My point was that lots of white Catholics vote Democrat, and presumably being pro-immigration is not one of their big issues now that we're not getting half of Cork and Sicily over here every year.
I think another problem with the angry rust belters becoming Republican is that a lot of them will be Catholic, and that means the Republicans are gonna have to cool it with the extremely fringe Evangelical Protestant stuff.
They already kind of are, at least on the national level (now state-level politics in certain Bible Belt states is a different matter...)
Trump was the first time in decades a major Republican candidate did not run on a primarily Evangelical/Moral Majority platform.
Aside from picking Mike Pence as VP, Trump hadn't really campaigned on the Evangelical vote, while the candidates who did in the primaries were decimated (most notably Ted Cruz) as the Religious Right had lost a lot of its cultural and political power and relevance throughout the latter half of the 2000's, with SJW's replacing them as the new main force among the "Moral Guardians".
Aside from the powerless Pence, the only other Evangelical fundie types who held rank in Trump's administration were Steve Bannon and Jeff Sessions, both of whom are no longer in office.
Honestly, I get the feeling that Trump only picked Mike Pence as his VP to hedge his bets with what was left of the Evangelical vote (most of whom supported Cruz in the primaries) since Trump couldn't really play the moral angle by himself.
Honestly, I get the feeling a lot of white Catholics who used to vote Democrat will probably vote Republican again unless the DNC stops pandering to the SJW's and coastal elite types, especially in the Rust Belt states where the Religious Right is largely dead and irrelevant.
Now, in some of the hardcore Bible Belt states like Mississippi, Alabama, and South Carolina where the Evangelicals still dominate the state level, you'll probably see white Catholics still voting Democrat but those states are also solidly Republican strongholds.
