He DID go on a sorta-maybe-date with a girl named Szontel (I think that was her name? It was something like that) fairly early on. Maybe that's who he's referring to, though I don't remember him ever doing more than just going on one date with her, or ever referring to her as his girlfriend. Maybe he's applying the label retroactively, I don't know.

I don't see where the confusion is your fault. Nick is being intentionally vague, possibly at the suggestion of his therapist? That poor clinician seems to be trying their damnedest to get him to think about things other than you, but I bet they drink heavily since he got added to their caseload, and all the other shrinks are like, "There, there. You didn't cause this..."

Seriously, it takes major guts to tell someone that you've been sexually assaulted, and I'd think it'd be especially hard if your molester was a family member. And given the upbringing the poor girl's had, I'm amazed she was able to tell anyone.
