Pipe tobacco smells pretty nice, honestly. Makes you wonder what the fuck is wrong with the crap they put into cigarettes.

I think part of it is the paper burning, but pipe tobaccos are generally sprayed with a chemical called a 'casing' that makes them smell better and drives up the cost of the leaf itself. This flavor chemical is applied to the entire tobacco leaf after it is harvested and the pipe tobacco yer homie buys is made from shreds of the center of those big dried leaves.
Cig tobacco is a lower tier obv, but it smells worse because it has no 'casing' on it (and is thus a cheaper product to bring to market).
