You're probably right. The style of the character designs is so similar, though, that I thought it may have been them.
Similar, but different guys.

On a side note, The Fafner series and Cross Ange share the same charcter designer with the SEED series.

"How can you say Fai isn't gay? I've read the manga!"

"Why are you even asking me-- I have nothing to do with the manga. Heck, I hardly have anything to do with the anime beyond doing the dubbing. Why are you trying to get validation for your ship from some VA?"

Also, your mention of "fansubs made it gayer" caused me to remember something:

Well back in the day, when Lucky Star was still a thing, I recall a fandub of a scene from its OVA (one of them? I wasn't too much of a fan of the show and having to make this recall is a bit painful) making rounds, wherein one of the protagonists, Kagami, says "I wanna fuck with Konata" as she wakes up from a dream (that the viewer-- if viewing the entire OVA-- would have seen), referring to another protagonist who she was often shipped with for... gay reasons. A fansub may or may not have made rounds prior to this which rendered that line as a translation of the spoken Japanese, credibility for this translation coming from a bird tweet that may have been interpreted as a censor instead of an indication of wooziness, her twin sister happening on her by chance and-- I believe-- saying that she would go tell Konata with her (Kagami) flustered at the statement of intention, and the fact that the Japanese has the first syllable coming out of her mouth being "ko", which is immediately proceeded by the aforementioned bird tweet likely taken as a censor.

What she actually said was "koi o shitai", which translates to "I want to fall in love". But good luck trying to convince people back then that that was what she said and that a name wasn't censored.

So she's Filipina.

This kind of mistranslation is unbelievably common in fansubs, and can sometimes persist even in official ones. It's because subtleties in the Japanese language, or biased/poor attempts at localizing something misinterpret the 'gist' of what's being said. Basically any time dialog gets flirtatious, romantic, or sexual, you can bet that someone who shouldn't be translating professionally is going to trip up and translate it as too far one way or the other, And when it's got that sub weeb following without any professional localizing (especially the 'I speak Japanese so I translate everything literally, no I don't understand context' fans) when the correct thing comes out there's a big fuss and furor over how it's been 'censored' or whatever. The only difference here is that Vic said it first, so he gets pinned with the blame when in reality he had nothing to do with it.

Also because fujos.

These are the same exact people who got infuriated when the author of Naruto patterned Naruto and Sasuke's relationship after his and his twin brother's relationship, and then didn't end it with the two having mad sex. The more you learn about fujos, the less you trust or care about their opinion on anything.

I think it must be time to debunk the KuroFai rumor. People keep clinging to it as one of his worst 'but you have to admit it happened' offenses.

It really didn't.

Context: Tsubasa is a girl's manga by the group CLAMP, who you might know for Card Captor Sakura, Chobits, or Angelic Layer and probably nothing else if you don't like girl anime. They're also known for their yaoi proportions and the fact that they like to stick gay relationships into their stories. Vic was cast as Fai in the english dub of Tsubasa because the voice director desperately needed a Fai and Vic didn't mind doing it. Fau has a special connection with another male character named Kurogane. There's lots of gay hints and teasing between them from the start of the manga. Fujos immediately decided the two were super gay and got super angry that Vic voiced Fai.

(Mild amusing tidbit: Sabat plays Kurogane, so Vic is effectively flirting with, teasing, and annoying Sabat all anime)

Claim: Some fujo asked Vic about whether Fau were gay for Kurogane. Vic claimed that he spoke to CLAMP and they said "No, Fai is not gay." Someone else spoke to CLAMP, and they said "Vic who?", an auxiliary claim is that he rewrote Fai dialog to be less gay. I see no proof of Vic having that kind of power over Tsubasa, and Fai doesn't really have gay dialog to change. I assume this is 'fansubs made it gay, dub fixed it' issues.

The simplified version you'll probably hear: VIC LIKES TO LIE AND TELL PEOPLE CLAMP TOLD HIM FAI, WHO'S SUPER GAY, WAS ACTUALLY STRAIGHT. CLAMP SAID THEY DON'T EVEN KNOW WHO HE IS, SO HE CHANGED HIS STORY TO SAY COLLEEN ASKED. LOL.

So. Let's see if I can debunk it fully.

First: The anime itself actually plays up Fai's heterosexuality. Not the dub, the anime. There's filler episodes of Fai going on a date with his female robot Chii, for instance. This is important, because Vic is a silly man who doesn't read the manga of the anime he dubs, he likes to experience it as it gets dubbed. FMA is the only anime he watched ahead for, and he stopped at a certain episode specifically so he would be genuinely moved at the right times while dubbing. Vic's only experience with Fai is via the anime.

1b: Fujos claim that CLAMP disowned the anime because it dared to make Fai straight. There's no proof to be found of this. The only place I found this claim was immediately followed by someone dismissing that claim.

Second: Fai and Kuro never explicitly get together in the manga. They never confess. They never do anything like that. They make mutual sacrifices of body parts for each other and for a bit Fai has to feed on Kuro as a vampire. The closest they get to an expression of feelings is that Fai gets depressed and cold for a bit because he decides he "crossed a line with Kuro". However, it's entirely possible to interpret them as having a platonic relationship even if you read the manga. Fujos, of course, instantly determined they were gay from the first graphic novel because Fai teases Kuro. Claims that they decided the two were gay for each other because of 'later developments' is a lie. Even during the beginning while Kuro is obviously in love with a woman they acted like the pairing was certain.

Third: There's a scene where Fai apparently speaks nonsense French for the entirety of the scene, and so the dub was given "French Gobbledegook" for the lines. Vic was forced to go for up to 45mins per line doing retakes just saying nonsense that sounded 'French' because the voice director wasn't happy with anything he said. This is relevant because it vastly undermines the idea that Vic had any control over Fai's lines. He hated this scene, although the voice director finds it a hilarious anecdote, and had he any control over it he'd likely have rewritten it. (He won't do 'French Fai' lines because of this. It's not possible for him to do them.)

3b: He does sometimes get some flexibility over scripts. He rewrote one 'potty mouthed' character because he was able to convince the director that he could make the character work convincingly without it. Notably, most 'potty mouthed' characters in dubs are just doing that to convey that characters are being rude. It's rare for characters to really use profanity in manga. This is likely where the claim comes from here.

On to the evidence.

A confrontational fujo who thinks she has a gotcha asks Vic right at the end of his panel "What do you think about the increasingly obvious homosexual relationship with Kurogane and Fai. I've read ahead in the manga blahb lahl blah"

Vic responds rather smugly that he already spoke with CLAMP about this two years prior at Anime Expo, and was told that Fai isn't gay.

Angry Fujo snarkily responds "You weren't Fai two years ago, you don't read the manga, how would you know to ask this?"

Vic retorts "That's because i didn't ask. Colleen Clickenbeard did."

Fujo slapfights with him a bit, saying that it's 'extremely obvious they're soulmates' and Vic responds with 'yes, but are they screwing each other?', which she takes deep offense to, and he says essentially 'suck it up, buttercup. If you're gay you're having sex with other men, not just loving them'.

I can't find evidence of CLAMP denying knowledge of Vic, but it's worth noting this story is what Vic has stuck to always, so it's irrelevant. His story was never actually that he spoke to them personally. He clarified it was Colleen on his first telling. Later in Tekkoshocon rumors panel he brings it up again and doesn't change it, but people claim he's 'amended it' to say Colleen asked. This is wrong. He says Colleen said it here. You can argue that he's 'covering' for himself here, but that's stupid. He's just simplifying the story to get to the important part.

Now, to debunk the idea that Vic somehow lied and CLAMP called him out about it.

Part one (The post in question is highlighted) - The confusion over CLAMP is that Vic was wrong about who was asked. It was not CLAMP who was asked whether Fai and Kurogane were gay, but the producers of the anime. The producers who made an episode where Fai goes on a date with a woman. It's not unsurprising he'd get this confused, because by his own story when this was asked he didn't even know wtf the anime was. Furthermore, the question was not "Are Fai and Kurogane in love" but quite literally "Are Fai and Kurogane gay?" Which, as you will note even in Vic's response, is exactly what they said 'no' to. Vic is correct. He was told Fai wasn't gay, because Fai isn't gay.

Part two (again highlighted) - In response to the idea that Fai and Kurogane 'are soulmates, and therefore gay', and addressing CLAMP's feelings on the relationship itself. Touya and Yukito in CCS (who are undeniably in a gay relationship and actually confess) are said to not be gay, according to CLAMP, but instead 'soulmates'.

Conclusion: The story that Vic lied about CLAMP telling him that Fai wasn't gay only for CLAMP to slap him down later, proving he's not just a liar but someone willing to lie to deny his actually gay character isn't gay is...actually just a lie.

Sidenote - most non-fujos don't even think Kuro and Fai are sexually or romantically connected to each other. Even when Fai and Kuro later cameo in a different manga, they're still not romantically together. It's fueled 100% on subtexted acknowledged by literally no one in any manga they appear in.

Final note: Angry fujo like to morph his story from "Fai isn't gay" into "Fai is straight". You can see from the original telling for yourself. There's a difference between saying 'not gay' and 'definitely straight'.

God, conventions in this era were so embarrassing for this exact reason. Stupid fujoshi's shipping every male character in sight with another one and asking all sorts of idiotic questions on these panels. It's interesting though because I really think to understand #KickVic and some of the reasons why this happened you need to go way back to this era of conventions. You need to look at who was around then and what sort of friends they had, you need to look at the big pushers of the movement and where they come from. There was push back eventually in the 10's on the fujoshi culture at cons to make it more family friendly which I believe Vic also heavily supports and I think that's why some of them are critical of conventions now. They especially seem to target the ones that became the most family orientated and less hardcore fujoshi. Things like selling Yaoi became less open and often removed entirely, Yaoi paddles were banned by many cons and generally they found less of "their kind" at cons because more normies started getting into anime and comics.

Their beliefs are pro-Japan that it's superior and their ultimate goal is to live there and be a fujoshi, they think they should be openly allowed to talk about their Yaoi fantasies and show off their hardcore Yaoi doujin in public and that if anyone is against that then they are a homophobe even though most of them don't even care about real gay men. They want cons to go back to the days when only hardcore weebs and weirdos attended anime cons and blame people like Vic with solid values based on his Christian beliefs for them being pushed into the underground of going to Japan forever or being on Twitter because even Tumblr doesn't let them practice their disgusting beliefs anymore.

So they got rid of Tublr by putting it into the bargain bin?
TBH, imho, that looks like the beginning of the end, maybe a few more years but I doubt that Tumblr will make it past 2025. Not that anything of value would be lost.

It's already approaching the fate of MySpace as it just gets less and less relevant. The tumblr forum used to be a lot more active, and a lot of the very same lolcows who used to infest it have moved on to Twitter, especially the pedos and furries but including a fair number of more generic SJWs.

It's incredible how much has happened since hanleia tweeted an underage sexual assault story from pull, one that was nothing more than a fujoshi fever dream.

This post by Nyahko is what she linked to. It's pretty damning at first glance.

Her sanity slowly starts to unravel in subsequent posts.

When asked about confronting Vic she says, "I first considered it when Vic married a 16 year old to avoid statutory rape charges (in 2014 he was facing possible statutory rape charges in Texas so he took the girl and her mom to Vegas so the mom could sign off on their marriage so he couldn't be charged)"

The person she is describing is Illich Guardiola and not Vic Mignogna.

Nyahko says she has gaps in her memory around that time due to a traumatic brain injury that occurred months after the incident and has trouble remembering things. She can't recall the name of the convention or the hotel where it happened. She says it would have been about 2006 or 2007 and that it happened over her summer break.

"I know it was in Arizona as I lived in the Phoenix area at the time and we had to drive quite a ways to get to the con (If the con had been in the Phoenix area we would have just driven to and from or taken public transit and not bothered with a hotel) I don't think it was out of state because my mother never would have allowed me to cross state lines."

Vic Mignogna attended exactly 1 convention in Arizona from 2003-2008. That was the Phoenix Cactus Comicon in 2007, which was held at the Mesa Convention Center. As the name implies, Phoenix Cactus Comicon is close to Phoenix. Anyone living there wouldn't need to stay in a hotel. And the date of that convention? January 26-28. The middle of Winter is as far from Summer break as you can get.

She also likes yaoi, because of course she does.

Sure I am gonna believe her...
If she had just stopped at the initial story, maybe things would have been fine and it wouldn't be questioned so hard. But subsiquent posts have shown she isn't reliable. To the point she's confusing someone else entirely with Vic.

why do I hear Not Alike in my head cause they compared Vic to actual Voice acting peadophile that Monica DID date for a time before meeting Ron.

But either way, Cooke propagated this post, setting up the most destructive of the allegations against Vic.

...from someone who confused him for Illich Guardiola and suggested he was in a place at a time he couldn't have been.

Allison, you have to be reading the discovery on this big brain move. You propagated a blatant lie from a mentally unsound person.

With a history of brain trauma.
