For example, race is a protected class, and it is illegal to deny someone entry based on race... unless you're running the campus Black Student Union, in which case a-ok to restrict entry purely on the basis of race. It's illegal to deny someone service based on sex... unless you're operating a women-only spa, in which case it's a-ok to restrict service purely on the basis of sex. As of right now, it's perfectly acceptable to penalize whites and asians in college admissions (asians may change based on the outcome of the pending Harvard discrimination suit).

My preference would be for actual free association, but if that's not possible then I think the next best thing would be forcing businesses that serve the public to service the public without discrimination.

So a White Student Union would be legal? As would be a men-only spa?

Thank you Cosmos, very cool.

If my private company decides they don't want to host blacks or gays, how would that work out for me in the great United States of Freedomland? Oh, that's illegal? Okay, then I don't give a shit about what Facebook wants to host or not host, they can serve everyone without discriminating.
imagine being so stupid that you don't understand the difference between being born as a race or sexual orientation and choosing to have hateful ideals.

This has been covered before. Race, gender, and sexuality are protected classes but ideologies aren’t. This is because you can’t change your sex/race but ideology is a choice. A bar would get in trouble for throwing out a black guy for being black, but they can throw out someone wearing a MAGA hat. You may disagree with it, but the law says that ideologies (except for religion in many cases) are not a protected class.
I disagree with the sentiment of this post but also acknowledge that the argument you've presented is very tight and courtroom-ready. Technically correct is the best kind of correct:semperfidelis:

Didn't know being black or gay was an ideology :story:.
As much as I loath those self-important fart sniffing morons who lay claim to other people's accomplishments because of "muh race" I would've let them stayed not to support them but to laugh at those exceptional individuals.

Not a white student union, because someone would simply argue in a court venue that there is no standard definition of and therefore no such thing as the white race except as a discrimination vehicle.

Men's only spa could probably survive court challenges. If I recall, the Boy Scouts were never successfully challenged in court over gender segregation, they did it to themselves after the leadership got infiltrated by ideologues.

Good! Best case scenario; this contributes to the gradual death of Facebook. Hopefully Twitter follows. The internet was way better and more hip when it wasn't accessible to every drooling mongoloid with an Apple product.

Pretty sure men only spa exists, even actual spas not sauna covers for backroom sweaty buttsex.

Sex is what you’re assigned at birth and Cosmos clearly distinguished it from gender in her post.

Are you saying that gender is not something you're born with? Are you saying that sex reassignment surgery isn't a cure for people suffering from the ravages of gender dysphoria? That's a lot of hate to put out on display for the world to see, TERF.

It's almost like if you add in arbitrary criteria you can construct a framework where sometimes discrimination is okay and other times discrimination isn't.

I'm glad you think it's legal to discriminate against people on the basis of their ideology and encourage you to experiment with hanging a "no Muslims allowed" sign outside to test it.

More like a rules for thee, but not for me thing I could never see (normies or woke people) not particularly liking an all white group of something or all male considering the way females invaded boy scouts. Not to mention the double standard for blue hairs on twitter. They can say all white people should die all day long, but if you mention something slightly critical of "protected people" or question leftist dogma/countries people don't want you to criticize into the proverbial gulag you go.

apparently there is a standard of "black race" which in no way shape or form can be used to discriminate against individuals.

Anti-discrimination law is itself discriminatory, therefor... suck it up?
