(For those with more experience or medical knowledge - am I right in guessing deconditioning is a pretty big deal even in young 20-somethings? I know in elderly people even a couple of weeks in bed can be the beginning of the end, it's wild to see such young people almost keen for that.)

Mainly because enforced prolonged bed rest in healthy subjects (based on the studies NASA was doing) steals their spoons. Chronic fatigue, orthostatic syncope, lack of appetite, joint pain...the exact symptoms spoonies complain about. Probably not a good idea for spoonies to play sick little bedbound princess if they're trying to actually get better.
