The thing that stuck out to me was the bit where John mulls over whether the doomed kids he gathered up were as "real" as their adult versions on Earth-C, but this thread is pretty much dropped with them all dying precisely because they're not as "real", without much fanfare.

I won't give spoilers, just a heads up. The "realness" of canonical (or otherwise) events and people is explored more in Candy.

John is my favorite character in all this. His development here is the same as in the non-canon snaps, and I like how he's portrayed coming to terms with his own depression and his alienation of his friends.

No spoilers but you may or may not really, really dislike the ending of Meat when you see what happens to John.

Wait... was John dumped and completely ignored by his friends by any chance?

And if I recall correctly, someone is mooching cash for the Transgender Law Center because of it.

No that's not it.
John doesn't get any resolution: he returns home with Terezi, and the second he returns to Earth-C and fucking dies. That's it. End of John's story. Forever. He doesn't meet any of his friends and they don't know that he's dead. All Terezi does afterwards is take John's corpse in Dad's wallet, and fucks off with Dirk and Rose to maybe revive him or be free of him/feelings of him through Ultimate Self fuckery? It's unclear.

This ending is made worse if you read the Candy ending right after and find out more about Terezi's feelings and what those mean in regards to the sex scene in Dad's car in Meat.

I got to that part and honestly really liked it. It addressed my earlier issue with the other kids getting straight up KO'd because they lacked the MC plot armor that John has, but then John fucking dies so it kinda evens out the score. In my opinion, John sort of coming to terms with who he is and then fucking dying is a fitting conclusion to his character arc in the epilogue - a depressed misfit doomed to never truly find peace on Earth-C.

Other members have brought this up but I'm pretty sure the infighting between Dirk and the Muse symbolizes the path that Homestuck itself went down throughout the years. Dirk represents Hussie, the old politically-incorrect Hussie that still exists in his soy-soaked shell, with his open jabs at how the woke showmanship is all fake anyways, and who always tries to steer the story in the direction he wants, while the Muse represents the meta-entity that is the fandom and the work itself, which wants to get woker with every iteration and intent on taking the story in their own desired direction. Dirk fucking off at the end of Meat after realizing that he's fighting a losing battle against the Muse symbolizes Hussie's desire to just leave Homestuck behind him forever and just let the franchise live on without his guiding hand, but it's implied that the Muse and the characters themselves will eventually track down Dirk (Hussie) and inevitably drag him back in.

What's interesting is that Dave is also a Hussie stand-in and he's super woke now. There's probably something to be made of the fact that Dirk more or less wants Dave to kill him. Dirk's suicidality in general is probably some sort meta Death of the Author thing (though of course HS already did this more directly).

I'm rooting for Dirk over Calliope tbh. She's invading the lives of the characters just as much, she's just fixated on the same shit as the fanbase (gender shit, detailed sex scenes, everyone dwelling in angst, etc) so readers are giving her a pass on it. Dirk's accusation that she's just some weird alien who doesn't understand how humans work and has no business directing their lives is pretty accurate.

So for reference here is one of the epilogue authors answering questions about who wrote what. Looks like it was his outline, but most of the actual prose was from cephiedvariable.

Andrew, I'm begging you: just write your own story.

Ever since the retcon I've been thinking that Hussie's (super woke, of course) inner circle of people he associates with IRL was taking more and more control of the story. Calliope is not just a fandom stand in, but she can be tied to a specific person, Shelby. If you want proof Hussie's not the only person with a say in the story the Gamzee and Terezi relationship was definitely due to her influence. I also think her favorite was Roxy and look at who Calliope ends up with. However I don't think Calliope is most accurately the fandom, or just one person, but a representation of the "inner circle" as a whole.

Dirk, representing Hussie, being dragged back into things stood out to me, since the entire epilogue was more of a sequel hook than it was something wrapping things up—especially with the afterword to Candy, which is of course the last thing in the whole epilogue unless you read Candy first for some reason.

Jade being a sex-addicted slut is kinda funny, and could logically follow from what little characterization she has in the webcomic proper (little human contact and poor social skills, bubbly exterior hiding deeper emotional turmoil).
She reminded me of one of these autistic Girls who try to compensate their social awkwardness with promiscuity (Our dear LagoonaBlue comes to mind!)

So Jade's a hermaphrodite now?

M A K U T A J U S T K I L L M E N O W .
I mean, more like a dickgirl.
No screenshots, you can find that in Candy if you really want.
  1. She said something in her body changed after merging with Bec. It wasn't her genes.
  2. It made her unable to get pregnant.
  3. When she mentioned they wanted to use Rose as a mother, she said neither Karkat nor Dave would be the father.
So that leaves me to think she's now a trap with a doggy knot.
The more fucked up the epilogue gets the more I like it, because now I can just have a good laugh instead of cringe. It's already reaching that point when something is so bad it's actually good.

Late thoughts about the epilogue.
  1. No, Jade was not supposed to be so part dog:

She was not even drawn with a tail the whole comic, but is mentioned to have one in the epilogues. Since Hussie has an habit of forgetting little details since he created the kickstarter, it's more likely he and his cronies forgot about how the design was created then bought the challenged being's headcannons.
  2. The gender stuff was really uncalled for, but manages to not be the worst thing inside the franchise. Rest in peace, Roxy's integrity.
  3. I already hated that Hussie did not write Hiveswap and the fact multiple people were involved in the epilogues is ridiculous. Homestuck was always an one-man army with artists, musicians and flash programmers just on its orbit.
  4. Dirk has always been a controlling, scheming asshole, that's literally 95% of his characterization, not sure why people are surprised this is being taken up to 11 after he literally gains omniscience.
Dirk's character arc, at least for me, was that he learns about his life as the Auto-responder and Dave's NOT abusive bro then do not follow their asshole paths. Hussie's brain, however, sees Vriska's head was cut off and wants another to grow. Epilogue Dirk is just Vriska.
  5. This 4/13 was barely more popular according to Google as last year, which had Friendsim Vol. 1 and the first Viz book released. Not sure if this was better or worse than expected.

22 is just a percentage compared to its peak (the kickstarter's release).
  6. Remember Hiveswap? Been more than a year and a half since Act 1 came out, and five months since the final Friendsim. Act 2 remains vaporwave.

Well, almost too many weeks later, I'm still alive.

I found the Epilogues to be a pretty good read, though they don't really feel like a conclusion to Homestuck, they're more like a conclusion of Homestuck's narrative style and themes of being "relevant" in a story as a character and such. Which is weird, because I'm pretty sure that people care more about the characters and their fates than any of that horseshit. That being said, it was still pretty interesting because I'm a sucker for that. People were pissed at first, and some are still outright denying things as canon--which is in their right, I suppose, since the entire story is about what "canon" means--but now I think things have settled down.

So, to clarify something, V is actually an artist called "ctset", that's why they're listed as one of the collaborators of the Epilogue alongside cephiedvariable. Ctset does fanart (and drew the SBAHJ book cover), Cephied wrote a shitton of Homestuck fanfiction back in the day. Hussie seems to have only wrote the prologues and nothing else, while those two worked on the Meat and Candy routes.

Also, the recent Homestuck Hullabaloo™ is that people are discovering the p r o b l e m a t i c nature of IPGD, specifically the fact that she wrote a 200k word fanfiction on Stridercest (that's Dave fucking his guardian Bro) called "Family Never Ends", which was actually a deconstruction on the nature of abusive family relationships, since she was abused herself. But as far as Homestuck Twitter is concerned, this obviously means that she's...I guess a pedo, or an incest supporter, or her work is cancelled, or some other fucking nonsense. I don't really know what they want out of this, it's not like any content for the series is being made by her. Oh, and finding her 4chan drawings didn't help their opinions either.

The above is IPGD's explanation. I don't call it an apology because she literally doesn't apologize, it's just saying that the people who are calling her out have absolutely zero understanding of what she wrote/didn't read it at all. Which is true, naturally.

Homestuck Twitter is also convinced that V is IPGD much like some of us thought in this thread, which as I just showed you is incorrect. Also, James Roach felt the need to confess that he was abused to soothe angry internet strangers:

The whole thing is a big fucking mess, and yet another wonderful example of how Homestuck was a mistake.

Also, ACT 2 NEWS/DEMO CONFIRMED???

TLDR: V is an artist called ctset who worked on the Epilogue, NOT IPGD, despite Homestuck Twitter thinking otherwise. They're mad at IPGD because of a fanfiction she wrote 7 years ago when she was a teenager. Also, Hiveswap Act 2 might have some form of news at an event called LudoNaraCon, as a DLC entry has popped up on Steam's database along with a tease from the official Homestuck twitter (and yes, that is the official one despite no verification and typing like a lobotomized trout)

Stand aside, gentlemen. I have your IV drip.

To clarify, I didn't back this either, but I've got I N S I D E S O U R C E S (read: suckers who backed this). Here's the copypaste:

So it’s been a while. There are a lot of reasons for our silence, and honestly it’s a whole tangle of stuff that maybe one day we’ll get into. But right now the good news is we’re in a stage of development where we can start sharing some things and are committed to talking with you more frequently.

ACT 2

We know you’re eager to find out something, anything, so let’s cut to the chase - yes, Act 2 is in active development. While we don’t want to start throwing out release dates until we’re a little further along, we’re happy to say that the script, art and design work is nearly complete, and programming is underway.

You might gather from the above description that Hiveswap development is a little unusual. Let’s just say we learned a lot of lessons during development of Act 1. For Act 2 we have built a staggered development process where the script and design come first, followed by the art. Then our programming team will put it all together while the writing, design and art teams move on to Act 3. Once we have all the Act 2 content and programming together, we will move into a play-testing and iteration phase before release.

This approach is working much better for us but one downside of this approach is that there isn’t much gameplay footage to show for most of the development. We can’t show you any gameplay yet but we would like to share a few snippets…

We will have more to share on Act 2 soon and we want to share it with you first. For our next update we’d like to invite you to submit questions about Act 2 via this google form and we will aim to answer as many of them as possible in the update.

LUDONARRACON

You may have seen that we will be attending LudoNarraCon this weekend, a digital convention for narrative games that is taking place on Steam from May 10-13. We will be “exhibiting” at the event and streaming on the Hiveswap Steam store page.

We do want to let you know in advance that we will not be sharing any further info on Act 2 during the stream beyond what we have posted above. Any new info on Act 2 will be delivered here first, when it’s ready.

That said, we would be thrilled if you can join us for LudoNarraCon. The Hiveswap development team will be playing Act 1, chatting about the story, Homestuck as an inspiration and channeling their inner 90’s teenager! The Friendsim team will also be taking part in the stream and we will be making a demo of Act 1 available for the duration of the convention.

The indie game label Fellow Traveller is running the convention, and we’re really excited to be taking part alongside so many great developers like Inkle and Weather Factory.

Thanks again for your patience and support. We’re so happy to be back talking about Act 2 and can’t wait to share more info soon.
