Imagine being a semi-important "celebrity" going to a convention because your own profession doesn't pay you enough. Then this manjaw comes stomping up to you via a fucking social media application. They drop some heavy shit on you - and you'd been going to cons for years and probably heard nothing, and experienced less - but they straight up drop bombs on you and suggest you show your solidarity by not getting a payday from the convention - meaning you have to wait longer for another payday - so you say "thank you" and move on, fully intent on going to make money.

But that's when it gets heated. Said fan turns into a psycho who tweets not @ you, but around you, name dropping you, squealing and flinging their feces because you didn't pull out publically. You cower, and just wish they would go away... But now they are saying you endorse rape and sexual harassment and won't bend to her will - saying you don't care about the safety of con-goers and other guests... It is a literal nightmare and maybe you rethink voicing cartoons from another country.

To me, the question then becomes how do you stop these people from actively defaming Vic at every chance they get, harassing conventions that might hire him with their bullshit (as both Armzgurl and ljmontello have done) and using what influence they have, however limited, to try and make it bad PR for Vic to be employed?

They're unimportant in the grand scheme of things and worth very little, sure. But the internet means that it realistically only takes a handful of loud, hate-filled harridans with too much time on their hands to really fuck up someone's life like this. Without being forced to do so, we have no reason to believe they will stop their behaviour, not for years. Their less-committed friends might fall away, but those two as well as people like the penguin and Dominique Skye are likely to harass Vic to the ends of the earth unless they are forcibly given a reason to stop.

We can hope that cons, employers, people in general just start ignoring them. But until then, how can they be shut down, if they're not legally forced to do so?

I think looking at how Dear Leader played the Yaniv saga is could give some clues as to how one engages in counter pr. It's very interesting what a convenient dossier of available and relevant facts in a central well SEOed location can do. Especially for people who care about their internet footprint, and the people who are too small to sue but loud enough that you potentially ignore them at your own peril definitely care about their internet footprint.

It's still early days though, Manjawlo is bellowing because she thinks she is riding a wave of momentum supporting her. It defendants start dropping to settlement (with apologies) or losses at trial I suspect that tune will change and so will the tune of a lot of con organizers.

Hell, I'd be very curious to see how the landscape changes merely if Funi loses at TCPA. I bet a lot of people start perking up their ears, because that indicates there's actually a sledgehammer waiting to be dropped on anyone stupid enough to keep hanging out under it, which law twitter (to their credit, kind of) has done a fairly good job obfuscating to uninformed or weak people, but all that ends if they start failing when their theories are tested.
