I think it's a combination of growing resentment and woke politics over time.

I'm trying to parse the root of this apparent evil that these people are still so rabid over. It's just not dawning on me where this righteous indignation is coming from. I have no doubt of that. This sounds pretty accurate but, I don't think anime will ever get to that point because it can't be controlled by Americans and therefore will not be beholden to the shitlords on twitter and their ilk. DBZ and Naruto are well-known but those shows are decades old and have run their course. Even shows that weebs would consider mainstream like Death Note, CBB and so forth aren't really. I can't go to a random person and ask if they know who Light Yagami is, or who Spike Spiegel is. They know Batman, Superman, Iron Man Thanos, etc. And the genre puts out new quality content at a frightening pace when compared to vidya and movies.
