While we all enjoy the Christine's putdown I can't just pass over this statement "in the 80s when software dev was simpler". Simpler how, you fucking tard? Just because the software didn't look as fancy it wasn't easier to write. You just need to compare tooling you get now. You couldn't just spin another server to lessen bottlenecks, you'd need to write some assembly. Storage? Pain in the ass. Documentation? Printouts. Debugging? Wired. Spread of consumer computing? Huge, 8 bits, 16 bits, consoles, mainframes, text-only, graphics-only. No way to just set a cross compiler and build against some POSIX variation. Can't just shit out some website-embedded-in-browser with Electron and call it a day.
High level programming wasn't easy then and it's not easy now. But at least now you suffer in comfort of modern computing.
