Man, you or someone needs to make this into a video format.
It would probably be way less likely to inspire 'tl;dr' from random passersby were it in video format.
The heebie-jeebies of real-person shipping aside, I think it's hilarious that no one thought of Vic/Monica because I remember in Ghost Stories, they made a couple of aside jabs at Vic/Hilary Haag. I'm actually kinda shocked Haag hasn't spoken up about this, you'd think her politics would align with Monica's in that she'd be super supportive of her.
Real person shipping is weird, but it is a constant in fandom, and exactly what Monica is playing off of when she's saying she can't make a fuss and all that. I'm not saying
no one shipped those two, I'm just saying that when I read through every single page on Google using the term 'Vic Mignogna' (or 'vic' or 'mignogna') from 2000 to 2014 (and then part of 2015) I didn't see anything of the sort. Which is during the timeframe Monica claims this was happening.
Also, Vic and Caitlin are in fact long term, very close friends. She has led some of his worship services with him.
A quote from an interview with him (the tangle one):
Together with
Caitlin Glass (Vic: “Ah, my darling!”), Vic has often led worship services on Sunday mornings at conventions he’s attended. It started when they both attended
Youmacon in Detroit many years ago and Caitlin suggested that the two, who were each involved in worship that their own churches, have a worship time. Vic played the piano and the two sang. The silent hotel soon became a hustle and bustle as a crowd gathered. And thus was born a tradition:
"So I sat down at the piano and quietly played and she and I sang songs together and closed our eyes and spent a little time worshipping. Opened my eyes and there were kids all around the piano – like 50 kids at least, jammed in. So I go, “Oh, wow,” where did they come from, right? And I just happened to have my New Testament in my back pocket and I started sharing and the following weeks after that convention, Caitlin and I got so many positive emails and encouraging letters from the people who were there. And I thought, “Maybe this is what I’m supposed to be doing.” Maybe God put me where he put me not to make much of Vic Mignogna, but to make much of Him and to share his love with these kids, a lot of whom have been very disenchanted and disenfranchised from Christianity by people in their lives who have told them that God hates anime and God hates that they wear black and God hates that they pierce their noses and God hates that they have purple hair and blah blah blah blah blah, all of which God doesn’t give a flying flip about. God loves them and who they are on the inside and that is the message that I want to share with these kids more than anything."
(Yes, Vic started doing Christian panels because CAITLIN suggested it, and the people loved it)
Is it because his mere being Christians reminded them that their parents wouldn't approve of the (oftentimes sexual) debauchery many of them were invariably involved in at these cons?
Also, your entire writeup is very curious. Nice 'search.
I've been making the conjecture a couple months back about Monica having sour grapes stemming from them being a thing at some point, but the fact that there's no discernible shipping between them by fans is notable. If they were a thing, it'd be impossible for nobody to notice-- it shouldn't have even been a matter of noticing, but rather a matter of noticing that they've been in the same room together sometimes. She's outright made a show of hugging him at one convention, she's had playful banter with others in public that's invoked his name.
This is really curious, because it suggests Vic had beyond nothing to do with her, even though they were friends. It's almost paradoxical if I take you at face value.
BUT. I think the reason why Vic and Caitlin were shipped together at a point was because she did the VA work for Winry Rockbell, who had canon ship tease with Ed, who Vic voiced. That sounds like it would be the reason.
In contrast, IIRC, Rial voiced Dante, who had been body-hopping for centuries to avoid death and at best made a very solid-yet-brief pass at Ed because he was the son of her previous lover and fellow body-hopper who abandoned her after he fell in love with Ed's mom/realized that he couldn't keep the body-hopping up forever because every body they hopped to decayed faster than the last.
According to Vic, he believes it's because he stands up for his beliefs and won't bow.
"…if you look at any videos, look at any documentation of me interacting with fans and you will not find one example of me being cruel or mean or short or in any way being rude or dismissive ever, ever, ever, ever, EVER, EVER, EVER. In the 250 conventions and the tens of thousands of kids I’ve met, I have never mistreated or been rude or cruel or condescending ever. So why do they hate me? Why do these people hate me? There’s only one conceivable reason. Cause I take a stand for my faith. Because I share my faith. And somehow that makes me a big target for ridicule and people make up horrible lies about me. Horrible lies! Things that are so disgusting, and I think, who has time in their day, in their life, to sit around and make up hurtful stories about somebody who has never done anything to them or anyone else and then take the time to post it, and cause all kinds of horrible rumors and stuff?"
Also this, just to remind you how awful these people spreading rumors are “I try not to allow it to get me upset, but it can be discouraging when you try so hard to be kind to every single person you meet and yet there are kids out there who are just dead set on being hateful and causing you trouble. It’s really disappointing.”
Anyway, according to Vic's own words, it seems that he actually
did make out with her once and made a pass at her, but that she said they shouldn't, and when he next saw her, said she was seeing someone. So it may be that they flirted with the idea for a bit, Monica got cold feet and shut it down, but then later regretted it after Vic had already moved on.
