Star Wars Griefing Thread (SPOILERS) - Safety off

Can't believe I only found this meme today.

The hate is still strong elsewhere.

It’ll struggle to get $1B as the toxicity of TLJ has yet to die down. It won’t even make a big profit for Disney.

The lack of promotion and hype is what is stoping it from being successful.
Revenge of the Sith almost made $100 million more than Attack of the Clones. Hardcore Star Wars fans will watch anything. Episode IX will most likely gross somewhere between the Force Awakens and the Last Jedi. The toxicity isn't dying down because two hardcore culture warrior groups have fixated on it and bring it up incessantly whenever they're trying to dunk on the other team.

Revenge of the Sith is much better regarded than AOTC by most people. I think ROTS is the only prequel I saw multiple times. Plus, Solo underperformed.

In hindsight, but not when we knew episode III was coming but hadn't seen anything of it yet, like where we are now. People absolutely thought George had lost the plot and that there was no way Episode III could be anything but a dumpster fire (which it was, tbh, but I guess enough people enjoyed the 30 minute lightsaber fight to disagree with me). Come this fall you will find yourself surprised how many people who disliked TLJ will still go see episode IX either because of attitudes like "I've seen the previous two, might as well get the conclusion", or rationalizing their interest as "I'm totally going to see how much of a disaster this movie is, can't wait"

You are right...as Plinkett said "at that point we all just wanted to get it over with."

And to be totally fair to AOTC had some segments that were salvageable...oretty much anything not involving Anakin and Padme. Then again where would our lives be without "I hate sand" as a meme?

But the biggest thing is the fanboy "this looks terrible, but I'm addicted to seeing/acquiring EVERYTHING so I have to see it/buy it". MST3K's Kevin Murphy had an elegant solution for this: take advantage of most theaters' lax security and pay for a ticket to a movie you'd like to support instead of blockbuster, do you get to support something more worthwhile :optimistic: while seeing what a shitshow a beloved franchise has become.

So I finally watched Solo - using Rifftrax.

Wow just...

Y'all remind me to sperg about it later if you want, but for now all I'll say is the only thing that keeps it from being the worst in the Disney era is that unlike Last Jedi it at least TRIED.

I sat back and had fun watching Solo. It's the only Disney Star Wars I can say I actually consistently enjoyed. I'm noy going to call it a great movie, but I had fun.

Doesn't seem right that Brian Daley and AC Crispin don't get any credit in it, because a lot of the backstory they created for Han was ripped off for the movie. That's kind of a microcosm of how I feel about Disney's handling of Star Wars, especially in creating "new" characters that are basically old-EU characters with a different coat of paint and a more woke attitude. They're ripping people off (in this case, two dead authors) and offering the work as their own.

I like to think Lawrence Kasdan is better than that but...

See also: The Captain Marvel thread.

Before release: "I'm never going to see this abomination!"
After release: "Ugh, my father dragged me to it against my will and I just had to see it a second time as part of my chronological rewatch of the entire MCU."

Upon watching this video, the main takeaway here is that Kevin Fiege has been successful since he had plan this out successfully and with Disney buying Marvel, they allow him to do whatever he has done but with their resources.

Meanwhile, they hire Kennedy who has had no real experience with the franchise.
