(Dunno if this has already been posted yet, but...)

From the same troglodyte person that made that Shantae redesign.

It’s pretty clear that most of these tumblr/twitter “artists” don’t understand anything about character design. I sure as ain’t gonna claim I’m an expert, but even as a layman I can look at that “redesign” and see many problems with it.

Slapping a bunch of boring shit on a character doesn’t make it better, it makes it worse. Realism does not make for a good cartoon character. The only good parts of Risky’s design that were kept were the bandana things and the skull bra, and they downplayed the skull bra while making the bandana ends gigantic, which looks especially fucking dumb on a design that’s supposed to look more “realistic”.
That logo looks really dumb, it’s supposed to be a skull wearing a bandana that’s all in the shape of an R, but it doesn’t look like an R or a skull. Why would you not just keep the skull and crossbones?
Eggplant Purple with Bright Magenta highlights on every piece of clothing just doesn’t look good, especially when it takes up 90% of the design because you decided to throw a big flat-color coat on her. Said coat covers up most of her skin, which pretty eliminates the blue-gray part of the original color scheme.

Don’t quit your day job.

You got this pretty spot on actually. The main problem with these redesigns is not only slapping on a bunch of useless shit, but making the character lose all their original personality. Yes, Risky wears a bra and so forth, but because it is hot. The person who said "sunburn" doesn't seem to understand getting heatstroke in a warm climate is even worse. Many people wear sunscreen to prevent that. And even then, Risky really doesn't care. She has a bunch of footmen who take care of her and listen to her every whim? Do you really think she would let them skimp out on taking care of her? No. Because if this person played the game Risky is bossy and is a villain. She's supposed to act like that because she is a bad guy.

I mentioned it like a year ago on this thread (I don't know if anyone saved it) but in reality people dress boringly. That isn't to say their aren't cultures that dress differently and extravagantly. But even in their cultures it would be considered the norm. The everyday American Joe isn't wearing tribal gear and a man thong. At most you're going to see a guy's chest while jogging. It's very rare you have people dress out of the ordinary. This is why whenever you do see someone with blue hair or a lot of tattoos it's considered a bit out of the norm.

The whole point. THE ENTIRE POINT of character design is to make an appealing character that will function within whatever setting they are in. No one wants to see randos in super bland clothing in a desert climate unless there is a possible reason or genre for it. You want to wear sweatpants and long-sleeved clothes in the Carribean? Have fun dying of heatstroke! The new Risky's design is not made from a place of earnest in my opinion. It's made because someone thought that having boobs was a bad thing.

The point I'm trying to make is that these people really don't seem to see a distinction between "having fun with a character design" and "This is creepy" or "This character actually fits on the setting and is memorable and fun" and "this character adds nothing to the plot and is pure fanaservice fodder."

"She shows off skin and that makes me uncomfortable!"
There are numerous people that don't want to look at a scantily clad woman but those same people would rather look at her than the manish redesign.

These people contradict themselves. Anyone can cosplay anything. It's a general rule to ignore those who give you shit for cosplay because really what are they going to do? Tell you no? Suck it up and ignore it. Just like all the black sailor moons do, and the disabled dvas do, and like all the Mexican Hatsune Mikus do. If people give you shit for cosplaying do it anyways. It's post like these that make me think these people are secretly insecure about themselves because really who are you going to convince with this picture to stop bullying others about their cosplay? No one.

People get really riled up over fictional characters. Especially at cons. You're always going to get that asshole who's way too much into it. The best you can do is just move on and live with it. Enjoy what you do because it's what you want to do.

Why did they make her a dragon? What does that have to do with anything? She's a ladybug-themed superhero... is this furry-related?

You know, I'm very impressed by the fact that they are able to keep the same line variation throughout. Not many people can do that. But at the same type it really kills part of the flow for each drawing. Because the lines are so thin and quick with the strokes, the original form is lost. In the last pic I could barely tell who each character was. I think making the lines thicker could possibly help them in the long run because it's so hard to see anything. The flat colors only make this work. Everyone kind of looks like blobs.

There's a reason why they recommend you use thick-to-thin lines. And many other artist avoid this problem usually making it up through coloring, but when you don't have that it looks very messy and unfinished. Or maybe you have thick bold lines and thin inner lines so the characters stand out (you risk them looking like stickers, but it's infinitely better than this).

The problem as mentioned before, with tumblr artists, is that the entire website is a vacuum space for super bad art or VERY good art. There is no in-between. It's very hard to get popular on the site without some sort of appeal. Many people in these woke crowds appeal to that mentality and it's super easy to get popular following those sets of rules. The more popular artists usually don't care so it's really just a whole cesspool of either SJW art, beginner art, and very good art. I really can't stress enough that while there are good tutorials by better artists on the site, it can EASILY get buried under awful artwork and people doing things that they think they're doing right, but really aren't. But the sad thing is that unless you're super woke, people will be so easily to discredit them.

For the brush thing here's what I mean:

1490097931191

I’m pretty sure that most of these tumblrites use Paint Tool Sai...and wether it’s because they don’t have a drawing tablet or have a lack of skill + noob decisions they’re opting to use the line and curve tools, which doesn't lend for line variations unless you go in and tweak the lines yourself.

[edit]

Why they make her a dragon? What does that have to do with anything? She's a ladybug-themed superhero... is this furry-related?

It’s for some dumb AU. They imply that she just has to be brown because that’s the dragon they HC her with.
There’s artistic license, but they could’ve used that artistic liscene to just make her resemble her canon counterpart.

Don't blame the program, blame the person using it. You can totally make personal work with Paint Tool Sai. You just need the knowledge to do it. The only reason why beginners use SAI to begin with is because of how easily accessible it is. It's not a bad program, you need to know your shit to make good work. Many times because SAI is so simple you have to focus on your skill to make quality art. Examples below:

Hyanna-Natsu, sasucchi95, yamio, kanekiru. All these artists use SAI and continue to use SAI to this day and are still able to produce quality art. Most of them only use a few modified brushes and that's pretty much it. The problem with a lot of these artists is that they really aren't taking advantage of the program they have. I can go into more specifics, but I figured I bring it up since someone mentioned it.

Slapping a bunch of boring shit on a character doesn’t make it better, it makes it worse. Realism does not make for a good cartoon character. They don't seem to understand that characters are supposed to be visually appealing and not realistic. It's the same as the whole "muh realistic womyn armor" schtick. Because fictional women's bodies are shameful, unless they're ugly as sin of course.

How come everytime you see the art vs artist thing the people who draw like this are incredibly fat, ugly, acts like a child, is a child, insecure, entitled, obnoxious, shitty personality, overly sensative, just does this for Social Justice points or a prude and I honestly feel bad for the ones who's trying to go to college or find a job drawing like this cause they never seem to improve but deteriorate instead.

I wasn't even blaming the program at all. You clearly didn't get my point.
I just noted that these beginner artists gravitate towards Sai and usually just default to using the line and curve vector tools as they are, which is fair cause it's easy to use, without really doing anything special with their linework. I was talking about their technique. I even mentioned "lack of skill".

I previously used Sai myself with great effect. The reason why I mentioned Sai specifically is because it just is what most beginner artists use, hell I've seen a pirated copy even being publicly shared in Tumblr and DeviantArt artists circles.
I've also used Sai enough to be familiar the types of textures in the program that they use in their art. I can also tell for the most part how they did their linework.

Aside from Sai these folks tend to use MediBang and FireAlpaca but I don't recall those programs having the vector tools that Sai has.

I wasn't trying to come off as abrasive. I get the point you're trying to make as I've used Sai in the past as well. If you ask me I don't think many beginners use the vector or line tool much at all. Most of this art has been shakey lines and incomplete circles so I can't even say they use that. Maybe for the more simple-shaped work, but for stuff like the above, I really doubt it.

Same. Used Sai for years now. Some of these artists could be using the line tool, but most of the time the form is so shakey I really can't say that's the case. As for Fire Alpaca it does not have a vector program but Medibang does apparently. Haven't used it but apparently that's what I looked up.

That being said, I think we can both agree that these artists aren't really using the program effectively. Even if they did use the line tool or curve tool their art can look better. I think beginners find SAI a bit more easy to get into but only because the interface is very user friendly. Things like Photoshop can honestly be a pain until you learn shortcuts (then it's piss easy) but other than that the fact is that no art program will ever be a cure for terminal wokeness.
