Natalie Wynn (aka ContraPoints) - the 'Oscar Wilde of YouTube' | RNZ
archived 15 Jun 2019 22:02:49 UTCarchive.li
It retreads a lot of ground from the Ezra Klein interview. But nevertheless:
- What he does is "kind of a comedy and theater in the service of political discussions", dramatizes political struggles
- Politics on YouTube is not so much about the economy and tax reform, it's more likely to be about political correctness, "matters of etiquette, what the United States in going to look like in 30 years". Traditional media has gatekept opinions that are expressed on YouTube (ex. far-right content).
- When Freddie Gray was killed the YouTube comments were viciously racist, people told Nyk that it was just trolling but he didn't get that impression. His view of this was "confirmed in 2016 when we saw the YouTube comments section president get elected".
- The far-right "developed an elaborate set of techniques that helped them 1) evade censorship, and 2) be persuasive to people who ordinarily might not get sucked into such an extremist movement." Involves using memes and irony like the OK symbol, a "kind of wink at each other", and a way to mock progressive activists who had a problem with it. Would use Nazi imagery, modified Nazi flags. "It actually worked for a while and that was scary to me."
- "People would just tell me, 'well this is just nonsense on the internet'". Extremist movements "benefited from that perception that it wasn't serious." Part of what made it dangerous, is that it took so long to recognize that there was "extremist organizing" online.
- "Irony plays a big part in the basic language of the internet," it's the "cultural sense of humor, almost". The far-right was using "double-irony", or "pseudo-irony", they were saying what they really thought while allowing for plausible deniability.
- Nyk "started making this content not because of YouTube comments necessarily, but because of YouTube videos." YouTube was suggesting videos to him "about how Feminism is cancer, Black Lives Matter is racist, how socially progressive campus activists are trying to destroy free speech, these were some of the common talking points".
- Why were these videos suggested to him? One idea he has is that "when I was much younger, presumably with the same email login, I had been watching a lot of content that was popular at the time, like 2009, that long ago, about atheism, which was a popular debate topic of the time. There would be all these atheist YouTubers who followed Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens and Sam Harris, people like that, and they would have debates with religious people. And so I followed those people once, and a few of those people, a few big ones, once the atheism vs. religion conversation died down at the beginning of the 2010's, turned out to be pretty reactionary in every other respect. They would talk about anti-Feminism and so I would get suggested those videos."
- Nyk has done "events on college campuses, and kids who are that age now, YouTube is often one of their primary sources of information about things ... even younger kids, like I know boys especially like to watch these video game channels, some of those have politics hidden in them, and it's really kind of become the way a generation learns about the world in some ways".
- "Random college student, average college student is very much my target audience, and a lot of my audience is actually a little older than that." He doesn't want to make videos that are just preaching to the choir, he wants to reach the same audience that right-wing creators are trying to reach, "people who might not know that much about these issues to begin with".
- At first he did some response videos to right-wing videos, which were overwhelmingly downvoted and had "endless nasty comments". He adjusted his approach to better accommodate an audience that would be initially hostile, defy their expectations within the first 60 seconds of what he's going to be.
- "I liked having imaginary dialogues with the person I was arguing with ... I found out I could make different fictional characters, I would play both of them, and then I could represent two sides of an issue, at first I was using that when I myself wasn't quite made-up. There was this whole debate in 2017 about 'is it ethical to punch a Nazi?', and my feelings about that were mixed." The video about Tiffany Tumbles (Blaire White) had the "Rubin Report" expy that was meant to show the format of the show privileges certain positions over others, "or the way that good rhetoric can trump good reasons".
- It "scared" Nyk how "very low-level emotional appeals would just grab ahold of people ... a very powerful part of right-wing talking points in particular is that they were able to create a narrative out of these psychologically fundamental kinds of anxieties". It was telling how the biggest alt-right insult was "cuck". "I don't know why they chose something that seems to reveal so deep a level of psychological, sexual fixation."
- His approach is "more psychological than philosophical". As in, what anxieties and fears do people have that makes them believe what they do?
- "I think that people on the Left are extremely hard on each other, that there's a lot of infighting ... their politics needs to center around their own personal grievances, all of this is very frustrating and makes it quite difficult to organize and to work in Leftist spaces."
- "I have a long history of being torn to shreds on Twitter, sometimes over genuine mistakes and sometimes over absolutely insignificant nonsense ... it's been a constant source of sadness and difficulty for me that so many people who have leftist politics are just spending all their time trying to tear down other people on social media." Therefore, he has decided to stop caring what people say about him on Twitter.
- The internet is an "unreality, almost" that's like writing in your diary, where you say things that you would never say to a person's face. "It's easy to avoid confronting the people you're talking about as real people, and that gets only worse when people start thinking of you as a celebrity or as a famous person, or as an influencer. Then, people don't really have a sense of you as a human being, who will actually read what they say, much less care about it."
- Nyk transitioned as he was making videos, and as the interviewer states "became an emblematic trans person". He didn't initially know that much about the community, and who he could trust and who he couldn't, and has made mistakes because of that and was "very harshly criticized". When you are a high-profile person in a community that doesn't have very many high-profile individuals, there is pressure to be the "mascot" of that community. "It's not an easy position to be in, it's extremely difficult".
- "It's pretty awful" having the entire process of your transition online. "In a way, I deal with it by just not even thinking about it. I do not watch my own videos, ever." Transitioning is like a second adolescence with many awkward phases, and "I'm too insecure still, I can't deal with it." In maybe 5-10 years he'll be able to look back on it and be proud of how far he's come, instead of being ashamed or embarrassed. "I deal with it by not dealing with it."
- The "drag queen" aspect of the videos allows him to find what's playful in an otherwise awkward and embarrassing transition, being able to experiment with different presentations and styles.
- There are parts of New Media that are not seen as equally legitimate as Old Media yet. When it comes to the far-right, "no one wants to be on 4chan really, except 17 year-old boys, it's a very very unpleasant experience. And so there's a difficulty in even looking at it, much less taking it seriously as a place where political opinions are shared. But, 4chan and 8chan, they were sort of crucibles for the development of, basically a hate movement. And so we're sort of stuck having to take this somewhat seriously."
- People are putting pressure on YouTube for allowing the propagation of extremism on their platform, but it's going to be difficult to effectively police hate speech via algorithm. "A lot of times the extremists are pretty savvy about avoiding censorship, in that they form dogwhistles ... Plus, the extremists themselves can use the reporting system on YouTube to get their opponents censored."
- "I mean, obviously human beings at YouTube could do things like demonetizing channels, the latest controversy going on about this is Steven Crowder, who's been homophobic... bullying another journalist for years now, Steven Crowder should be against YouTube's Terms of Service by the letter, but Steven Crowder's still here, still making money, so..."
- "It's difficult to say exactly, because on the one hand when a lot of platforms banned Alex Jones of Infowars, I think that his being banned really improved these platforms, and really helped prevent damage that he was doing. But on the other hand, like, how much do I trust Google and Facebook to decide what content should stay and what content should go? Unfortunately I don't have that much trust."
- When it comes to Freedom of Speech, the US Constitution does legally allow you be as racist and misogynist as you want, but platforms like YouTube don't have to abide by the Constitution. "It's not at all easy to say where to draw the line."
- It's Nyk's dream to be an entertainer, so the desire to make his content is "in a sense a theatrical element", but there's also "a strong conscience when it comes to this kind of thing", so it's a hybrid of those two desires.
- People get frustrated with the lived experience trump card, but "the fact of the matter" is that most people don't understand what being a trans person is really like.
- "I work so hard on this stuff that my friends and family are often-- they call it the 'video cave', because they just lose me to it, I spend 3 weeks a month basically doing mostly this. And it's not like working hard at a corporate law firm or something where I have to, and I make money. No, it's not that, I just genuinely feel a drive to work at somewhat of a manic pace, and it's in part because I feel like I'm in this unusual situation of suddenly being handed-- or, not being handed, but having grown for a few years, this big platform that is capable of dealing with important topics at a time when it seems to really matter. So, I do have this sense of, 'I have to make the absolute most of this opportunity", and it increasingly looks like this is kind of what my life has done, this is my work, and I care about it deeply. So, yeah, I do feel that sense of urgency."
- He's noticed the power that's come with having a larger platform, as before he was just contributing to a larger conversation but he's now going to dominate these niche issues for at least several months, for example with "Are Traps Gay". It was more fun and more free early on, but now there's a sense of "if I mess up, that's bad".
- He doesn't have the temperament of a professor, and research was not for him, so his Philosophy PhD wouldn't have worked out. "So many afternoons just dying of boredom, sitting there working on some paper." No one's grading him on his YouTube videos, so he can say, for example, in his Jordan Peterson video that "I'm going to divide modernism into two parts because I feel like it".
- His philosophy education gave him "intellectual empathy", in other words being capable of arguing for and against multiple sides that you don't necessarily agree with. If you can put yourself into the mind of Aristotle who lived 2,000 years ago, you can put yourself into the mind of an internet edgelord.
- His audience at the beginning was something like "80% men, 20% women", and "it's now pretty close to 50/50", based on my YouTube analytics anyway". At first, he was "preaching to the choir of a different religion", but now he's in the position where "people will go wherever I point", and that's a different kind of responsibility.

I can't stand people supporting this schmuck while claiming to be anti-capitalism. Everything he does is rooted in consumerism. This asshole just spent thousands on COSMETIC SURGERY, god knows how much he spends on expensive clothing, makeup, accessories and sex toys. If this was an actual woman getting nose jobs and shit no one would support this much less think it's somehow subverting the system.
Ohhh a tranny doesn't like his appearance! Who the fuck cares? Millions of people have body dysmorphia and appearance related issues. Millions. Why should a tranny problem's be more special to the point his consumerism is seen as an act of rebellion?
Natalie came at the time when transsexuals had no representatives on Youtube because it was predominantly right-wing.
The video with Jaymes Mansfield just got posted.
Already in the first two seconds of the video Nyk is looking like this:

Also, is it just me or has Nyk gained a little bit of weight? I think I must be imagining it. I think the botched FFS has created a bigger mismatch between his face and body which just throws me. Strong uncanny valley effect. Maybe his arms got flabby on HRT too, and he isn't going to work out because exercise is clearly not an activity befitting a Dainty Laydee like him. People with big man arms can't afford to gain weight on them unless it's muscle, it just looks stupid and out of proportion. (Especially when you've had your skull chiselled up, have metre wide shoulders and are wearing a pound of drag makeup.)
I still can't decide if that guy is grifting or just extremely dumb. I have a bad feeling that he might just be a dim-witted and gullible man who's gotten an absolutely unwarranted level of attention. I'm holding out hope that he's some kind of plant because I get so much secondhand embarrassment from the idea that he's legit.Other updates, Faraday Speaks responds to the NYT blowfile of himself and Nyk:
He says that plopping his manbits menacingly on the table in the very first paragraph of the article was just about "the comfort of security", not about the far left being total hypocrites when it comes to gun rights (guns for me but not for thee).
He repeats the lie that Youtube's algo favours far right content. I demand that Faraday Speaks responds to this study that Tim Pool has referenced repeatedly in his videos, debunking the idea of an algo-driven far right pipeline on Youtube.
He complains about Youtube dividing and isolating people. What does he do? He joins the most cultic part of Youtube with the most aggressive content cops playing a game of divide and conquer.
He then attacks conservatives for using the money they made on Youtube to build off-site alternatives. Well, duh, where are people gonna go when you censor them on all the mainstream social media platforms? They are going to flock into their own online ghettos where they continue to stew in their resentment and anger. Good job, culture warriors.
He says that Youtube needs to be consistent in how they apply their rules, which is bullshit because everyone knows Youtube has favourites whom they allow to get off the hook with shit that they will ban others instantly for. Let me give you an example. Prince of Queens got demonetized after he made a video about Nyk, when he was already shadow banned before for making MRA style videos about feminism causing every evil on the planet. What about all the Drama channels on Youtube? Some of these Drama channels have videos that would put the most aggressive GamerGaters to shame (look at the way Boy In A Band and Content Cop went after LA fuckboi rapper Ricegum for an example of this). Why doesn't Youtube demonetize them as well, if this demonitization drive is about discouraging online haters. Because... Drama channels are too big to fail? I don't think Faraday Speaks has spent enough time on Youtube to notice or appreciate this almost feudal dynamic between Youtube and their chosen favourites, with Youtube consistently having the backs of their favourites much in the way a feudal overlord would protect all the peasants under his control. (I am sure you guys can come up with other examples of this at work.)
He claims that Peter Coffin (with whom Faraday has collabed) has not collabed with, quote, "dangerous figures". He should go and read the Laurelai thread here on Kiwi Farms. That's a person Coffin has collabed with and still supports.
Then he proceeds to contradict himself by admitting that he's well aware of the fact that censoring conservatives on the big social media sites only drives them into far right online ghettos... but he still supports the censorship that causes that to happen. Because he doesn't think in terms of cause and effect, he doesn't see how the one is an effect of the other. Faraday Speaks, you need to realize that you can have your leftwing views without joining online cults and engaging in these very public and rather pathetic acts of self-flaggelation and repentance in the NYT. If you were, as you claim, an innocent victim of the irresistable algo, why would you need to self-castigate and repent in public? Everything that happened to you was beyond your control, the algo did it to you. See what you did there?
the more i stare at this the more i can't decide what emotion this conveys.
Absolutely not true, there was trans-representation aplenty on Youtube long before Nyk decided to troon out. Youtube was already swarming with SJW troons when those early troons were going after Mancheeze and Terri Strange for being radical feminists in Youtube Atheism. Zinnia Jones started out as a male Youtube Atheist and transitioned on Youtube. Prince of Queens has done videos and Livestreams about how Kat Blaque was the SJW troon of choice on Youtube before Nyk came along and dethroned Kat as Youtube's pet trannie - though Kat was already in the process of being dethroned for calling RuPaul "a white man in blackface". Then there's the large mainstream trans channels with product endorsements like Gigi Gorgeous and Nikita Dragun that long predate Nyk.
I still can't decide if that guy is grifting or just extremely dumb. I have a bad feeling that he might just be a dim-witted and gullible man who's gotten an absolutely unwarranted level of attention. I'm holding out hope that he's some kind of plant because I get so much secondhand embarrassment from the idea that he's legit.
I think we cross a line into bitchy girl gossip when we start talking about Nyk's cellulite or how flabby his arms might be. Who cares how hideous this guy is. Who seriously gives a fuck.
The *real* concern is the message being presented to his younger and impressionable fanbase: that in order to successfully and fully transition, one needs not only body-destroying hormones, but also expensive cosmetic surgery. It's an argument for gender being entirely performative and aesthetic, as well as increasing the sense of body dysmorphia that plenty of these trans-folks are experiencing.

Making fun of idiots is fun. There's nothing more to it (and I really am curious if the HRT made him gain weight - this is a thread about Nyk, after all, speculating on his personal health is entertaining).
