It wasn't so much about proof vs. speculation, not at first, as it was their blatant hypocrisy. When Sony started censoring and Valve started purging, ERA would wave it off with a simple "GOOD, they're all disgusting loli child abuse games anyway." In the majority of these cases that was a lie; the ERA hivemind hates anything that gives straight men the slightest semi, so they resorted to this made up, lazy deflection every time. If you argued in any way against this narrative, they banned you.
Then comes this bombshell where the higher-ups are waxing poetic and philosophizing about the same shit they permaban their users over. Hard proof of pedophilia? No, but it made them look like assholes all the same. Then they were damage controlling and protecting their own, and it went from an issue of hypocrisy to very suspicious behavior. And now in this latest case we have a straight up predator.

It's not really the ideology that is to blame here.
Both the Nazis and Communists historically had megapedos in their ranks, so being a sex deviant is not really something that is ideologically driven.
The thing that does provide the impetus to let this deviance fester is the allowance of double standards.
ResetERA is pretty balls deep in the idea of "rules for thee, but not for me" when it suits them, and One Angry Gamer (William Usher's ideologically opposed blog) is just the same when you get right down to it, and the right has just as many sex pests too (like the porn star who was pro-GG who turned out to be a pedophile), they just manifest their deviance in different ways, but the common factor in both sides having such deviants is allowing them a double standard to shield themselves with to justify such things, and that's really an internal flaw with not being held to their own rules as opposed to an inherent flaw in whatever political compass they have.

SJWs in particular are pathologically incapable of ever admitting fault, and that includes facing up to having missed a predator in their midst. That's why it happens over and over and over again and why they will still, to this day, defend a blatant pedophile like Nicholas Nyberg.
I doubt REEEE Era even has any more pedos than anywhere else similar, except maybe at the mod/admin level. It's just what they do when something happens that is deplorable, not that they ever had an issue. When even 8chan, a pit of iniquity, had an issue with it they simply deleted the worst of the offending boards and, much like 4chan, still have the usual loli issues that you see there and on REEEEra.
These REEEEE clowns went on full lockdown and DFE and hid the offenders and let them change their names and maniacally banned everyone who tried to discuss it, making themselves look vastly worse.
I'm surprised a REEEEtard of any sort had the ability to pull off a dox drop like this, in multiple stages for maximum pain. Very well done.

That was Mercedes Carrera (and her husband), it was earlier this year, and she was pretty comprehensively denounced after sexually exploiting a minor with her husband repeatedly. Note, if you will, the fucking difference. Nyberg, who was on the exact opposite side, continues to this day to have people claim she was framed and misquoted because she pushed the party line.
While I don't doubt you could find some mouth-breathing dipshit someplace who was trying to defend her, there was nothing resembling the cover-up there was on GAF and subsequently ERA regarding this kind of shit. In fact, in the past, whenever other communities that are not Social Justice communities dig this shit up, the result, as I said earlier, tends to be outright hostility towards the exposed pedophile.
Getting this situation requires specific traits, and while it's not limited to left or right, the traits do make it more common in Social Justice communities (who are extreme-left) in the current incarnation. The general setup requires strong central leadership, hostility to outside ideas, a close tie to said central leadership, and a strong push towards orthodoxy in their belief structures resulting in virtue being dictated by how hard the party line is pushed.
