Not only that, Greg Ayers is a notorious liar in the anime industry. He's on record stating the reason the anime Ghost Stories has a gag dub is because it was a huge flop in Japan and the Japanese licencors begged ADV to do whatever they could to make it sell in America.
Except that's not true. At all. Ghost Stories got some of the highest TV ratings in Japan, beating out giants like One Piece, Great Teacher Onizuka, and Digimon Adventure at the time. It was re-released on home video multiple times, and has had numerous re-airings in Japan over the years (a rarity). Does that sound like a colossal failure to you? Plus, if you know anything about anime production, no Japanese company begs or relies on the American market to save them. Especially not in the early 2000s when simulcasting and streaming wasn't even a thing where you could at least make the argument for it nowadays. Even today, Japan cares more about the Chinese and Korean markets far more than they do the American one.
What actually happened is anyone's guess. Maybe the Japanese side demanded ADV license the show as part of a package deal and sell it in America since it did so well in Japan, and ADV knew it'd be hard to sell a show about Japanese folklore and yokai nobody knew about so they improvised. But what we do know is Greg Ayers is a lying sack of shit who loves to puff himself him and take credit for things he shouldn't.
Oh, and I feel I should mention both Monica Rial and Vic Mignogna both did voices in the dub.
