Weeb Wars / AnimeGate / #KickVic / #IStandWithVic / #vickicksback - General Discussion Thread

A lot of people are turning around and selling these on ebay or some shit, or would be if they were free. Also the studios probably want them charging for these because it means they can pay them less and expect them to make their own money at the cons.
The studios couldn't give a single shit what contractors do at a convention. It was a slow feature creep. Basically people started charging fees to appear at the conventions either to dissuade too many cons from inviting them, or simply as a test to see if they could get some money and then they learned from comic cons that they could charge individual fans, so they made a deal with cons that they'll charge the fans directly instead of a flat fee to the con and the greedy con runners said "hey, less money from my pocket", and bam, new revenue stream for F-list "celebrities".

The biggest anime conventions (Anime Expo & Otakon) for sure used to be vehemently against paying people to come to cons and also against nickel and diming the fans. And then they became larger corporations.

Considering how insular and incestuous this animu-licensing industry is, I'm surprised we haven't had an incident like this years ago. These ""entertainment"" people always seem to have the same politics/ideologies don't they?

Not the right time. FUNimation still had a Christian CEO back then and political loonies didn't have GamerGate and the 2016 elections as things fueling the far-left ideology

I mean we had a (former) con staffer here. @Captain Manning gave us some good info, but also pics of con-staff group messages. I'll look for his posts.

EDIT: Ah, found it
To add some context to the Captain Manning post, the person who said he hadn't had a problem with Vic was Jim Vowles, a longtime staffer with Otakon who dealt with a lot of guests and industry. The person asking the question was Jessica Hodges, an exceptional individual who tried to start a convention (and failed):

And apparently was the (probably self-proclaimed) leader of a J Michael Tatum fanclub and a Chris Ayers fanclub:
(I especially like how this thread is titled "Bring Tatum Back to Texas" and someone posted that he LIVES IN TEXAS)

(Trying to promote a Chris Ayers fanclub)

So here are (allegedly) cons that have banned Vic.

This is a stupid argument to begin with, because con-runners are as much drama whores as anyone else, moreso because of the business they're in. They may be able to function (so long as they're successful conrunners), but it's still people who are hyper-nerds or deeply involved in the cosplay scene or studio side of things. You may note that Rooster Teeth and Funimation, despite being decent sized companies with some success, are still staffed and run by morons.

Although overwhelming evidence indicates that Vic isn't considered a problem guest (at least not more problem than anyone else they invite) and is actually favored, even if there was the odd con who banned Vic for being 'mean', demanding too much in his contract, or because some staffer told horror stories they heard about from their cousin's friend (or someone committed TI but didn't get caught), that isn't a sign of guilt. It just ignores all the cons that have banned all the other guests out there by putting a magnifying glass on Vic's con schedule and trying to isolate it from 'how many other people only go to cons once or twice or have big gaps between visits'.

And it usually relies on 'he didn't show up at x con for y years' as their 'evidence', ignoring the fact that it may not be the con banning Vic, but Vic banning the con because they failed to live up to their contract, were too difficult/cheap to deal with, or were rude to him.

Went to tekko again in '10 and '18

Never went to an Acen in 05 or ever apparently

On and off at ohoyocan seems to mean he was never banned

Can't find an Anime Detour anywhere there

So that leaves Anime expo 14, Otokon 17 and Anime boston 05. Considering he hardly goes to the same cons every year it will be hard to say 14 and 17 are even suspicious.

Hey maybe he was banned from Boston 05, or maybe he decided not to go back because they fucked something up that one time, or maybe it's something unrelated that has nothin to do with anything.

Evidence seems to be that Vic hasn't been back since ergo must be banned.

It's worth noting that I've heard some rumors that Vic's absence from AX may have to do with older under the table interference, like Sabat or a company flexing on AX in private to get him uninvited in future events.

Yeah, I remember seeing this back when it was first posted. Props to @Captain Manning for being able to provide the goods.

What the big issue is are the dozen/s or so of "Literally Who?" people seeping in from seemingly every nook, cranny and crack of the internet to simply say "Hey, I was Con Staff. Vic sucks, yeah?" and then fucking off back to where they came from right afterwards. Pretty much anyone can say they were a Con Staff and nobody would question them unlike the harassment claims.

I came to the conclusion long ago that like almost any attendee at a con, the staff are likely just the same where most of them are autistic shut-ins who fail at recognizing and responding to simple human interaction. They're the type that spend all day locked in their room addicted to their shitty DeviantArt and FanFiction accounts.

You'll have to be more specific Nick! Which Lie are you talking about? We have quite a few. Casey also fails at 4th grade math, although I am not sure that counts as a lie? "Stupidity does not always equal Perjury while perjury always equals stupidity' is how I remember it.

In my experience, cons aren't overly strict about who gets to be staff. If you're not a known troublemaker or a criminal and you're willing to work for free you can probably get on staff for most of the smaller conventions who pay in 'free tickets and food'.

It's interesting that the people in the email list don't just deny Vic being a problem, they paint a picture of some kind of excitable puppy. He needs a constant guard not because he's a problem, but because his fans will just assault him and walk all over him (sometimes literally) and he's too nice to do anything about it himself, he won't eat if he's not reminded to do so, and he has to be rescued from his own long lines. The worst I saw there was 'he has trouble accepting "no" sometimes' and 'make very sure you understand what you're offering him and then deliver on it to the letter'. The first just fits the excited puppy thing, and the latter is the closest I've seen to actual 'diva' behavior from reliable accounts. Then again, it's also just understanding his value and not tolerating people promising things they don't live up to. Interesting that his appearance fees at that time were fairly minute.

You'll have to find out in the next episode of Dragon Ball Z!

Which happens to be Thursday in the usual Law Channel and Law Time.
